'Iran successfully launches satellite into orbit'
Jerusalem Post ^ | 6/15/2011 | Yaakov Katz

Iran increased its presence in space on Wednesday with the successful launch of a new satellite. Israel is concerned that Iran’s space program is cover for the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that could one day carry nuclear warheads.

Iran's Arabic language al-Alam television reported that a satellite called Rasad 1 – “Observation” in Farsi – was launched aboard an improved satellite launch vehicle and will be used for transmitting images and weather forecasts.

The Rasad 1 is the second satellite Iran has launched into space. In February 2009, Iran launched the Omid – “Hope” in Farsi - satellite and is in the midst of an ambitious space program with plans to launch a larger satellite from a new launch vehicle called Simorgh in the coming year.

Israel closely tracked the missile launch with various sensors included the X-Band radar that the United States stationed in the Negev Desert in late 2008.

It's nice of Israel to be concerned about the rest of the world, but they have more immediate problems to deal with. Let Europe and The US worry about their own problems.

First of all, Iran doesn't need ballistic missiles to nuke Israel, so why should Israel care?
Second of all, if the sandmaggots do fire any ballistic missiles the first few are just as likely to hit Senegal as their intended target. After the first few launches, Iran will no longer BE problem.

So I repeat.
Who cares?
Why is this news?

Just out of curiosity, is there an international satellite map somewhere that lets people know where these things can be placed in orbit or can any country just launch one and play the odds that it won’t run into another one at some point?

I'm in favor of tracking satellites and then deliberately running something into them.

Unsure about “any” country, but in moslem countries they probably launch them, say *inshallah*, and hope for the best!

I remember reading headlines after Sputnik was launched that this was the cheapest Pearl Harbor that we will ever see.

This is serious. Satellites can contain an EMP.

Does anyone know if its orbit goes over America?
