The NASA scientist who once claimed the Bush administration tried to "silence" his global warming claims is now accused of receiving more than $1.2 million from the very environmental organizations whose agenda he advocated.
In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Washington, D.C., a group claims NASA is withholding documents that show James Hansen failed to comply with ethics rules and financial disclosures regarding substantial compensation he earned outside his $180,000 taxpayer-paid position as director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies.
"Hansen's office appears to be somewhat of a rogue operation. It's clearly a taxpayer-funded global warming advocacy organization," said Chris Horner, a co-founder of The American Tradition Institute, which filed the lawsuit. "The real issue here is, has Hansen been asking NASA in writing, in advance, for permission for these outside activities? We have reason to believe that has not been occurring."

Getting Hansen as a trophy on the wall would be a good thing.
The truth of the matter is that he will never be fired. Civil service union employees just aren't, period.
We might succeed in hounding him into resigning, but the MSM will continue to tout his doctored bilge from the "former NASA scientist, James Hansen...." as if it's the Gospel. And in fact he'll prolly wind up better off financially, like AlGore, is he left NASA.
NASA and Hansen need some kind of smack-down for all the years we’ve had to put up with their “Science” smack.
This makes me smile. I’m a long-time Hanson-hater. I pray this guy gets what he deserves.
I think he is a political appointee.
They’re called, “payoffs,” and Hansen belongs in J-A-I-L.
And anyone is surprised?
With such egregious rule violations, I’m betting he could be taken down easily if only someone higher up was willing to go through the motions.
He’s another example of a peacock who thinks his celebrity makes him magically untouchable.

Hansen has become an activist for action to mitigate the effects of climate change, which on several occasions has led to his arrest.
Hansen in his 2009 open letter to President Obama advocates a "Moratorium and phase-out of coal plants that do not capture and store CO2". In his first book Storms of My Grandchildren, similarly, Hansen discusses his Declaration of Stewardship the first principle of which requires "a moratorium on coal-fired power plants that do not capture and sequester carbon dioxide".
In 2008 interviews with ABC News, The Guardian, and in a separate op-ed, Hansen has called for putting fossil fuel company executives, including the CEOs of ExxonMobil and Peabody Coal, on trial for "high crimes against humanity and nature", on the grounds that these and other fossil-fuel companies had actively spread doubt and misinformation about global warming, in the same way that tobacco companies tried to hide the link between smoking and cancer.
Physicist Freeman Dyson is critical of Hansen's climate-change activism. "The person who is really responsible for this overestimate of global warming is Jim Hansen. He consistently exaggerates all the dangers... Hansen has turned his science into ideology.”
After Hansen's arrest in West Virginia, New York Times columnist Andrew Revkin wrote: "Dr. Hansen has pushed far beyond the boundaries of the conventional role of scientists, particularly government scientists, in the environmental policy debate."
New York Times climate columnist Christa Marshall asks if Hansen still matters in the ongoing climate debate, noting that he "has irked many longtime supporters with his scathing attacks against President Obama's plan for a cap-and-trade system." "The right wing loves what he's doing," said Joseph Romm, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, a think tank. Hansen said that he had to speak out, since few others could explain the links between politics and the climate models.
Hansen is the man who is deemed the final authority on Al Gore’s constant claim that “the earth has a fever.”
Since escalating the “provocative” (in Dr. Hansen’s word) nature of his advocacy in a 2006 “60 Minutes” interview, these outside activities have become extraordinarily lucrative - yielding on average more than a quarter of a million dollars per year in extra income between 2007 and 2010 from outside sources, all based upon the work he is paid by taxpayers to do for NASA.

Gore promoting fewer children to curb pollution

In an appearance Monday in New York City, former Vice President Al Gore, prominently known for his climate change activism, took on the subject of population size and the role of society in controlling it to reduce pollution.
He offered some ideas about what might be done for females in the name of stabilizing population growth. (h/t Chris Horner via wattsupwiththat.com)
“One of the things we could do about it is to change the technologies, to put out less of this pollution, to stabilize the population, and one of the principle ways of doing that is to empower and educate girls and women,” Gore said. “You have to have ubiquitous availability of fertility management so women can choose how many children have, the spacing of the children.
“You have to lift child survival rates so that parents feel comfortable having small families and most important — you have to educate girls and empower women,” he said. “And that’s the most powerful leveraging factor, and when that happens, then the population begins to stabilize and societies begin to make better choices and more balanced choices.”

TOMORROW: Media Briefing on Air Quality Research Flights
WASHINGTON – EPA will participate in a media teleconference hosted by NASA at 11 a.m. EDT on Thursday, June 23 to preview the upcoming series of aircraft research flights over the Baltimore-Washington traffic corridor to study urban air pollution.
NASA research satellites monitor many air pollution components, but it has been a challenge to use these measurements of the atmosphere from space to detect pollution near the ground. This multi-year airborne field campaign will help improve the capability of satellites to measure near surface-level atmospheric composition. EPA is partnering with NASA and several other organizations on the effort.
The campaign is called DISCOVER-AQ, which stands for Deriving Information on Surface Conditions from Column and Vertically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality. It will use two NASA aircraft to make a series of flights in July to measure gaseous and particulate pollution. Flights will be coordinated with extensive ground observations at various sites in Maryland extending from the Washington Beltway to northeast of Baltimore.
