A Freeport man has been slapped with criminal charges after he tried to upgrade his flight at Kennedy Airport by claiming to be in the U.S. Army, prosecutors said Monday. Rock Diaz, 22, of Frankel Avenue was released on his own recognizance after his arraignment Saturday in Queens Criminal Court, the Queens district attorney's office said. The criminal complaint against Diaz said he was wearing a U.S. Army uniform, a POW patch, an American flag patch and dog tags when he attempted to board a flight to the Dominican Republic.

A U.S. Customs agent asked Diaz if he was in the military, the complaint said, and he responded: "Yes. I'm in the Army." But Diaz could not produce military identification and could not answer questions about his rank, where he was stationed and what his job in the Army was, the complaint said. "The defendant stated, in sum or substance, 'I'm sorry. I'm not in the military. I only did this to get upgraded to first class,'" the complaint said. Diaz was charged with two misdemeanor counts of criminal impersonation. He was due back in court Aug. 4.

I'm asking an honest question to vets with better memories than mine. Say you are in one branch of the military, and earn medals distinct to that branch. If you separate from that branch, and enlist in a different branch, are you allowed to wear the medals you were awarded in your prior branch? I thought the answer was "yes, in certain situations", but cannot remember.

Does anyone know for certain?

I have a friend who was a Marine E4 (I think), activated reservist, during the assault into Kuwait during Desert Storm, earning his Combat Action Ribbon.

When he got home he decided that he wanted to stay in the uniformed services and become an officer, but didn't want to stay in the Marines as such and ended up going into the Coast Guard.

Fresh out of Yorktown as a newly-minted Coastie Ensign, he shows up at his first posting to find a grizzled old CPO licking his chops at an opportunity to break-in a new officer. Said CPO has a "holy-sh*t" moment when seeing my friend's CAR ribbon and asks "Prior service ... Sir?"
