America just keeps getting fatter
LA Times ^ | 7/7/11 | Melissa Healy

America continues to get fatter, according to a comprehensive new report on the nation's weight crisis. Statistics for 2008-2010 show that 16 states are experiencing steep increases in adult obesity, and none has seen a notable downturn in the last four years.

Meanwhile, cases of Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure that health experts have long warned would result from the nation's broadening girth and sedentary ways are becoming increasingly widespread, according to the report, titled "F as in Fat," released Thursday.

Even Coloradans, long the nation's slimmest citizens, are gaining excess pounds. With an obese population of 19.8% — it is the only state with an adult obesity rate below 20% — Colorado remains the caboose on the nation's huffing, puffing train to fat land.

...

The report, prepared by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Trust for America's Health, is their sixth annual state-by-state accounting of obesity.

In the last 15 years, the report said, adult obesity rates have doubled or nearly doubled in 17 states. Two decades ago, not a single state had an obesity rate above 15%. Now all states do.

"When you look at it year by year, the changes are incremental," said Jeffrey Levi, executive director of the Trust for America's Health. But if you back up a generation and look at the slow but steady climb of Americans' weight, he said, "you see how we got into this problem."

Getting out of it will not be simple, Levi said. The report emphasized the need for a range of measures, including boosting physical activity in schools, encouraging adults to get out and exercise, broadening access to affordable healthy foods and using "pricing strategies" to encourage Americans to make better food choices.

We’re fattening up in preparation for surviving the Obama Administration’s “Final Solution.” All Communist regimes put mass starvation into play at some point.

First step to losing weight; never drink any type of soda —ever. The second step is to stop all juices. Then you cut out junk food and candy.

Few people can take the next step, but it’s doing cardio about 4 or 5 times per week; jogging or jump-rope. The really hard-core types will use weights, but that’s like 3% of the population or less.

Actually being fat and policing food is taking the place of the tobacco tyranny. They can’t push it any more because everyone who is going to quit smoking have quit and if they out law it they will lose tax money.

America is fat a hell no question...especially many women, minorities and lower income

Bring back self respect, responsibility and traditional values and fast America will melt away

People are no longer ashamed about anything

Fat folks were rare 45 years ago..they stood out

I just traveled the West.....fat folks there...same as South

High quality protein is very expensive. A pound of fresh fish is much more expensive than more filling high carb foods, for example. It seems that most animal protein foods are expensive unless they are fatty and or full of salt.

Cheap to eat potatoes,beans,rice.

Fresh fruits and veggies also expensive.

Those could be some of the reasons. I noticed futher down in this thread before responding that someone mentioned school meals because the children are supposedly going without except for what the school provides. I think school meal programs are complete BS.

No—eggs, lean meats (London broil, pork, chicken), cottage cheese, legumes, etc., can all be found for $2/lb or less. Lots of fresh veggies for less than that.

Healthy food doesn’t have to be expensive at all.

I thought it was breakfast (but then I'm a lark)

I think we eat too much for our sedentary lives...

Agreed -- don't eat less than 3 hours before bed and have a good breakfast. Plus of course, eat your greens, fast food is for emergencies not daily consumption and use the stairs or the sidewalks when you can.

I don't follow these most of the time, but try to.

I do not care in the least!

As long as a law abiding person's behavior does not adversely effect another’s personal freedoms then I say let them live and die however they like.

Drink, smoke, eat pie. Or not!

My favorite T-shirt in college said Live Your Life. I wore it till it was a faded mess.

fat is ok, as in a bit overweight. But obese folks have a serious health problem. Overweight folks can still run, play sports, hike etc. and have a reasonable life. But obese folks get diabetes, are at risk for many different health issues.

Coming from a family that has lots of diabetics, I am very conscious that those genes lurk in the OP, so I keep my weight down, way down, and keep those fasting glucose readings below 100, among other precautions.

My doc tells me that he doubts that I will ever be diagnosed with diabetes.

Its better to eat more earlier in the day and less later.

We’re not as active as before.

For various reasons, we have become accustomed to larger portion sizes and accept them as normal. I’m one of the worst offenders. When I look at a “serving” of something, my first thought is “OK, that’s the appetizer, where’s the rest?”
