President Obama Supports Legislation to Repeal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)
ABC News ^ | 07/19/2011 | Jake Tapper

Tomorrow the Senate will hold the first hearing on The Respect for Marriage Act, which repeals the Defense of Marriage Act, thus granting to all lawfully married couples—including same-sex couples—to receive federal marriage benefits and protections if they are joined by a valid marriage in a state where such marriages are legal.

“The president has long called for a legislative repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, which continues to have a real impact on the lives of real people --our families, friends and neighbors,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said at today’s press briefing.

“He is proud to support the Respect for Marriage Act, introduced by Senator Feinstein and Congressman Nadler, which would take DOMA off the books once and for all," said Carney. "This legislation would uphold the principle that the federal government should not deny gay and lesbian couples the same rights and legal protections as straight couples.”

Too bad we can’t repeal the 2008 election.

If Congress doesn’t repeal federal DOMA, the courts will. There is a solid Equal Protection argument to be made by the states who have already recognized gay marriage.

In addition, O favors Planned Death. I have had many discussions with blacks about the beginnings of that organizaion and ask that they do the research. Blacks are not favorable towards abortion either.

How about recognizing Islamic child brides and polygamist marriages like his own daddy had?

Except for the given of leftist error on abortion policy, the field of “gay rights” is this president's special contribution to national self-destuction. worse than Obamacare, worse than shaky foreign policy, even worse than border negligence.

Wouldn’t a repeal require a 2/3 majority, just as repeal of ObamaCare does?

Uh,since when is getting married a “right”? It’s not a right,just like driving is not a right;It’s a privlege.

Since forever. There are some things so fundamental to civilization and so essential to the human condition that they are outside the bounds of the state to forbid. They are God-given rights.

Where is it written in the Constitution that we have the right to get married,or to adopt?

The 9th Amendment was written to address these rights. Something like marriage was such a given at the time of the drafting it would have been superfluous to list.

That being said, homosexuals are not demanding a right to marry which they already have. They currently have the same marriage rights that all have had in the West for millenia - to marry one person of the opposite sex.

What the homosexuals are asking for is a special "right" that no one currently has. That being the specific "right" to marry someone they are sexually attracted to. No one has ever had that right, nor should it ever be codified as a "right".

If Michelle was his very first girlfriend, and it’s a marriage of convenience/cover, where did their daughters come from?

Or, did he grit his teeth and do the deed so they could pretend to have a happy family????

Or, hate to go there, but could the president be “bi-sexual”?????

"Serious question: Why didn’t the Democommies try to pass legislation like this when they held both houses of Congress?"

Lib's don't want to cut entitlements. But they know that they can add cuts to entitlements to tax increases and some of the conservatives are going to salivate at it. And they know it creates the perceptions with the voters that Conservatives are all about cutting entitlements for the poor and are all for the rich.

Conservatives need to forget about cutting entitlements cause that is going to hurt them politically and focus on getting the overall spending down. When Republicans do tackle entitlements it ought to be focused on stopping and preventing fraud, not arbitrary cuts. They need to kill Obamacare. They need to work with that guy who ran the sting on the medicaid office and help him find fraud in the programs, since they don't seem to be able to do it.

My question was concerning a DOMA repeal. The Dems are pushing it now. Why didn’t they try this when they held both congressional chambers by decent margins and the Presidency?

Oh Nevermind...

That is a good question. Obama's support of gay causes was well known. I wonder if there was some kind of strategy and this was just further down the list. Such as get several northeast states to legalize gay marriage first, before attacking it on the national level.
