Osama bin Laden was a symbol of the Islamic jihad. After 9/11, surveys by al-Jazeera and other sources indicated that between 10% and 50% of Muslims regarded him as a hero. That is somewhere between 150 million and 750 million people. Symbols are important, and the death of the symbol of Islamic jihad is important. But the jihad will go on.
The fact that bin Laden was killed in a mansion near Islamabad (fitting name) is but one mark of the support he had in the Muslim world. But by the time our forces reached him, ten years after 9/11, the center of the jihad had long passed from the caves of Waziristan to the Middle East — to the Islamic Republic of Iran, to Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza, and to the fount of the Islamic hatred and crusade against the West — the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
Obama will take credit for the death of al-Qaeda’s leader, and he deserves it — for the aggressive war he waged in Pakistan in particular. This was a forward strategy that provoked the wrath of the “liberal” establishment when Nixon tried it in Vietnam, and Reagan in Libya and Bush in Iraq. Unfortunately, this is only the right hand of Obama’s strategy towards the jihad. The left hand is simultaneously stoking the fires of Islamic aggression in its heartland, the Middle East, and our war with this evil is just beginning.
In his speech tonight the President talked as though the war is a war with al-Qaeda, although al-Qaeda has played a very small and diminishing role in the 17,000 plus Islamic terrorist attacks that have been perpetrated since 9/11.

Bin Laden MADE AL Quaeda, just as Hitler made the Nazis. In time, Hitler became a mascot, but without him, the Nazis ended up neutered. Al Zawahiri is the organizational brains, but go figure, he isn’t the same symbolically and I am ecstatic about this! I wonder if this is how many felt when Hitler was found and declared dead! Without Hitler, the Nazis still had smart men, but Hitler is what MADE the Nazis who they were! We know that! Without Bin Laden, Zawahiri will end up having no directions and no authority backing his decision making. Without Bin Laden, Zawahiri has no one listening to him and giving him pointers on strategy.
The reason Al Quaeda was so uniquely excellent is that it required a specialized mindset to create it and make it continue to function in the way that it was. That is how it was so frustrating to understand and also to capture. In some respects, it operated right under our noses, like 9-11, but in other respects it was so shadowy that we could never see anything until the attack happened. Bin Laden had the mindest and Zawahiri the organizational skills. Zawahiri followed ordered and facilitated things, but the genius came from Bin Laden. With no Bin Laden, tehre is no one to listen to his problems and also give the pointers. Once Zawahiri is dead, the whole thing will fracture and become just another racist social club packed with losers.
There will be no one else though who will be such an effective symbol of jihad though. As my lengthier post indicates, with Bin Laden gone, there is no one as effective in carrying the banner and leading the charge. Things will fracture and there will be other organizations, but Osama didn’t even die in the glory of jihad, but by a hail of bullets from the infidels. He likely pissed like an infant and didn’t even have the chance to return fire. I bet the scum cowered and I am SO GLAD that the filth is gone from this earth. There will be no trial, no chance of him to be interviewed to spread his filth, and there will be no chance of him standing at some box and getting worldwide press attention, no chance of threats against the country holding him, etc. He died as he lived, in violence.
