No restrooms at 9/11 Memorial and Museum

The National September 11th Memorial and Museum is flush with cash -- but not bathrooms.

The nonprofit foundation running the $508 million project is expecting millions of visitors from across the globe to flock to lower Manhattan when it opens this year on the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks. But there won't be a single toilet available on the eight-acre green plaza -- a planning oversight now raising concerns in closed-door meetings.

Two large reflecting pools and cascading waterfalls on the site are intended to create a serene environment for quiet contemplation of the lives lost during the terror attacks. They may also be a frustrating reminder there's nowhere to relieve oneself.

In summer 2003 we visited Ground Zero, this was back when the site was pretty much razed but no real construction had taken place; it was just a large hole surrounded by fencing. Even so, there were huge crowds daily, and IIRC the local businesses were pretty good about allowing people to use their bathrooms without technically requiring patronization. I was actually impressed with their tolerance. I stood with my 5 year old in a line of about 30 for the bathroom in the BK across the street and it couldn’t have been at all conducive to running a successful business as it paralyzed that entire side of the dining area.

Who knows, maybe enough of them do buy food to make it worth their while but it looked like a huge hassle.

I worked in the union construction industry in the South Bronx, Times Square(when it was a real Hell-hole) and much lower of Manhattan, in the Financial District.

For over 50 of my 58 years, I have lived and worked in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens

You must not remember what fresh air smells like. Every visitor that rides the subway gets to breath Harlem urine.

I traveled to/worked in New York City for ten years and there was hardly a week that when I was there, mainly Manhattan, that I did not observe someone relieving themselves in public. Mainly “homeless” looking people. Maybe out of towners notice it more because they don’t see it much in the neighborhoods.

They only noticed this oversight when someone noticed there were no muslim footbaths.

I think Karen Hetzer should be commissioned to paint the urinals in the men’s room.

This is not good.

The cascading waterfalls alone would have me looking for a restroom.

I no longer care about several parts of our country. I don't care about NYC.

Maybe they can plant 8-10 Porta-Potties into
this "serene environment." Oh, and don't forget
to make at least one a handicapped flavor.

I have no use for this. A TRUE monument to those slaughtered by the muzlems would have been to rebuild the towers exactly as they were except 20 feet taller.

I agree.

Doesn't the Hoover Dam also entomb a few unfortunate workers? They should have re-built the towers.

They figure the muslim visitors will all just make their water on America - like the president does.

People will just have to go to nearby businesses

Ever been in that area? Not likely to happen. (For one thing, a lot of office buildings in the area.)

Simple answer here, make the designers fix the problem and do it correctly. Deduct the difference from their compensation.

I'm sick of hearing about "they". Who are they? Name them and identify them then make they pay.
