Conservatism Blamed for Gay Teen Suicides
Associated Press ^ | April 18, 2011 | Lindsay Tanner

Suicide attempts by gay teens -- and even straight kids -- are more common in politically conservative areas where schools don't have programs supporting gay rights, a study involving nearly 32,000 high school students found.

Those factors raised the odds and were a substantial influence on suicide attempts even when known risk contributors like depression and being bullied were considered, said study author Mark Hatzenbuehler, a Columbia University psychologist and researcher.

His study found a higher rate of suicide attempts even among kids who weren't bullied or depressed when they lived in counties less supportive of gays and with relatively few Democrats. A high proportion of Democrats was a measure used as a proxy for a more liberal environment.

The research focused only on the state of Oregon and created a social index to assess which outside factors might contribute to suicidal tendencies. Other teen health experts called it a powerful, novel way to evaluate a tragic social problem.

"Is it surprising? No. Is it important? Yes," said Dr. Robert Blum of Johns Hopkins' Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Zachary Toomay, a high school senior from Arroyo Grande, Calif., said the study "seems not only plausible, but it's true."

The star swimmer, 18, lives in a conservative, mostly Republican county. He's active in his school's gay-straight alliance, and said he'd never been depressed until last year when classmates "ostracized" him for being vocal about gay rights.

Toomay said signs of community intolerance, including bumper stickers opposing same-sex marriage, also made him feel down

It is time for all people to take the responsible for their own actions.. Do you really think if God brings this person to heaven he will say oh my, another Conservative Casualty..Give me a break..

so when pro-hedonistic sexual experimentation groups are not allowed a free reign to recruit CHILDREN, it is everyone else’s fault?

This is like blaming crack addicts for over dosing because of laws outlawing crack cocain.

Homosexuality Strongly Linked to Depression and Suicide

It's a mental illness no matter how "tolerant" people are. The mentally ill are more prone to suicide.

Some interesting questions come up when discussing this topic. I wonder if a lot of these suicides are brought about by the recognition on the part of gay teenagers that "coming out of the closet" ain't all that it's cracked up to be.

The star swimmer, 18, lives in a conservative, mostly Republican county. He's active in his school's gay-straight alliance, and said he'd never been depressed until last year when classmates "ostracized" him for being vocal about gay rights. Toomay said signs of community intolerance, including bumper stickers opposing same-sex marriage, also made him feel down.

I suspect this kid "feels down" because he's gone to such great lengths to immerse himself in his sexual identity, only to find out that nobody really gives a sh!t. Bumper stickers opposing same-sex marriage get him down? LOL.

Well I guess attending a high school football game would finish him, as he would find a whole school rooting for their team and against his.

How intolerant of them.

“the schools focus...(I AM SO SICK OF THIS CRAP) “

My recent employer, I’ve been laid off, had diversity emails, diversity boards, diversity councils, diversity training, diversity pins and umbrellas; diversity, diversity, diversity. The guy who headed it up for years was a certified communist from Latin America; nice guy, but humorless and consumed with diversity and creating equality. They are a government contractor and the contracts mandate diversity training; which the bought from somebody like Jesse Jackson’s race profiteers to the tune of millions. (It’s actually lawsuit insurance.)

A black employee was explaining why all this diversity stuff was great. I asked, “Is there one mid or top level black in the company?” No. “Then, what’s so great about it? What’s it really for?” (He didn’t know.)

Sin opens the door for Satan to come in a do what he does best - steal, kill and destroy. (John 10:10)

Psychologists do kids a great disservice by ignoring the spiritual side and focusing on the soul. If it is a spiritual issue, victory will be elusive and the devil will run roughshod over the young person.

There was a time when society did not tolerate any sin. Now we have embraced all sorts of deviant behavior from adultery to homosexuality to promiscuity. In the case of homosexuality, now that it is considered fashionable, Satan has an opening to attack the Church with claims of intolerance.

Satan doesn’t need much of an opening to destroy the life of a young person. A low self esteem, gender identity issues, sexuality confusion, any of those will work. I struggled in my high school and college years with a suicidal spirit and low self esteem until I finally recognized that the source wasn’t me. I’m alive now because I found freedom in Christ. Once you recognize the enemy, you can beat him knowing that Jesus already secured the victory on your behalf.

Religion can sometimes be intolerant. Heck, it was the religious leaders that crucified Jesus! Some of my most frustrating teen dramas came at church at the hands of Christians that were disobeying God’s Law of Love. God’s Love is wonderful. His mercy endures forever. When you truly turn your life over to Jesus, nothing is impossible. Humans, even Christians, can fail you. God NEVER will.

The latter part of John 10:10 contrasts Satan’s mission with why Jesus came - to give you life in abundance to the full, until it overflows. God wants everyone to experience this abundance. But if you choose to continue in sin, you remove God’s hedge of protection from your life.

I have a over the top gay step son, last night we discussed his mental health............way into the morning.

Our conclusion, this is not our fault but his choices, we pray for him, we no longer enable him with money..............We love him no matter what, yet we are fearing the outcome.

No program will save him, unless god leads him.

Obese teenagers probably kill themselves more often than their slimmer counter parts. Since liberals are more image obsessed than conservatives, can we blame Machelle Obama for any obese kids suicides?

No one wants to blame the IN YOUR FACE activist!
The reality is that normal people usually ignore the them.
But these IN YOUR FACE types want conflict! They demand that everyone give up their beliefs and give them special treatment; and when they do not get it, some kill themselves. If these IN YOUR FACE activist would go along with a live and let live attitude life would be more pleasant for everyone, and perhaps fewer people would kill themselves.

My thoughts exactly. There were kids 30-40-50 years ago that were getting picked on because they were too fat, too short, big ears, too tall, wore glasses, had braces, I could go on and on. This has probably been going on since the beginning of time. What makes gay kids so much more special than all the other kids being picked on? Perhaps it is the liberal media bringing so much attention to gay teen suicides that are giving gay teens a reason to commit suicide. Perhaps the liberal media is offering up the attention these teens crave but the catch is that they have to be suicidal to get that attention. All other generations put up with the same kind of teasing and bullying. Bringing this kind of attention to it doesn’t seem to be making things better. It seems to be making things worse.

Agitprop study. I see no evidence that income was modeled into this. Poor communities have higher suicide rates than rich ones. And why were predominantly black and hispanic communities ignored?
This is a facile and transparent hit job on non-urban whites. It is second-rate Frankfurt School propaganda with the goal of re-affirming the role of schools as indoctrination centers to cleanse children of conservative values.
