David Cameron said he was "devastated" to hear of the death of Christopher Shale, his constituency chairman, who was found dead in a portable toilet at Glastonbury Festival.
In a statement, the Prime Minister said Mr Shale was a "close and valued friend" and a "big rock" in his life.
Mr Shale, 56, who was the party chairman in Mr Camerons Witney constituency, was found dead in a toilet in the sites VIP area at 9am.
He was featured in an article in today's Mail on Sunday which published a memo written by Mr Shale saying there was little reason to join the Conservative party.
The festival organiser Michael Eavis spoke of his sadness over the death during a press conference later.
The 75-year-old farmer was told it was suicide - but police said it was still too early to say, while friends of Mr Shale insisted he had had a heart attack.

An EMT told me that many elderly are found dead in bathrooms. That the body slackens before death and many head for the toilet only to die there.
A portable toilet? I prefer my father’s manner of passing. He fell asleep on his own couch and never woke up.
Like my Grandpa, peacefully in his sleep, not screaming like the passengers on his bus.
Didn’t Elvis die on a toilet too?
This guy was only 56. 56 is elderly?
understandable at Glastonbury, being around that many hippies is enough to make anyone kill themselves
True. A la Elvis ... One feels sick and want to relieve ...
We’ve all had poops we thought could lead to a heart attack
I don’t believe 56 is elderly, no.
But there are all kinds of reasons people die. I knew of someone who passed away at age 48, shocking everyone as he hadn’t been ill. It turned out he had an undiagnosed case of colon cancer.
My eldest son and his fiance are at Glastonbury at the moment - hope they don’t come home with fleas.
“An EMT told me that many elderly are found dead in bathrooms.”
Elderly? He was 56.
I believe a more common reason for people to die on the toilet, is due straining.
A sacrifice to the old gods.
Because Cameron is a politician, this has a “don’t get caught with a dead girl or live boy in your bed” feeling about it. Yechh...
Well that’s an ending where one’s life ain’t worth a sheeet.
What exactly is a “Constituency Chairman?”
He was 56, hardly elderly. Also, this was a public toilet. I can’t imagine him doing that...it would be believable if it was at home. I think it was a hit.
“Who does Number Two work for?”
‘That’ being suicide as was mentioned in the article.
Yep, hard as a golf ball, and twice the size. The splash actually got water on the floor.
I would imagine that they’ll do an autopsy. The findings should be coming out in the next two weeks sometime.
I used the example of an EMT commenting about the large number of dead people they kept finding in bathrooms. You don’t have to be elderly to die.
