Weiner Resigns in Chaotic Final Scene
New York Times ^ | June 16, 2011 | RAYMOND HERNANDEZ

Posted on 06/16/2011 8:49:39 PM PDT by Second Amendment First

Representative Anthony D. Weiner, a once-promising politician whose Brooklyn roots and scrappy style made him a leading candidate to be the next mayor of New York, resigned his seat on Thursday, ending a three-week scandal over his lewd online behavior that startled his constituents and alienated many of his colleagues.

Mr. Weiner made the decision after long and emotional discussions with his political advisers and his wife, Huma Abedin, whom friends described as devastated by the behavior of her husband of 11 months, and worried about the couple’s financial future.

In a chaotic four-minute news conference at a senior center in his district, Mr. Weiner, 46, strained to be heard as a small group of hecklers hollered vulgar questions at him and called him a “pervert” while puzzled elderly constituents looked on.

“I am here today to again apologize for the personal mistakes I have made and the embarrassment I have caused,” Mr. Weiner said.

A seven-term Democrat, Mr. Weiner had hoped his declaration last weekend that he would seek mental health treatment and take a temporary leave from Congress would ease the pressure from Democratic leaders for him to step down. But their demands only grew louder as revelations about his conduct continued.

“I am announcing my resignation from Congress, so my colleagues can get back to work, my neighbors can choose a new representative and most important so that my wife and I can continue to heal from the damage I have caused,” Mr. Weiner said at the news conference.

Ms. Abedin was with Mr. Weiner at his Queens apartment as he prepared to make his statement, but did not appear at his side at the event.

When I heard this presser on the radio today, I was gritting my teeth at the whole tenor of his announcement. He almost sounded triumphant against some evil force. Then the hecklers started. I laughed out loud so hard. This is how this sick pervert should be treated. Like the feeble loser he is.

I hope we find out the names of the men who heckled this POS so that they can receive my thanks for putting this presser back into perspective.

Some callers to local talk shows (Boston area), said they recognized the voices of the heckler/hecklers as being either an intern or interns from the Howard Stern show.

You are right. Just looked it up. I haven't heard Stern since he left regular radio, but I remember the bits sending Benji out to harass dim witted celebrities.

Benji, Thank You. Your interruption was perfectly timed and well needed. The country thanks you.

. . . worried about the couple’s financial future . . .

Let's see. In eleven years he receives a pension of $54,000.00 a year, currently enjoys a terrific health plan to keep the weiner in shape, and still gets to use the Congessional gym. My, that really is something to worry about!

Weiner planned to make a comeback using that $5 Million campaign war chest he’s got, but Howard Stern, of all people, put a quick end to that.

And don’t forget the $4 million he has in his campaign fund that he gets to keep. Congress takes care of themselves. Both parties.

Financial Future????.....U mean the Weiner will have to get a real job????....JEEEEZ!

Congress should be paid the US median income...Not a penny more...and adjust it yearly...that way, when they kill the economy they cut their own wages..

Anyone find it odd she didn’t take his last name when they got married?
Then again, that would of made her Huma Weiner. Doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue....

These confused fossils are the prototypical Democrat voters who are just senile enough to fall for the Democrats' scare mongering campaigns.

I'm half sorry that he resigned. Not just because he constituted a weakness in the Democrats' defenses, but because he was a known entity. Better the pervert you know is a pervert than the one you don't.

Bu of course, he had to go. The Democrats had no use for him once his sins were out in the open. His strings were cut. He was no longer manipulable.

I agree too.
But the timing couldn’t of been sweeter. Weiner was about to lead a charge to have Clarence Thomas removed from casting a decision on the looming supreme court case on Obamacare’s constitutionality.
That way the court would had the best chance to split 4-4 and keep Obamacare alive.
Weiner was neck deep in that garbage. The timing is a big win for the US.

Me too! That was freaking brilliant! "Congressman! Congressman Weiner! Were you fully erect? ... Will you keep your hot physique?" I almost fell out of my chair! Then you heard that guy in the front yell, "He's not with us! Get him out of here!"

They changed the law back in the ‘80s so Congressmen/Senators/candidates no longer get to keep their campaign contributions as personal funds.

They DO, as I recall, get to decide where those funds go, however. He can give to the DNC/DCCC/OFA or maybe given how supportive his Dem colleagues have been, to the Salvation Army.
