German paper says Iranians paid cash to build mid-range missile launch pads on Paraguana Peninsula; Iranian engineers visited site in Feb.

BERLIN – The Iranian government is moving forward with the construction of rocket launch bases in Venezuela, the German daily Die Welt wrote in its Friday edition.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is Teheran’s most important South American ally.

Iran is building intermediate- range missile launch pads on the Paraguaná Peninsula, and engineers from a construction firm – Khatam al-Anbia – owned by the Revolutionary Guards visited Paraguaná in February. Amir al-Hadschisadeh, the head of the Guard’s Air Force, participated in the visit, according to the report. Die Welt cited information from “Western security insiders.”

The rocket bases are to include measures to prevent air attacks on Venezuela as well as commando and control stations.

The Iranian military involvement in the project extends to bunker, barracks and watch tower construction. Twenty-meter deep rocket silos are planned. The cost of the Venezuelan military project is being paid for with Iranian oil revenue.

According to Die Welt, the clandestine agreement between Venezuela and Iran would mean the Chavez government would fire rocket at Iran’s enemies should the Islamic Republic face military strikes

I checked Google earth. Its 1800 km from Venz to the southern tip of the US. The above article says those NK weapons have ranges of 2500 -3500KM.

That's just lovely. If it's 1800 km from Venezuela to the US, then 3500 km has got to put pretty much the whole East Coast in range, right?

What worries me isn’t Iran or Venezuela’s current technology

Exactly. Once the bases are built, nothing exists to prevent a better class of missiles from being based there.

In any case, its a provocation. A real attack would probably come in a container ship, maybe several container ships simultaneously. They are building these bases to rub our noses in it.

My take? He will let this fester and fester for months, and then pull a Cuban missile crisis in the final days of the reelection campaign. Idiots who know nothing and are easily "flipped" will whoop and holler and yell "USA!"

That would piss off the Hispanics voters. Obama does nothing OTOH Columbia ....

How convenient for Obama to "WAG THE DOG" in mid October 2012 sur de la frontera in Venezuela when the charges by his GOP opponent of being soft on national security start to stick and tank his numbers.

You may well be right.

....and just the ability to threaten our Allies in the region can do enough to destabilize all of South America...right in our back yard

Do we have any. I thought 0 had pissed them all off already.

Yeah 3500 km goes all the way up to the very southern tip of Maine. over to the eastern great lakes and down to eastern texas.

I’m using google earth’s rulers function. You place one point in Venz and then you can swing the other end of the line anywhere you want and it tells you the distance.

Paraguaná Peninsula

Pretty much indefensible from an attack by sea.

Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, both U.S. territories with strategic military importance, are just 500 miles from Venezuela. With these missiles, Iran poses a threat to the approaches to the Panama Canal and to world trade.

Well, I hope the US keeps it mouth shut and allows them to dump a pile of cash into it...then blow it to hell a few days before it’s operational.

Iranian Missiles in Venzuela.....”the clandestine agreement between Venezuela and Iran would mean the Chavez government would fire rocket at Iran’s enemies should the Islamic Republic face military strikes.”

Well this does sound like a pre-lude to a Cuban Missle Crisis type event. Few people, apart from FR, realiz how close we came...just a finger away.

And what does Barry have to say about this?...nothing I suppose.

Think of it this way. Our new President in 2013 will have a purpose for all those spare nukes we have lying around that we thought we would never use.

“Premier Hussein” could very well be staging this by allowing it to go far enough so he can come in at the last moment as a hero...pulling a Ben-Laden type hero event.
