President Obama on Friday pointed to polls to argue that his proposal of a "balanced approach" on a debt deal - one that includes revenue increases as well as spending cuts - is what the American people want.
"My Republican friends have said that they're not willing to do revenues, and they have repeated that on several occasions," he told reporters at a news conference in Washington. "My hope, though, is that they're listening not just to lobbyists or special interests here in Washington, but they're also listening to the American people. Because it turns out, poll after poll, many done by your organizations, show that it's not just Democrats who think we need to take a balanced approach, it's Republicans as well."
A Gallup poll released Wednesday found that only 20 percent of Americans support a deal that only includes spending cuts, something Republicans have insisted on. Another 30 percent wanted a deal that was "mostly" spending cuts, and 32 percent wanted a deal split equally between spending cuts and tax increases. Eleven percent favored a deal that was mostly or all tax increases.
"The clear majority of Republican voters think that any deficit reduction package should have a balanced approach and should include some revenues," Mr. Obama said. "That's not just Democrats. As the Beltway politicians try to figure out how they will raise the debt ceiling and for how long, most voters oppose including tax hikes in the deal.
Just 34% think a tax hike should be included in any legislation to raise the debt ceiling. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 55% disagree and say it should not. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
There is a huge partisan divide on the question. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Democrats want a tax hike in the deal while 82% of Republicans do not. Among those not affiliated with either major political party, 35% favor a tax hike and 51% are opposed.
Americans who earn more than $75,000 a year are evenly divided as to whether a tax hike should be included in the debt ceiling deal. Those who earn less are opposed to including tax hikes.
Voters remain very concerned about the debt ceiling issue. Sixty-nine percent (69%) believe that it would be bad for the economy if a failure to raise the debt ceiling led to government defaults. Only 6% believe it would be good for theeconomy. Fourteen percent (14%) believe it would have no impact and 11% are notsure. These figures are little changed from a few weeks ago.
At the same time, however, 52% believe it would beeven more dangerous to raise the debt ceiling without making significant cuts in government spending. Thirty-seven percent (37%) take the opposite view and believe a government default would be more dangerous.
Let’s see how much “the American people” back him when *all* wage earners and every person getting an entitlement pays taxes at the current minimum rate of taxation.

The tax code ought to be fixed - that’s for sure. But other than the loopholes taken advantage of such people as the Kennedys Pelosis, and the Kerrys, etc. etc. I don’t think we need to look at additional taxing of those of us who don’t use specially written loopholes.
So I’d support that - like it would ever happen. HA.
The two are NOT the same thing. Tax increases at this point will lead to LESS revenues. Is obastard too stupid to understand that? Maybe. But even if he does, he doesn't care. This is simply a crisis "not to be wasted" in his charge to further implement socialism. Period!

That's my opinion. I base it on my educated hunch, 6 decades of life, of how people react to what is happening now.
When Obama claimed he could not guarantee SS checks, he lost it forever. He became the pessimistic bearer of what to many people is equivalent news of their imminent death. Like a once trusted Doctor who says I have no idea what's going on with you but you are likely to die.
He got EVERYONE'S intense, fully aware, fully committed attention.
He simply can not survive that kind of attention.
Reagan could and did. Reagan was an optimist with obvious faith in his fellow humans.
Obama has now shown himself to be a faithless pessimist. Not the Doctor one can tolerate in this circumstance.
Obama will not make it to the 2012 election.
