Just a few weeks ago, the wife and I were in an AMC theater in Brandon, FL. During the movie, a 6'-6" bald-headed bouncer type was sitting two rows down from us, and he started e-mailing, texting, or surfing the internet during the movie. His screen was very bright and distracting to me. So, I did the only thing I knew to do: I started throwing popcorn at the back of his head. After a few hits, he turned around, but the theater was crowded and he didn't know where it was coming from.
My wife almost had a cow, thinking he was gonna eviscerate me.
But I had my story all planned out in case he called me on it. I was going to tell him, "Hey, I really did you a favor. I had two choices: 1), get you to stop without a confrontation, or 2) go complain to management. The popcorn was non-buttered and it did not injure you, and you didn't get tossed out."
I figured I'm old enough that he would have mercy on an old man and not beat me up. But by the end of the movie, he had forgotten about it, and I just waltzed right by him on the way out with no incident.
No matter how you cut it...It’s still assault.
Some phones have this capability as an optional selection feature for some applications. (IPOD touch when reading e-books with the Amazon Kindle or Barnes & Noble app for instance.)

Normal, civilized people refrain from behaviors that impinge on others’ quiet enjoyment. Just because you and your ilk can’t understand why the light from the phones is annoying to others, doesn’t mean others are wrong or supersensitive.

It’s nice it doesn’t bother you. Why do you denigrate those who are bothered by the phones during a movie?
The screen is on bright the full time and the clicking of the keys is noisy, if you must communicate take it to the lobby. Why must you insist on bothering others? Your rights to communicate end where my rights to enjoy the movie begin.
Society is being run into the ground by people who think they have the right to be rude. And that is what cell phone users do, they are rude. They believe they have the right to be loud, obnoxious idiots who can call and text and chat all they want. They are wrong.
I have gone to management and had people removed for texting. And I always ask for my money back when I do that.

First off, it's my money, my time, and my phone. You are not entitled to an explanation of how I am managing the three. And I don't agree that the light from other phones is really that distracting....to me. As for what bothers other people, that list is endless. Now if the theater has a policy against texting....fine. Post it for all to see. It's their business and they can forbid the use of cell phones if they wish. Just make it clear up front.

Dude, if you need someone to pass or make a law for you to behave yourself then you are an asshole. We don’t need more rules and laws to make rude people behave. If you can’t see or understand that your behavior is wrong for the environment you are in then stay out of that environment. You are not the only one in the theater to pay for being there. And your cost doesn’t give you the right to infringe on the enjoyment of the movie with your electronic device. Take it to the lobby or watch the movie at home. If you insist on being rude in the theater I’m in you’ll find out how uncomfortable that phone will feel as it passes through your bowels.

Most movie theaters now have an announcement at the beginning of the movie that explicitly says “No talking or texting.” So, why are you still texting during the movie when the policy of the theater is clearly communicated before every showing of every movie?
Why do you think it’s ok to be obnoxious and bother other people who have paid a fair bit of money to go to the movie theater for your selfish need to tweet someone? Why is it so hard for you to understand why others would find texting during a movie disturbing? Why does your need to tweet outweigh my ‘need’ to watch the movie undisturbed? Why can’t you leave the theater, transact your phone business, and return to watch the movie?
Who did I "denigrate"? I'm the one watching some of you have have temper tantrums and sling insults because I don't share your view that the whole world is out to ruin my day. Considering how freaked out some of you are over a tiny little LCD screen in a big theater, I'd hate to see how you treat public smokers. I guess they should get the fire extinguisher.
Thanks. Though not getting bad attention in the theater would be a gain. I’d love not to have that blaze of light on my periphery. I’ve seen some people text all the way through a movie. “Oops, I’m sorry I stumbled and spilled my jumbo Coke all over your phone!”

Spot on! I haven’t been to a movie in over five years, nor will I be going to one anytime soon. The last time I was in attendance I had no less than ten illuminated phones in front to distract me. Never again!
Waaay back in the 1970's, theaters did have that room. Parents with children, etc. could stay in there and watch the movie without worrying about distracting other patrons.
I’d love to do that just once. I usually just ask once nicely, and then as unobtrusively as I can slip out and complain. Not a bad deal, they boot the offender and half the time you get a free pass for your next movie.
