Statement By Congressman Boehner On The President’s Speech Tomorrow

Apr 12, 2011

Washington- Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) issued the following statement today in advance of the President’s speech tomorrow:

“The American people understand we can’t continue spending money we don’t have, especially when doing so is making it harder to create jobs and get our economy back on track. Chairman Ryan has put forward a responsible budget that will help spur job creation without raising taxes, stop spending money we don’t have, and lift the crushing burden of debt that threatens our children’s future.

“I’m pleased the President has finally joined the discussion, but the Ryan budget has set the bar. If the President is willing to offer serious proposals that grow our economy, preserve and protect programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, and set us on a path to pay down the national debt, we’re open to hearing them. However, if the President begins the discussion by saying we must increase taxes on the American people – as his budget does - my response will be clear: tax increases are unacceptable and are a nonstarter. We don’t have deficits because Americans are taxed too little, we have deficits because Washington spends too much. And, at a time when the American people face skyrocketing prices at the pump, energy tax hikes are a particularly bad idea.

“The irresponsible budget that the President released in February would impose a job-crushing $1.5 trillion tax hike, add $9.1 trillion to the debt over the next decade, and do nothing to address our autopilot spending. The President needs to demonstrate leadership and show American families and small businesses that he is serious about addressing Washington’s spending problem. I’m hopeful that he will use his speech to provide specific solutions, rather than more empty promises.”

I see the left has new talking points now. Ezra Kline was on Morning Joe saying we don't really have a deficit problem. If we just implement ObamaCare and let the Bush taxs cuts expire raise taxes then problem solved. And the whole panel was discussing how Obama could sell raising taxes on just the "wealthy". That polling data supposedly shows the public is in favor of raising taxes on millionares.

Where's the GOP out there reminding people Obama already released his budget so this is basically a do-over. Which basically means he stuck his finger in the wind to see which way it was blowing. I don't hear anyone in the GOP talking about this.

Boner lost whatever small amount of cred he had over adding up bogus cuts to get to a lame $39B total.

How can we trust or believe a thing Boehner says after he got rolled by Obama and then lied and spun the real nature of his budget agreement. If that’s the best deal he could get (ie. no deal) then maybe we need to get a speaker who can accomplish something.

I'm sorry John. Foisting bogus cuts on us when we supported you in the face of amateur negotiation tactics was one giant step too far. We need someone new.

It’s time to replace Boehner with a real conservative. Hopefully Alan Keyes will be moving to Cincinnati, Ohio and soon!

I really don’t know what people expect him to do. He has a Democrat Senate. The people set up a system of gridlock with their votes. That’s the way it is. He will not...AND IT IS COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY UNREASONABLE TO EXPECT HIM TO...get into position and suddenly be able to make everything better. He can get legislation passed, but unless we give him both houses he won’t get what needs to be passed passed.

GROW UP FREEPERS!

He is doing a good job and got some things passed. Hopefully, he has enough political capital to get some bigger things passed in the future. Keep the pressure on but good grief - please stop cannibalizing our own!!!!

No f-ing way does the GOP leadership support tax increases. If for no other reason than they all want their jobs back in 2012. If they go along with tax increases they will lose the House.

This isn't about Boehner it's about Obama and Reid. They need to go. Give Boehner a GOP Senate and White House and you'll see real progress.

Give Boehner a GOP Senate and White House and you'll see real progress.

Give just about any mediocre negotiator a clean-sweep majority of all branches of govt and they'll do as they are told. SO WHAT!?!

We need a hardball negotiator NOW who can get things accomplish with the house and senate we have NOW.

Them's the cards we've been dealt and Boehner isn't up to the job. He's proven that.

The solution is simple. The Republicans can do it on short notice with Democrats unable to stop them.

Shut it down.

A “shutdown” doesn’t shut it all down, it just halts about half of government function.
That would save about $5B/day.
Which is $1500B in 300 days.
Which eliminates deficit spending in one year flat.

The demorats understand one important thing about
the American voting public, they have been conditioned
to the point that they don’t mind taxes as long as
they are on someone else.

Beoehner should understand that “action speaks louder than words”. Especially after he was hood-winked, by a used car salesman type “messiah”.

Yes. The talking points fax went out yesterday around 5pm eastern time, and now the only thing you hear from the drive-bys is “raise taxes”.

Boehner: “my response will be clear: tax increases are unacceptable and are a nonstarter.”

Translation: “you can be 100% certain I will cave in and go along with tax increases”

Passing Ryan’s budget helps. Bottom line, we can’t get anything done but gridlock because we don’t have the Senate. They passed a budget because they had to. The year is over in September. The media would have used up all of Boehner’s capitol in one fell swoop. We need to stay the course and spend it where it’s most effective.
