Weiner Won’t Speak at High School Commencement (his alma mater)
New York Times ^ | June 16, 2011 | ANNA M. PHILLIPS

Anthony D. Weiner’s alma mater confirmed Thursday that it had canceled his speech at its graduation because of the scandal surrounding his sexually explicit communications with women.

Brooklyn Technical High School, one of the city’s most competitive public high schools and the one Mr. Weiner graduated from in 1981, withdrew the invitation after parents and administrators questioned the wisdom of having him address an auditorium of high school seniors.

“I just don’t think at this point it was a good message to send across to the students, especially in a graduation ceremony when the commencement speaker has issues that are all over the media,” said Enid Febus, co-president of the school’s parent association and the mother of a Brooklyn Tech senior.

Mr. Weiner announced Thursday that he was resigning his seat in Congress. He was in his seventh term representing a district that includes parts of Brooklyn and Queens.

Ms. Febus said she had learned Thursday that Mr. Weiner would not be speaking at the school’s graduation on June 27.

Members of the parents association approached the principal, Randy Asher, with concerns several days ago, she said, and he agreed that Mr. Weiner was no longer a viable option. Meanwhile, students and teachers had written messages on Twitter and Facebook wondering whether the congressman dominating the week’s headlines would make an appearance at their school.

“He is not speaking at Tech this year,” Mr. Asher wrote on Thursday in an e-mail responding to a request for comment.

In a later e-mail, he added: “The final decision was made by the student government officers (it is their graduation, and they select and invite the speakers) with my support.

I think he was supposed to be the geek who was teased about his name who broke through all the barriers...only to spend his whole life focused (including self-directed focused cameras) on his wiener after all.

Not exactly a commencement speech in the making.

FWIW - I’m not seeing any record of him playing hockey at SUNY Plattsburgh, as he claims. Starting at his graduation year, you can easily go back through the rosters. Am I missing something, or is this yet another fraud?

I’m surprised he went to Brooklyn Tech, thats actually a very very good school, and its a pure meritocracy to get in, and to graduate. Well connected kids can’t get in there, and with all due respect, I’ve never heard of anyone think Weiner was actually that smart (he’s basically a political thug).

But, he’s available for one-on-one counseling with the graduating class. Don’t call him, he’ll call you.

Good catch. A friend of mine and I were just laughing the other day at the thought of Weinerhead playing hockey. Smells like fraud. Maybe, intramural hockey.

It was a very good school, but I think Tech had lost a lot of its luster by the time the perv got there. jmho

My dad was a Tech graduate and went on to have a wonderful career as an engineer. Unlike Weiner, he used his education to do something productive.
