Chris Matthews' New Thrill? Hardball Hosts Flips and Praises 'Serious,' 'Informed' Bachmann
NewsBuusters ^ | 14 Jun 2011 | Scott Whitlock

What is Chris Matthews up to? The MSNBC anchor, who once trashed Michele Bachmann as a "zombie" and a "nutcase," on Tuesday praised the Congresswoman as "poised, informed and serious." Touting Bachmann's performance in Monday's Republican presidential debate, he gushed that the Representative did "great."

The Hardball host, who once battled with Bachmann and wondered if she was "hypnotized," hyped that the debate saw "the emergence of a star." He added, "[Bachmann] was, of course, created here. She came off as...poised, informed and serious. Could she be the candidate that Sarah Palin was supposed to be?"

In an amusing moment, Matthews prefaced a question to Jennifer Donahue of the Huffington Post by proclaiming, "I'm not an active Republican." Regular viewers of MSNBC probably already know that.

A partial transcript of the June 16 segment can be found below:

5pm

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Maybe the biggest story from last night was not Romney's cool or Pawlenty's retreat, but the emergence of a star, Michele Bachmann. She was, of course, created here. She came off as poised, informed, that's right, Gene, poised, informed and serious. Could she be the candidate that Sarah Palin was supposed to be?

5:19

MATTHEWS: Well, there's a woman, person, a friend not afraid of the mainstream media.

MICHAEL STEELE: That's right. She's not.

MATTHEWS: No hiding over in Fox land. First of all, what did you think of her performance last night? Because we all thought she was great.

Chris Matthews gets too much press here on FR. We should try ignoring him for awhile and figure out what it will take to get the right conservative in charge of him and his media realm, IMO.

Simple enough - Matthews doesn’t think she can win.

What does he know about Bachmann that will be used later to sink her candidacy? That I don’t trust him or the MSM is an understatement.

Rollins is in the process of destroying Michele Bachmann's future in the conservative wing of the Republican Party.

Tea Partiers are pretty savvy as well. In fact I thought I just heard a collective WTH?

What Matthews thinks of Bachmann has no effect on me. I’m not Chrissy’s puppet and anyone who is should stay home on election eve.

Whatever the case with Matthews, you can bank on the fact that the hard line Marxists fear only one person.

And it’s not Bachmann.

I think this is a ploy of making sure Sarah doesn’t get into the race..drive her out(She is the one they really fear) get Michele in, the second Michele is in, the media will destroy her, thus getting Romney to be the nominee and Obama getting re-elected..that is their plan

That’s part of it, for sure. Chrissy is trying to head mean ol’ Sarah off at the pass.

How simple can the answer be..............by praising Bachman he is denigrating Palin.

At least he thinks he is. What an A-hole.

Matthews is jumping on the train before it leaves the station. He has to skip his usual insults and acknowledge that Bachmann did well, as was the fact.

I really don't care what effect it has on you. But it will have an effect on Mrs. Bachmann. Rollins is destroying her behind the scenes.

There is no way all the Liberal Love today is a coincidence. MSNBC is the media wing of the White House. Got to hand it to them. It is pretty clever.
