The Party Congress had been held up for two years as they were hoping Obama and co. would come through for them, lift the embargo, open the tourist sluicegates, and extend aid and loan guarantees. Well, Obama didn’t come through and now the Repubs are back in charge in the House. So that last hope evaporated.
Now Raul and the gang are trying to see how little they can loosen things up to get the economy going. They had to do something, as those million canned government workers would represent a deadly tipping point with no economy to absorb them.

Technically, he was before my time. I was only seven or so when he died, but later on in the seventies my Mom recommended his stuff so I ended up buying every Pogo collection I could find. A lot of the political humor went over my head but not the “pig” strips.

We already have one Puerto Rico. We wisely cut Cuba loose in 1902, then again in 1908.
The last thing a free Cuba should want is to be a U.S. vassal. Considering how being a U.S. territory works, they’d be far, far better off on their own.
I guess the last ‘Fidel’ double died.
