The Atlantic: The Tragedy of Sarah Palin
The Atlantic ^ | 05/16/2011 | Joshua Green

Posted on 05/16/2011 6:40:48 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

From the moment Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech electrified the Republican convention, she was seen as an unbending, hard-charging, red-meat ideologue—to which soon was added “thin-skinned” and “vindictive.” But a look at what Palin did while in office in Alaska—the only record she has—shows a very different politician: one who worked with Democrats to tame Big Oil and solve the great problem at the heart of the state’s politics. That Sarah Palin might have set the nation on a different course. What went wrong?

It’s hard to escape Sarah Palin. On Facebook and Twitter, cable news and reality television, she is a constant object of dispute, the target or instigator of some distressingly large proportion of the political discourse. If she runs for president—well, brace yourself! But there is one place where a kind of collective resolve has been able to push her aside, make her a less suffocating presence than almost everywhere else: Alaska.

During a week spent traveling there recently, I learned that Palin occupies a place in the minds of most Alaskans roughly like that of an ex-spouse from a stormy marriage: she’s a distant bad memory, and questions about her seem vaguely unwelcome. Visitors to Juneau, the capital and a haven for cruise-ship tourism, are hard-pressed to find signs of the state’s most famous citizen—no “Mama Grizzly” memorabilia or T-shirts bearing her spunky slogans. Although the town was buzzing with politics because the legislature was in session, talk of Palin mainly revolved around a rumored Democratic poll showing her to be less popular in Alaska right now than Barack Obama. The only tangible evidence I saw was her official portrait in the capitol and a small sign in the window of a seedy-looking gift shop advertising “Sarah Palin toilet paper.” Alaska has moved on.

She is generating a lot of press and it's saying a whole lot of nothing new.

Daniels is the only other candidate taking flack right now.

I wonder why Pawlenty's escaped.

“If I’m not mistaken Gov. Palin has already stated she doesn’t need a exploratory committee.”

I saw that interview on Fox I think....Why the committee?.....Attendance to events that she headlines pretty much sums up the support if she declares....Ironic isn’t it?....The ones exploring are the ones with very little support.....

"This is the time for Sarah to step up to the plate! America needs her more than ever. Yes, the leftwing press will attempt to asassinate her daily. If she loses, then this nation (formerly under God) will get the just results of 4 more years of the pretender Obama."

I think she WILL announce, but will do when SHE is ready. Thus far, that approach looks pretty darned good. Huckabee has already dropped out, and Newt has self-destructed in less than a week after announcing. At that rate, she will be "last woman standing" without expending any needed resources.

While trying to portray Palin as an egotistical, power-mad, scheming political operative, (Green quotes Dem foes of Palin...would they lie?) Green admits Palin left the state in much better shape when she left then before she became governor. Green wails that Palin switched from being someone who would cooperate with the other side and tranformed into an EVIL CONSERVATIVE!!! (gasp, brrr, shudder) with a conservative agenda. In short, Palin has principles with which she will not compromise. This is something libs cannot hack. They know she’s not afraid to advance those conservative principles. Undoubtedly, as president, like Reagan, Palin would make compromises. But her overall goal would be to advance conservative principles. This is why they hate her so much.

Only someone without a sense of irony could call her vindictive after what the democrats did to her just because she dared to run for vice president.

So Alaska has moved on? I guess this is unlike Joshua Green and hundreds of other tabloid reporters that continue to write about her.

Like it or not, go pretty much anywhere on the web and you will find articles like this. (Outside of Palin’s own site.) Of course they are Leftist, of course they are from the MSM, but America is pretty much in their control. And it will only get much worse if she decides to run.

The stage is being set for the Republican Party to nominate another RINO and thus insure obama a second term. During which time, he will complete the destruction of the United States of America, as it once existed.

I myself will not knowingly again vote for another RINO. After he picked Sarrah for his running mate I voted for John Mc Cain. The I made a promise to myself that I would never vote again for the lesser of two evils. If that means two terms of obama, so be it.

Only by the propagandizing, bitchy Commie queers who lie for The Atlantic.

That sounds suspiciously politically incorrect.

Daniels is taking flack from conservatives, not the MSM. The MSM loves him, heck even Chrissie Matthews loves him.

That should tell you something.

Yep, we should give up, just take the candidates they assign us, shut up and sit down. That's the ticket......

Yep, one wonders what universe the Marxbots live in.

I’m not sure Palin will run. But it is hillarious watching both the GOP and demrats pretend she’s invisible. I think, whether she runs or not, she is doing a great job being the the only so-called conservative candidate challenging Onada on the seminal issues. At the same time she is allowing the Pubbie pres. cand. field to sort out. Huckabee dropping out is great news. I’m optimistic the Gingrich campaign will flounder on the rocks fairly early on.

I’m hoping Cain and West gain traction. And I like Michelle Bachmann. These three, like Pallin, are taking the fight to the demrats. Sadly we will not see Romney and Paul disappear anytime soon. Money and zealotry, respectively, will keep them around even though their freshness date has long since expired.

My wife doesn’t think Palin, because she’s female, can win—even though she personally likes her. But if one believes that than one must believe that neither Cain or West could win the presidency because they’re black. I need only point to Onada to make my point. Voters might be reluctant to see another black man in the WH after the Onada disaster.

As for myself, I’m hopeful a majority of voters will select the best person for the office based the candidate’s stated and demonstrated beliefs—not the other guy’s record or saying one thing to one group while saying sonething else to another group.
