WASHINGTON -- Claiming his remarks earlier this week on borders for Israel and a future Palestinian state had been misrepresented, President Obama said Sunday that "1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps" means the two sides will "negotiate a border that is different than the one that existed on June 4, 1967."
In remarks Sunday to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the president tried to explain his earlier position to a warm but occasionally tentative crowd by saying that his speech Thursday at the State Department didn't offer anything new or provocative in the way of peace negotiations.
"There was nothing particularly original in my proposal; this basic framework for negotiations has long been the basis for discussions among the parties, including previous U.S. administrations," he said
"What I did on Thursday was to say publicly what has long been acknowledged privately," he added, saying his remarks were no different than a "well-known formula" that has been worked on for a generation.
"It allows the parties themselves to account for the changes that have taken place over the last 44 years, including the new demographic realities on the ground and the needs of both sides. The ultimate goal is two states for two peoples. Israel as a Jewish state and the homeland for the Jewish people, and the state of Palestine as the homeland for the Palestinian people; each state enjoying self-determination, mutual recognition, and peace," he said.
Since Thursday, tensions between the U.S. and Israel have been sharper than ever. The remarks -- in which the president said he wants Israel and the Palestinians to negotiate a land deal that starts with the 1967 borders -- received considerable criticism, including a public dressing down by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

If we do go back to 1967 borders does that not mean Jordan gets the West Bank? If so I highly doubt they will annex that valuable land to a terrorist organization.

He can’t help it. Take a complex problem, toss aside the facts, “freeze out” your opposition, and chant. Once again, when he met with Bibi, Barry highlights the fact that he is the least experienced, and least knowledgeable person in the room at any meeting he attends on any topic, except maybe street-wise community rabble-rousing.

The Muzz could have had the 1967 borders but that wasn’t good enough. They had to attack Israel, get their asses whipped, and lose territory. They also could have had a better deal years ago with the Oslo Accords which Arafart rejected in favor of continued attacks against Israel.
So then, what exactly did you mean by “contiguous” borders Obama?

If he is so smart and such a great communicator why is it that he doesn't seem to be able to articulate a simple idea clearly? Why does it take days of backtracking and restating what he said earlier to explain his position?

Obama issued a cheap statement and he never tried to do any real work. It hardened Pali position (they declared their decision to seek statehood outside any agreement of recognition of Israel). Hamas confirmed its policy to exterminate Israel and the rest of Arabs didn't react at all or issued a yawn.
Basically Obama is a case of aggressive stupidity. He is also pathetic - he pays with other people/countries well-being for a 5 min bump in the popularity. He cannot buy with anything else...
He misrepresents the facts, he misrepresents his oppositions statements and plans, and now he's misrepresenting that he was misrepresented!
I so wish this election cycle didn't feel like 1996 all over. We need to get this man out of office for our sake and the sake of our allies.
His backpedaling is hurting him as badly as the original remarks. However, it's not NEARLY as damaging as Bibi spanking him in front of the entire world from the White House. That one really hurt Obama and it will definitely make it into campaign commercials.
I thought the very thing. If his statement was truly “mistrepresented”, then why didn’t he clarify it right then?
This is but one more example of White House damage control spin in action. He makes a stupid statement, gets called out on it, and when he realizes how big his gaff was he puts Josef Göbbels Jr. to work trying to fix it.
Obama-lama-ding-dong does not even hide his contempt for Israel any more. He’s a muslim to the core and he will do anything to undermine Israel and get what he can for that muslim septic tank “palestine”.
