McConnell proposes giving Obama debt ceiling power
MSNBC ^ | 7/12/2011 | msnbc

The top Republican in the Senate proposed on Tuesday giving President Barack Obama sweeping new power to, in effect, unilaterally increase the nation's debt limit to avoid a first-ever default on U.S. obligations.

The new mechanism would take the place of the current White House debt negotiations among congressional leaders and Obama. Those talks over spending cuts and tax increases have grown increasingly acrimonious.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., offered a new plan to allow the president to demand up to $2.4 trillion in new borrowing authority by the summer of next year in three separate submissions.

Those increases in the so-called debt limit would automatically take effect unless both the Republican-controlled House and the Democratic Senate enact legislation specifically disapproving it.

From the WSJ:

The McConnell plan essence would put in place a procedure that could allow three separate increases in the country's debt ceiling totaling $2.5 trillion through the end of 2012.

But his plan would require a bill to be passed in both the House and Senate in the next two weeks, something that likely faces long odds.

I wonder if some more analysis is needed...does Mitch's plan call for an increase in the debt limit with NO cuts? There is a different dynamic going on now, as opposed to when Clinton was in office. First of all, Clinton was somewhat popular...Hussein is not. Second, Hussein "owns the economy", in the words of his own chair-poodle AND in the minds of voters. He has gotten his stimulus, he got his Deathcare Law, and he got his much-ballyhooed "financial reform". Third, the election was less than a year ago. People aren't ready to demonize Republicans, whom they view as a balance to Hussein.

I think Hussein comes across to Joe Six Pack as an unlikeable snob. None of the Republicans do. Ergo, this really is a problem for the Dear Reader.

I agree, at least to this extent: what McConnell is proposing isn’t something you can deal with by calling him names. That’s the response syndrome the liberals have fallen into because they don’t have any facts from which to argue.

If his is a bad idea, it won’t be because of the quality of the invective aimed at him. Not much thought in this string of posts.

What’s the matter with all of the Republicans? You know in the end they will capitulate to the Dems. Leadership is non-existent in that party.

I just saw Boehner on Fox being interviewed by Bret Bair. Boehner acted like a neutral mediator instead of a leader. Reagan would be ashamed of the lot of them.

I have seen nothing to verify that the sun won't rise on August 3rd should the debt ceiling not be raised.

Media will certainly attempt to spin this as the Republicans are to blame. Let them.

To those not paying attention (or as Obama thinks of them, the little people), if nothing catastrophic indeed occurs, Obama looks like an idiot. If there are consequences, the blame would be placed on the party in power.

This is what gets me. Republicans hold all the cards. Why would they fold on core principles and commit possible political suicide? Is McConnell honestly this easily intimidated?

A cave by the establishment Republicans was inevitable. It should have been a Las Vegas betting line (maybe it was I just haven't heard about it). Next election the RINO’s all need conservative primary opponents.

What he’s doing is very simple. He’s trying to fix it so that the gop can’t be blamed when Obama increases the debt. In other words his opposition to increasing the debt is more based on his fear of us than his own determination to balance the budget.

Standing for principles is an excellent idea in almost every aspect of life.....

Standing for principles when dealing with immoral, unethical, craven psychopathic vermin like Obama, Reid, Pelosi, Schumer, Frank, Durbin will get you run over like a June bug on a Amtrak rail

You play the political games or you lose.

It saddens me to know end that our system has become so corrupt, so craven, so broken that decent honest men and women have no chance of winning by being statesman and presenting principled position

All the GOP has to do, instead of making this whole thing sound difficult, is in the House pass a debt ceiling increase of $1 trillion with $1 trillion in cuts over a 2 year period.

If the Senate Rats or Obama reject it then it's on them, period.

Exactly the sentiments I feel. For all of my voting life, apparently I've been voting for the 'enemy' of this nation.

Totally agree....and can hardly blame him.

Cuts, I mean the deep cuts we need to do are not going to happen as long as the Senate is controlled by the Dims...They have 2/3 of the legs of federal power and this game of chicken will cost the GOP for 2012 when the MSM gets done demonizing them and the long term goal is to control all three branches in 2012 to actual fix these problems

In other words his opposition to increasing the debt is more based on his fear of us than his own determination to balance the budget.

With Reid in control of the Senate can the budget be balanced.....I think not

You play the political games or you lose.

Yup. It takes more than being right to be a successful politician. If being right were all it took, most of our problems would be solved over night. Unfortunately, most people have no idea how government works and are otherwise completely politically ignorant and gullible.

People are sadly, sorely and utterly mistaken if they think the Republicans can just speak the truth and that will be enough. It isn't.

The public will be against raising the debt limit until precisely the moment programs aren't funded and/or entitlement money is even remotely jeopardized. At that point the bulk of what passes for the current American public will raise holy hell that Grandma might not get her check or poor people missed their food stamps - and Obama is positioning himself to blame the whole thing on the Republicans. This is the becoming the centerpiece (along with scare the seniors about the Ryan Medicare plan) of Obama's 2012 re-elect campaign.

We have to make our case in such a way that forces Obama and his minions to blink first and accept significant cuts with no tax increases - and we have to set the stage where if no resolution comes to pass and the government can't pay for all these entitlements that Obama gets the blame.

Maybe you were out the day they taught Reading, in Reading class.

McConnell said he reluctantly offered the unusual proposal because it has become clear the negotiations with Obama are not going anywhere.
The Republican plan would require that Obama submit spending cuts along with his borrowing requests.

Obama, Please put it in WRITING..Thank you Mitch.

Or did you need it in a different language? I know MSNBC can be hard to decipher...?
