It is almost clockwork: As a new presidential election cycle winds around, the early primary state of South Carolina provides a defining issue for Americans and candidates to chew over.
Whether it’s a debate about where the Confederate battle flag should fly — or the “real” meaning of secession — the nation’s most stubborn state can be a tar pit for the incautious politician.
Thus, almost to the day that South Carolina commemorated the 150th anniversary of the first shot of the Civil War, the federal government lobbed a grenade into the Palmetto State, challenging a private industry’s right to conduct business there.
Now wait just a cotton-pickin’ minute.

I do have my facts straight. Boeing has additional capacity in Renton and on the 767 line, too. A job that goes to South Carolina is a job that isn't in Puget Sound.

The correlation between confederate states and right-to-work states is not a coincidence.
The side that suffers a military defeat usually has its industrial base wiped out (or never had one). At the time FDR was creating a new labor legislation regime in the mid 30’s (Wagner, 1935), America’s manufacturing base - and the core its of blue collar labor force - was in the North, so these became forced union states. The GOP congress’ attempts to curb labor legislation somewhat in the mid 40’s (Taft-Hartley, 1947) met the most success in the South where there was little capability - nor need, nor interest - on the part of unions to prevent the creation of right-to-work refuges in the South.
So over the past 65 years America’s manufacturing base has drifted south, that is why everyone from Kia and Honda to BMW and Mercedes are setting up shop and succeeding in the South, while our domestic auto manufacturers continue to choke and puke in the North.
The only way Boeing can avoid going the way of GM is to move from Forced Union states to Right To Work states.
The huge GOP win in 2010 parallels the big win in 1948, as both were/will be about cutting down unions. It absolutely must happen to save the country.

Actually, both the colony of Virginia AND the “original state” of VA were much larger, since they included not only KY and WV, but also the present-day states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Virginia voluntarily gave up the latter five in 1787 when the Northwest Ordinance went into effect. Then in 1792, VA also gave up KY voluntarily.
West Virginia’s formation, however, wasn’t exactly “voluntary” — and even today, some constitutional scholars maintain that WV was admitted to the Union illegally, in violation of the U. S. Constitution’s Article 4, Section 3.
Moreover, as far as I know, the Commonwealth of Virginia still has never given its assent to the formation of West Virginia. So when it comes to the “official Virginia position,” there’s no such thing as the state of West Virginia!
Moreover, just imagine how much better the USA would be today without having suffered from such loathesome U. S. senators as Bobby Byrd, Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin.
On the other hand, without WV’s electoral votes in 2000, GWB would have lost, and Algore would have become POTUS. So on balance, maybe we should be thankful for WV!
