Utah U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch blasted President Obama in the weekly GOP address, calling for a balanced budget amendment in exchange for supporting an increase in the debt ceiling.
"Instead of sending that amendment to the states for ratification, and addressing the need for fiscal balance, 14 years later, our nation faces a debt crisis of epic proportions," Mr. Hatch said. "Our national debt has gone from roughly $5 trillion in 1997 to over $14 trillion today."
The Utah Republican, who has repeatedly criticized the Obama administrationâs handling of the debt talks, said congressional Republicans should limit Washington's ability to spending, warning revenue increases are unacceptable.

They need to be laying it on him, day, after, day, from now until November. We don’t have to worry about the economy getting any better, it’s not with Obamajaad at the helm. Our job creators are tired of this commie krap and are on strike until we get rid of the perps. If they don’t get rich, we certainly don’t either. It’s that simple.
But we can’t let up hammering Obamajaad, not for one minute. Loudly!
Orin Hatch is correct. We need to rein in the federal spending and perhaps a constitutional amendment is necessary. However, for now, any agreement to raise the federal debt ceiling has to be accompanied by enforceable, specific spending cuts - not vague -'sometime in the distant future' promises of spending cuts (that future congresses can ignore) and absolutely no 'revenue enhancements' (taxes). End of story.
We ain't got a year until we're done.
The debt ceiling is a defacto balanced budget requirement. Why trade it for possible Democrat agreement on a measure that would require 3/4 of the states to act before it can become effective?
Isn’t it likely that Democrats would lobby against the amendment in every state?
If we don’t raise the debt ceiling the federal government would have to balance its budget right now.
Good one! :)
Headline should read “Hatch running to the right to save seat”...
Hatch sure got religion since Bennett got dumped. I still won’t vote for him come the next primary though; he’ll just revert to his RINO ways after the election.
What's the point?
This is just being used as cover for why they are not doing their jobs. The Republicans in the House should be voting on budget measures every day. If they don't pass, they don't pass, but these "secret" meetings with Obama, who does not have the responsibility for passing a budget, are a joke. We are being destroyed by the weak, effete, Republican elite led by "leaders" like Crybaby Boehner, just as much as Obama and the crazed Democrats.
A BBA guarantees just one thing ... higher taxes for all of us.
It is a TERRIBLE idea. Oh it sounds like it’s something responsible, but it is an admission of terminal irresponsibility and will cost us a FORTUNE.
That’s exactly it. He’s seen the polls and he is in big trouble.
No kidding. I get incessant email blasts from Hatch as he tries to convince me he really wasn't a Teddy Kennedy ass kisser.
The sole purpose of the Republican Party is to serve as an ineffective alternative to the Democrat Party.
A balanced budget ammendment would give the dems the leverage they need to raise taxes every year.
We need a cap on spending in the constitution, not a balanced budget ammendment.
Well check out Orrin showing more skin to conservatives.
He’s got his pant leg pulled up and we can almost see a bit of his creamy calf showing above his black sock. He lookin’ out the side of his eye, one eyebrow raised playfully.
It must be warming up to the primary season.
>> “Isnt it likely that Democrats would lobby against the amendment in every state?” <<
They would love to have a constitutional requirement that forces tax increases, which the BBA would be.
My my my... Hatch is really sounding Conservative these days.
I guess the Tea Party has him very worried — as they should.
What happened to Hatch? Did he maybe get new bifocals and re-discover his gender-parts?
