SWAT raid fatal drama is revealed in 911 call
Arizona Daily Star ^ | 5/14/2011 | Fernanda Echavarri

The wife of a Tucson man killed in a Pima County SWAT raid May 5 pleaded for five minutes with 911 dispatchers to send an ambulance for her mortally wounded husband, audio records show.

Often through tears and sometimes in broken English, Vanessa Guerena, tells 911 operators that her husband had been shot by a "bunch of people" who opened the door of their southwest-side home and "just shoot him." Meanwhile, dispatchers worked to determine if she was calling from a house where the SWAT team was serving a search warrant, audio released Friday by Drexel Heights Fire Department reveals. It takes about an hour for waiting medics to know what happened, and the man is dead before fire crews are allowed into the home.

Jose Guerena, 26, a former Marine, was sleeping after the graveyard shift at Asarco Mission mine about 9:30 a.m. when his wife woke him saying she heard noises outside and a man was at their window. Guerena told his wife to hide in a closet with their 4-year-old son, his wife has said. He grabbed an AR-15 rifle and moments later was slumped in the kitchen, mortally wounded from a hail of gunfire.

This guy was treated like a hold up mass murderer, or someone that just shot up a grammar school, or an international terrorist.

Pretty amazing stuff happening with development of America's paramilitary civilian police troops...

72 rounds fired at one guy, in a neighborhood setting, over what allegedly? This guy was suspected of having drugs? Is this a joke?

Their going to endanger everyone within a half mile of this neighborhood for something like drugs? You'd think this poor guy was an international mass murdering terrorist.

In a country gone mad...

But those here and across the country who join me today in our just war against drugs may take some renewed confidence in our prospects for success because the President of the United States has placed this struggle at the top of his administration's agenda, at the top of our common national agenda where it needs to be.

I doubt the 2 year old is old enough to be traumatized by this. He probably won’t remember it.

I think they should get rid of SWAT teams or at least put them under tight control. The militarization of law enforcement is something that really concerns me and there are times the cure (SWAT teams) are worse than the disease (criminals). We need to have the police go back to the revolver, shotgun and a 1970’s era walkie-talkie. I have nothing against the police but when we see crap like this, I have to question, have we gone way too far?

Do we have to start banding together in citizen militias’ to protect our families and ourselves against these murderers with badges or is that kind of self defense talk considered over the top?

Heh, they might do a better job at law enforcement than the SWAT teams. Everyone would provide their own firearms, cars and CB radios and then you'd have a core of a citizen's police force.

Drug War Whores have blood on their hands.

It's the truth. Only a citizenry which has submitted to essentially arbitrary contraband law could tolerate, and even endorse such law enforcement practices by officers, judges, and state's attorneys.

It is Tyrannical in its essence, and no amount of rationalization can excuse it.

Maybe one day, law enforcement will refocus its efforts on actual criminals, rather than those declared so by an authoritarian State. And I don't care whether such a state is enabled via an empowered elite, or a democratic majority. It invites and inevitably leads to Tyranny, and anyone who doesn't realize that is willfully blind, IMHO.

I’m reminded of an episode of the 1990’s TV show, “Picket Fences” where the sheriff, Tom Skerritt, was chosen for jury duty and the case was where a drug dealer killed a cop or a couple of cops (it has been a while) with an Uzi. The setup was where the cops in SWAT gear came in an a no-knock raid so the drug dealer claimed self defense as the reason to fire back. Skerritt agreed and he was the lone holdout so it was declared a mistrial. At first I thought Skerritt was wrong but when I think about it and soon after when Janet Reno went into high gear as well as the crap we have now, I think he was right and it could be seen as self defense unless the police announce their presence.

99 percent of cops in this country have earned the general disgust and hatred the public has for them.

I think most cops are good, but I do understand where crap like this make them look bad. I just don't like the militarization of law enforcement and that is a huge problem. There will always be idiots where if you give them a CAR-15 rifle, they think they are Robocop and that is where the problem lies. Then when you add in "The Man's" use of them, then you get shenanigans like this.

It is heart-breaking to read about this. He served his country with two tours in Iraq, and survived. He is at home resting after working in the mines, only to be shot dead, riddled with bullets. His wife and child witnessing his violent death.

Heh, maybe it is safer to move to a place like Fallujah or Beirut.

>GlockThe Vote>99 percent of cops in this country have earned the general disgust and hatred the public has for them.<<

Because they are hiding behind their badges!

>SgtHooper >These guys need to be dealt with severely. But please don’t paint all cops with such a broad brush. Get the bad ones out, and praise the good cops.<<

The good cops don’t do anything about the bad cops so you’ll all get painted with that wide brush. Have you ever stood up in a squadroom meeting and mentioned that the suspect can be apprehended at work by a single officer or at the bank when he normally makes his Friday deposit? I am against SWAT Teams in 98% of the cases where they are used. You guys are not meant to be figging paramilitary Delta assault teams.

>hoosierham>Too bad this vet didn’t take out some of the thugs invading his home. You know the law enforcement community will never admit the whole thing was their fault.<<

Once upon a time I honestly felt a big empty hole in my gut when it was announced that an officer of the law had been killed while performing his duties. These days, no such feelings for them. My fault or theirs? IMO, THEIRS!
