Pakistan: Bin Laden raid sparks resignation calls

Prominent Pakistani lawmakers called for President Asif Ali Zardari and other senior government officials to resign Saturday after the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden and embarrassed the nation.

The demands followed a week in which countless questions swirled about how much the Pakistani government knew about bin Laden's hiding place and why the military was powerless to prevent U.S. commandos from helicoptering into the country to kill the al-Qaida chief.

Pakistani officials have said they were totally in the dark, a hard thing for many Pakistanis to believe since bin Laden was holed up in Abbottabad, an army town only two and a half hours' drive from the capital, Islamabad.

Former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who is now a lawmaker for the ruling Pakistan People's Party, fixed the blame squarely on Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani — likely motivated in part by past conflict with the two men.

"This is a great violation of our sovereignty, but it is for the president and prime minister to resign and no one else," Qureshi told reporters in the central Pakistani city of Lahore.

Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, the main opposition leader in parliament, said the country's powerful army and intelligence chiefs should also step down. They are believed to control the real levers of power in Pakistan.

"All from top to bottom who are responsible should take responsibility, and I believe that after such a big tragedy, they should resign," Khan told reporters in Lahore. "This is a call coming from every street of Pakistan."

We’re hearing a lot of our own spin...

is that to distract us from the reaction?

Actually to be honest I totally believe that no one in the civilian government had any idea about Osama. The military runs that country and the ISI runs the military.

Just a curious thing...you get this slight smell of “Egypt-rising” here...like a government chaos period is about to start (like Libya, Tunisia, Syria, etc). If we see a bunch of guys running around...talking Twitter in Pakistan next week...I’m going to be shaking my head over this scripted event.

You might want to look at the other thread...

Protests in Egypt over Osama too...interesting no doubt indeed.

Obama the peace-maker at work.

The NUCLEAR ARMED military runs that country and the ISI runs the military.

There, fixed! Something to think about if the Pakistani government should slip further toward radicalization. We need to be considering the when and how to undertake the neutralization of some 70 nuclear warheads in the 10 to 15 kiloton class, not to mention the production infrastructure that continues to crank them out. If there is any good news it is that Pakistan appears not to have mastered fusion technology.

North Korea and Iran are currently a mild vexation compared to the boil on the buttocks of the world that Pakistan's nuclear arsenal represents. If the fanatics prevail the whole region could explode into WWIII.

Regards,
GG

Looks like ISI Chief General Ahmed Shuja Pasha will resign next week. He is on his way to WA DC right now to meet with Panetta.

Considering the news coming out after the Friday prayers ...

It is very concerning and I’m sort of thinking 0bama lit a fuse that won’t be very easily extinguished.

Some folks are posting this that or the other thing regarding the Pakistanis. I would caution that in their country they have a frightening command of the people.

0bama did nothing to allay their fears and hate for the United States.

The week long coverage of the Osama Bin Laden death certainly derailed conversation from the Right on many other topics including the economy, federal reserve, and global politics.

Obama will release the photos when he needs another distraction (say after the GOP convention names the VP pick).

One thing that the Death of Osama Bin Laden has shown, the US government, college educrats, and the Left Wing media have sold us a FALSE bill of goods telling us that the arab street muslims “didn’t really support Osama because he wasn’t REALLY a muslim following Islam”.

The so called moderates support violence.

More than curious-—your nose is working just fine. Remember the earthquake in northern Pakiland a couple years ago? We sent a Seabee group with dozers etc. to help them clean up and the Seabees only just recently left. That mess is still like our guys left it. Remember the big central valley flood just a few months ago-—it displaced something like 15% of the Paki population? And the “didn’t see anything” government isn’t getting that huge mess cleaned up. Never mind using our money to actually help us-—most of it goes to padding the defenses on the Indian border to the exclusion of normal civilian needs. They are scared spitless of the Indians. And now they seem to have good reason to be more scared of their own people. Pakiland has been sliding economically for quite some time so it’s more a matter of “when” than “if” the place lights up and goes “Egypt.”———just sayin and been watchin’.

If not for their nukes, would Pakistan even exist right now? I’m sure India would love to erase Pakistan from their list of troubling neighbors.

Not that it would ever happen, especially under the Usurper-in-Chief, but I would love to see our Special Forces secure/destroy/confiscate all of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons and then let nature take its course.

But then, our billions in aid to Pakistan goes to bribe the folks who guard the nukes, so we’re in a can’t-win situation. Pay them their vig ... or else. Hmmm.

Outraged Pakistanis stepped up calls Saturday for top government officials to resign following the daring American helicopter raid that killed Osama bin Laden and embarrassed the nation.

Some of the sharpest language was directed at the army and intelligence chiefs, a rare challenge to arguably the two most powerful men in the country, who are more accustomed to being feared than publicly criticized.

The Pakistani army has said it had no idea bin Laden was hiding for up to six years in Abbottabad, an army town only two and a half hours’ drive from the capital, Islamabad. That claim has met with skepticism from U.S. officials, who have repeatedly criticized Pakistan for failing to crack down on Islamist militants.

But with anti-American sentiment already high in the South Asian nation, many Pakistani citizens were more incensed by the fact that the country’s military was powerless to stop the American raid.

I am curious as far as what is not being said about the information collected from Osama’s million dollar shack. I would like to speculate that there is probably info on who within the Pakastani govt knew of Osama’s house.

I am sure there are people within the govt that is having sleepeless nights.

The problem though as I see it is the protests are pro-bin Laden.

Now how confusing can this be? Pro-bin Laden, concern because the government can’t protect them...

This isn’t going to be your ordinary revolution in Pakistan.

Hold that thought... We are re-targeting all of our nuclear missiles... Time to give “Pok-eees-ton” a great big send off party!

We should annihilate the entire country... completely wipe it off the map.

And THEN say to the rest of the Islamic world: “OK, all you bad-ass jihad Sh*t heads... which one of you flaming Allah douche-bags wants a radioactive ride to your 72 virgins?”

We have plenty more nukes left, and we can bounce the rubble at least a few dozen times.
