The Atlantic: The Tragedy of Sarah Palin
The Atlantic ^ | 05/16/2011 | Joshua Green

Posted on 05/16/2011 6:40:48 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

From the moment Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech electrified the Republican convention, she was seen as an unbending, hard-charging, red-meat ideologue—to which soon was added “thin-skinned” and “vindictive.” But a look at what Palin did while in office in Alaska—the only record she has—shows a very different politician: one who worked with Democrats to tame Big Oil and solve the great problem at the heart of the state’s politics. That Sarah Palin might have set the nation on a different course. What went wrong?

It’s hard to escape Sarah Palin. On Facebook and Twitter, cable news and reality television, she is a constant object of dispute, the target or instigator of some distressingly large proportion of the political discourse. If she runs for president—well, brace yourself! But there is one place where a kind of collective resolve has been able to push her aside, make her a less suffocating presence than almost everywhere else: Alaska.

During a week spent traveling there recently, I learned that Palin occupies a place in the minds of most Alaskans roughly like that of an ex-spouse from a stormy marriage: she’s a distant bad memory, and questions about her seem vaguely unwelcome. Visitors to Juneau, the capital and a haven for cruise-ship tourism, are hard-pressed to find signs of the state’s most famous citizen—no “Mama Grizzly” memorabilia or T-shirts bearing her spunky slogans. Although the town was buzzing with politics because the legislature was in session, talk of Palin mainly revolved around a rumored Democratic poll showing her to be less popular in Alaska right now than Barack Obama. The only tangible evidence I saw was her official portrait in the capitol and a small sign in the window of a seedy-looking gift shop advertising “Sarah Palin toilet paper.” Alaska has moved on.

They know she's inevitable.

They knew it the first time they saw her.

It's why they go insane ever time they think of her.

Sarah Louise Palin

Born February 11, 1964 in Sandpoint, ID (Meets the Jus Soli Requirement)

Parents were
Charles R Heath, born in ID
Sarah Sheeran, born in WI

Both parents were US Citizens at the time of her birth (Meets the Jus Sanguinis Requirement)

This description applies better to the Communist ideologue, narcissist, Metrosexual-in-Chief 0bamao than it does to Sarah Palin.

For him, however, I would replace “red-meat” with “red-soviet”.

I’d like to hear from people in Alaska if Sarah really is a distant bad memory. If so, I don’t get it. She had astronomically high ratings there. Maybe Alaskans aren’t as independent minded as they like to think if the steady stream of MSM anti-Sarah poison has changed their POV.

no “Mama Grizzly” memorabilia or T-shirts bearing her spunky slogans.

You see, this is how the left judges...you have to be a pop-star for them to like you. Name one other politician that has T-shirts with their likeness or message being sold now--other than that media/Soros/ creation, Husseim obama.

If Sarah did have a T-shirt, it should read "It's the Communism Stupid."

At the order of the DemocRAT party the media destroyed Sarah Palin through vicious unwarranted attacks on her and her family, virtually from the first moment she was announced as McCain’s running mate. Now they have the nerve to ask what happened to her.

All of a sudden, there’s more media trashing Sarah. They are are trying to destroy her chances of running. And she’s been very quiet lately. There’s a chance she won’t run, but I think she will. When she declares, the whole thing is going to erupt. There are a bunch of folks waiting patiently. At least some of us are.

Whether your a Palin fan or not - it’s gonna get ugly and be a whole lot of fun.

RE: All of a sudden, there’s more media trashing Sarah

Yep, and she has not even announced her intention of running, much less formed an exploratory committee like Michele Bachmann.

Let’s face it, the left IS afraid that she will run. She is the candidate they fear most.

That’s why there is so much effort promoting the likes of Mitt Romney...

This is the time for Sarah to step up to the plate! America needs her more than ever. Yes, the leftwing press will attempt to asassinate her daily. If she loses, then this nation (formerly under God) will get the just results of 4 more years of the pretender Obama. At this point it’s not about Sarah, It’s about the republic and we the people need to stand up and give this greatest gift of God one more chance to survive. May God be with you Sarah, America, and the State of Israel!

I think she WILL announce, but will do when SHE is ready. Thus far, that approach looks pretty darned good. Huckabee has already dropped out, and Newt has self-destructed in less than a week after announcing. At that rate, she will be "last woman standing" without expending any needed resources.

While trying to portray Palin as an egotistical, power-mad, scheming political operative, (Green quotes Dem foes of Palin...would they lie?) Green admits Palin left the state in much better shape when she left then before she became governor. Green wails that Palin switched from being someone who would cooperate with the other side and tranformed into an EVIL CONSERVATIVE!!! (gasp, brrr, shudder) with a conservative agenda. In short, Palin has principles with which she will not compromise. This is something libs cannot hack. They know she’s not afraid to advance those conservative principles. Undoubtedly, as president, like Reagan, Palin would make compromises. But her overall goal would be to advance conservative principles. This is why they hate her so much.

The stage is being set for the Republican Party to nominate another RINO and thus insure obama a second term. During which time, he will complete the destruction of the United States of America, as it once existed.

I myself will not knowingly again vote for another RINO. After he picked Sarrah for his running mate I voted for John Mc Cain. The I made a promise to myself that I would never vote again for the lesser of two evils. If that means two terms of obama, so be it.

Yep, one wonders what universe the Marxbots live in.

I’m not sure Palin will run. But it is hillarious watching both the GOP and demrats pretend she’s invisible. I think, whether she runs or not, she is doing a great job being the the only so-called conservative candidate challenging Onada on the seminal issues. At the same time she is allowing the Pubbie pres. cand. field to sort out. Huckabee dropping out is great news. I’m optimistic the Gingrich campaign will flounder on the rocks fairly early on.

I’m hoping Cain and West gain traction. And I like Michelle Bachmann. These three, like Pallin, are taking the fight to the demrats. Sadly we will not see Romney and Paul disappear anytime soon. Money and zealotry, respectively, will keep them around even though their freshness date has long since expired.

My wife doesn’t think Palin, because she’s female, can win—even though she personally likes her. But if one believes that than one must believe that neither Cain or West could win the presidency because they’re black. I need only point to Onada to make my point. Voters might be reluctant to see another black man in the WH after the Onada disaster.

As for myself, I’m hopeful a majority of voters will select the best person for the office based the candidate’s stated and demonstrated beliefs—not the other guy’s record or saying one thing to one group while saying sonething else to another group.

You’d of course have to account for her flaws, already evident back home, which would undoubtedly have materialized. But had she run as a reformer, these would have amounted to a character trait—not her defining trait—and one shared by many successful politicians. It’s amazing what the media can see fit to forgive in someone who they are convinced is a true maverick. Just look at her running mate!

Finally got to the point. If she had only acted more like a leftist the "media" would have portrayed her more favorably. After all, look how well it worked out for President Bush.

We do have to be very careful of who we pick as a candidate. Our candidate has to appeal to a broad range of voters. Palin’s biggest problem is, she is so polarizing and controversial. She stands little to no chance of winning among the General Public. She carries every bit as much baggage with her as Romney, Trump and Gingrich. The details are different, but the result will be the same.

There needs to be a fresh new candidate like Cain who is not an easy MSM target. Like it or not, that is the reality of 2011 American Politics.

I rarely watch reality TV, but when Sarah had that phoney baloney good time whining Kate Goselin freezing in the Alaskan rain, I knew she was the next Margaret Thatcher and worthy to be my President. Meanwhile Goselins blessed (but abused) little kids were crawling all over her dad to learn about fish and bugs, and stuff. Todd was on the other side of the island minding his own business. This woman has it and I mean to support her anyway that I can. This is from someone the libs would call sexist, etc.

Your statement is naive beyond belief.

Anyone who has an (R) behind their name and is causing damage will be tarred the same way.

If you think Cain is the only one immune to this, I think you ought to look at how the MSM has treated other black candidates with an (R) behind their name.

Your logic fails here, and you should stop repeating this misinformation, because it's flat out wrong.

If she runs, she'll have the opportunity to change minds. If she runs she'll have a full throated campaign. If she runs, she may be the one candidate who can run her campaign directly at the MSM, rather than kow tow to the meme that conservatives have to sit down and shut up.

Your desire that we modify our message is so entirely wrong at this juncture in history.

We need bold candidates who draw bold differences in truth, not mushy, mealy mouthed moderates who simply echo the Marxist agenda while the country dies.

Our candidate has to appeal to a broad range of voters. Palin’s biggest problem is, she is so polarizing and controversial.

Baloney!! You are either part of the problem or have been hoodwinked by those who are. The political consultants are always parroting the same line as you and they always help elect a Democrat.

Why do Democrats modify their approach and move to the right during election time? They do it to seem less threatening to the "moderates" than they really are. When we modify our position and move toward the left we simply water down our message and it ends up tweedle dee vs tweedle dum and with the media, the unions, Wall Street, voter fraud and the stupid on their side they always win.

This country is mostly conservative, not progressive. When we field a candidate that is a true conservative and who sticks to the conservative message, we win. The last time was Ronald Reagan. Bush 1 simply rode on Reagan's coattails and Bush 2 was better than Gore but even at that he barely won. Neither Bush had a strong conservative message. How did we take over the House and improve our position in the Senate? Conservatives who ran as conservatives won.

Palin is our best chance and the fact that the media has been after her since her first speech at the Republican convention should be proof enough that she is who the Democrats are most afraid of. That McCain's political consultants tried to shut her up so as to not detract from McCain's moderate image is further proof.

Cain would be fine with me as would Allen West. We actually have a number of fine candidates as long as none of them follow your advice.
