Russian scientists expect humanity to encounter alien civilisations within the next two decades, a top Russian astronomer said on Monday.
"The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms ... Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years," said Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Applied Astronomy Institute, according to the Interfax news agency.
Speaking at an international forum dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life, Finkelstein said 10% of the known planets circling suns in the galaxy resemble Earth.
If water can be found there, then so can life, he said, adding that aliens would most likely resemble humans with two arms, two legs and a head.
"They may have different colour skin, but even we have that," he said.

“It’s important.
It MEANS something. “
You too? I can’t get it out of my head!
I’m not that eager to meet ET. Its not like we don’t have enough problems already. What if ET wants to eat us?
While I think it is likely there is life in some other star system, someone will have to come up with an explanation
as to how something can exceed the speed of light before we can have any contact, baring the SciFi concepts of “worm holes” or “parallel universes”.
As of now, the nearest “possibility” is at least 11 light years away. That is darn far away, even for a beam of light to travel.
Quix is FRs resident UFOlogist. Maybe he can explain.
1. Why in the next 20 years? If the universe is 13.5 billion years old, then we can assume that other advanced races of intelligent beings have evolved (not that I believe in naturalistic evolution) by now.
There is no reason why space aliens would choose to contact us now and not years ago.
The fact that they haven’t is evidence that they don’t exist.
2. On the other hand, they could be like to government of Brazil which as a policy of not contacting previously unknown tribes discovered in the jungle. Better to let the develop on their own.

Perhaps Quix could evaluate the following, taken from the article: “Finkelstein said 10% of the known planets circling suns in the galaxy resemble Earth.”
Hard data, please. And with citations.
“Or any Walmart anywhere:”
I often think “People of Walmart” HAS to be staged.
Can there REALLY be people like that in the USA?
I left in 2004, so maybe it really has become that bad?
Quote from Wak (an alien):
Look, I know I must look weird to you but how do you think you look to me? Listen, I watched four episodes of "Lassie" before I figured out why the little hairy kid never spoke. I mean, he rolled over, sure, he did that fine but, I don't think he deserved a series for that.
If you’re talking about finding primitive life forms on another planet, it could be confirmed within a decade when the Mars probes from the USA (Mars Science Laboratory) and Europe (ExoMars) find chemical evidence of life still existing on Mars as we find microbes beneath the surface of the planet excreting certain gases, especially methane. Once we cross that hurdle, chances are pretty good within 30 years we’ll find life on rocky crust planets orbiting stars within 70 light years of our solar system—especially finding planets with nitrogen, oxygen and water vapor in the atmosphere.

>>I left in 2004, so maybe it really has become that bad?<<
I think you mean “is it still that bad?”
The answer is yes.
No other life in this galaxy, I bet.
This guy Finkelstein is a genius.
He’s discovered a way to get paid to spout off trivial falsehoods.
How can he say 20 years though/ It’s a random guess. It could be 40 years or 400 for that matter

As to any scientist: ¨Publish or perish.¨
I don’t know what they based their estimate on. You’re right, could be next year, could be 400...But I’m confident it will not take longer than say.. 50 years...My guess...
