The foolishness of God is wiser than the wisdom of men.
Men are always trying to one up God, with exactly the same results: Failure.
You do not injure your child, you punish in love, but Punish has to get their attention. I'd rather they cry a bit when they are young rather than cry a lot when they are grown unruly adults.
NAILED IT
If this mother was spanking for discipline rather than beating in anger, THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!
The whippings my Paw inflicted on me with a leather belt on my bare behind eighty years ago didnt do me a bit of good. I turned out bad anyway.
So very true!!!
The loonies are running the asylum!
It's called body learning. 2 y.o. kids don't understand 'don't touch the stove' but they can be conditioned with whacks to the butt to leave the damn thing alone.
Failing to discipline childen and world-proof them is the real barbarity.

In traditional steppe nomad cultures, two was the age when a child was first given a bow and arrows, and first trained to ride, typically on the backs of sheep.
We have become very soft.
B.S.!
“Hitting a kid who’s not even TWO??? That’s barbaric. As much as I despise the child welfare state, this woman did a horrible thing and is probably on her way to worse. “
I guess you could try to negotiate with a two year old, but spanking worked JUST FINE with my kids at age two (and much younger).
But it’s a free world, and you’re welcome to apply your advanced diplomatic skills on the little twerps, if that is what you wish.
She didn’t hit anyone, she spanked a two year old.
She didn’t hit anyone, she spanked a two year old. Maybe she should have just reasoned with the child.
If you spank them before they are two properly, then you won't HAVE to discipline them nearly as much for the next 15-20 years. But if you let things go at this age, I can promise you much more trouble afterwards because you will have a much harder time correcting the bad behaviors that will have set in place.
There's a website/book, something like Raising Godly Tomatoes, that makes this common sense point in great detail.
so the “paternal” grandmother got custody and was the one who turned her in.....very interesting....very fishy...
A baby is a "little twerp"?
I hope you don't mean that.
“Leaving marks” implies that the child was beaten; I find that extremely hard to believe if the prosecutor is letting her off on probation and letting her have visitation rights! I have dealt with the Texas CPS (as a witness and with family members) and they are as about fanatical as you can get when it comes to the “It’s for the chill’ren!” motto! So, I call BS on this whole thing!
But, more importantly, when a child is old enough to get into things then they are old enough to begin receiving some form of corporal punishment. I have a 15 month old grandson who gets his hand slapped more than once - DAILY!
For all of the self-righteous fools who think you should not give corporal punishment to a child, I pray that you are blessed with one of the VERY few well-mannered, naturally docile kids. But more than likely, the time will come when something more than a “stern lecture” is needed!!
Besides, gotta keep those conviction stats up in order to get re-elected.
Yes, two year old brats can be little twerps. They can be worse than that.
Without structure the little twerps can be obnoxious spoiled brats.
I’ve seen them talk back to their parents and run around restaurants. It’s not pretty and it is all avoidable.
My thoughts exactly. Mom needs to regain full custody and then cut this witch completely out of her life and her children's lives, moving out of state if necessary to get completely out of this judge's reach. Assuming that this was a red bottom that faded after Grandma had observed the "marks" and not a whipping that was still visible many days later, I'd back the mother 100%. That grandmother is a busybody who should never see her grandchildren again for as long as she lived if she complained to the police over a swat on the bottom. As for the judge, he's going to have a lot of business in a couple decades if parents today can't think of another effective option and are afraid to spank (appropriately and reasonably gently) even when necessary.
There is a reason they call it the TERRIBLE TWO’s.
