Half of American families — including a growing portion of the country’s middle-class — would not be able to cope with an unexpected expense that required them to come up with $2,000 within 30 days according to a study that illustrates both the fragile nature of family finances and the depth of the nation’s financial crisis.
But the Federal, State, City and now County ( Here in Califronia ) tax boards can get $2,000 out of us at will!
Soon we here in California shall be taxed based on Neighborhood watch groupings.
6-18 months from now 1/2 of Americans won’t be able to come up with $500-$1,000. Gonna get worse before it gets better.
I would have to rob from Peter to pay Paul.
Suggestion: Move to Texas.
They should have bought beans and rice...soon that will be a better commodity.

Very sad indeed. As for the government, it needs a combination of spending cuts, entitlement reform, and pro-growth policies, and then get out of the way as much as possible.

An interesting study, but begs the obvious question, at least as reported in this article.
What is the change over time in people being able to meet this criteria? The article implies, but doesn’t bother to demonstrate, that five, ten or twenty years ago more people would have been able to come up with an equivalent sum.
This is the same stuff as the stories about lots of Americans not having saved enough for retirement. While no doubt true, it’s pretty meaningless unless they show the trend over time.

Food debit cards, free rent and medical care. Why would they need money?
I guess keeping up with the Jones now means keeping up with their debt.

But seriously, a lot of these people on disability and welfare pool together in a household of 6 or 8 adults and kids, such that I’m sure their monthly “paychecks” are way more than mine. You are right. Then their money is freed up for cigs and meth.
Fortunatley their/our pensions are secured
Not to mention free cell phones, bus passes, heating assistance, "disability" checks, and the list goes on and on.
They're the ones who answer the polls with "the economy's doing just fine".
