The way I understood it, it is illegal for agents of an American corporation to bribe foreign officials. The possible bribery of UK policemen would vioilate that law an therefore make the American corporation liable to prosecution.
The second issue is much weaker with a claim that Murdoch and his son used NewCorp money for their own private purposes and therefore violated SEC requirments for listed companies.
The first is actually real trouble. The second is purely political.
