No restrooms at 9/11 Memorial and Museum
New York Post ^ | May 22, 2011 | Anne Karni

The National September 11th Memorial and Museum is flush with cash -- but not bathrooms.

The nonprofit foundation running the $508 million project is expecting millions of visitors from across the globe to flock to lower Manhattan when it opens this year on the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks. But there won't be a single toilet available on the eight-acre green plaza -- a planning oversight now raising concerns in closed-door meetings.

Two large reflecting pools and cascading waterfalls on the site are intended to create a serene environment for quiet contemplation of the lives lost during the terror attacks. They may also be a frustrating reminder there's nowhere to relieve oneself.

Nothing like the sound of a waterfall to get you thinking, “Now where did they hide the restrooms?”

When they do get around to installing them, they need to make sure that just like the FLT 93 “Crescent of Embrace” memorial, they face mecca.

Yeah, but you have to give the local business(s) credit for not only making their facilities available for the expected crowds, but actually preparing for them.

Preparation.. something you rarely see from a government agency.

They should have taken some hair or ashes from bin laden and worked them into the porcelain in the toilet bowls and put up 50 toilets.

In that area of the city, the LAST thing you want are public restrooms. Unless you want the visitors to have a great view of the local fauna taking showers in the toilets, and cooking crack in the sinks.

There will be bathrooms in the Train stations below.

I'd be contemplating all the money the memorial foundation's board and employees helped themselves to.

‘’When in Rome....’’ as someone who worked in Manhattan for years I can tell you folks will do what they always do; relieve themselves in the streets or on the sub-way platforms. I used to see people doing that all the time. And it wasn’t just homeless people doing it either.

Most business’ restrooms are for customer use only.

Perhaps the giant mosque across the street will welcome them?

With thousands of extra, non paying, customers, I wonder if the businesses are going to be compensated by the city or can charge?

Can’t say which is more stupid.

A man spending his entire life savings on advertising the end of the world is here, or the 911 memorial planning board having a major brain fart that leaves out basic human needs like bathrooms. LOL

Maybe Newt’s week beats them both.

Who designed the memorial?

Was Muslim money involved?

Did elite liberals influence the project?

A third year Architecture student wouldn't make this ‘mistake’...Was this intentional?

You know if this was a commercial program being built by developers, somewhere in the massive amounts of paperwork they must complete, there must be a form filled out in triplicate that shows how many bathrooms by gender, how to achieve gender equability in number of stalls and time tables on usage so men and women have equal time so women are not discriminatory waiting in line to pee

So they are telling me no NYC agency made them jump though hoops of fire to do this???

I find it hard to believe

For over 50 of my 58 years, I have lived and worked in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, (and went to school in the Bronx), and I believe I have seen people publicly relieve themselves perhaps 3 or 4 times, and at least half were homeless.

I don’t know where you worked (in a jail?) but I think your “memory” is FOS.

One would have thought that the arguments between the proponents of “FLUSH” and “NON-FLUSH” toilets would have, in itself, have provided a review. However, if the “NON-FLUSHERS” were already in charge, they WON the ultimate victory....no more waste products in out drains.

In summer 2003 we visited Ground Zero, this was back when the site was pretty much razed but no real construction had taken place; it was just a large hole surrounded by fencing. Even so, there were huge crowds daily, and IIRC the local businesses were pretty good about allowing people to use their bathrooms without technically requiring patronization. I was actually impressed with their tolerance. I stood with my 5 year old in a line of about 30 for the bathroom in the BK across the street and it couldn’t have been at all conducive to running a successful business as it paralyzed that entire side of the dining area.

Who knows, maybe enough of them do buy food to make it worth their while but it looked like a huge hassle.

I traveled to/worked in New York City for ten years and there was hardly a week that when I was there, mainly Manhattan, that I did not observe someone relieving themselves in public. Mainly “homeless” looking people. Maybe out of towners notice it more because they don’t see it much in the neighborhoods.
