A partial history of the Resolute desk from ourwhitehouse.org
The Resolute served in the British Royal Navy for twenty-three years until she was decommissioned. No longer in service, she was sent to the breakers dock for salvage.
Queen Victoria ordered that a desk be made from her best timbers. This was the gift that she sent to the White House. The desk, made from the ship that sealed a lasting friendship between Great Britain and the United States, has been in the White House ever since.
It is considered a national treasure and an icon of the presidency. The desk is still in the Oval Office today. When our next president is elected, look to see if the Resolute desk is used. And if so, what special inspirational items are on it?
I do not think obama's shoes are inspirational items.
We make a distinction between respect for the Office of the President versus respecting the president in order to be perceived as politically correct. How can we respect the president when he does not respect the Office of the President?
Great minds have given us quotes on respect and here are two worth considering:
One of my favorites quotes applies to our country now:Men are respectable only as they respect
Ralph Waldo Emerson
We can really respect a man only if he doesn't always look out for himself
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Mr. von Goethe understood what respect and freedom means. It is time that America stands up and remembers.
He’s muslim, and you what they think about showing the bottom of your shoes to people...
One Democrat president showed respect for the office and the Resolute Desk by getting a BJ from under the desk, the other with his shoes up on the desk. Ah respect must be earned in deed.
I also see that the pres is using a non-OSHA approved chair. It has only 4 legs instead of 5. ;-)
“OK. And Dave, you bring the chips. And Rahm, you bring the chip dip. And none of this ranch dressing stuff. I want the real thing. Clam dip. And you other three can bring the beer. Now, what else is on the schedule today? And they say I can’t make decisions.”
Reagan and W. wouldn't even take off their suit jackets in the Oval Office.
Actually, he’s showing them the “pair of comfortable shoes he was gonna slip on” and walk the picket lines in Wisconsin..
Granted, the source is media matters, but the photo is there.
Respect must indeed be earned. I’ve been telling certain types of liberals that for years and they still aren’t listening.
I truly believe that no photo goes out of the WH without knowledge of what the visual represents. On one hand, he is trying to look hip and cool, but I think that he is well-aware of the history of the desk. I’m sure it was told to him and just as he sent back the bust of CHurchill, this action of putting his shoes on a gift of the British is purposeful. There is another picture of him with his shoes facing the camera. THe caption stated that he was talking to Israel’s Prime Minister. Again...a purposeful and subliminal message to the Middle East
You already said what I was thinking ! Not only showing the bottom of his shoes to people but disrespecting the given desk !
> Hes muslim, and you what they think about showing the bottom of your shoes to people...
I keep telling black people that Obama is not a black man. He has no sense of history or experience as a black man in this nation, otherwise he would treat that desk with respect. And he would have understood the significance of PM Gordan Brown’s gift of a pen set made from the Resolute.
We need a Herman Cain or Allen West to restore honor to the Office and remind the American People of the significance of its treasures.
