A 5-year-old girl was flown to the hospital after she was attacked by a shark Tuesday, according to Hyde County Emergency Services.

Shortly after 5 p.m., emergency crews were called to Ramp 72 on Ocracoke Island for the reported shark bite, a news release said. Bystanders described what appeared to be a shark attacking the girl in the South Point area.

Water’s a little warmer, island’s a little wider. More stuff to do there. The Food Lion is why we’re staying at Kinnakeet Shores in Avon, too, lol. Don’t want to have to drive 20 miles as you say, pretty as the drive might be. Don’t want to pay island prices at the little local stores, either. Gas is bad enough out there.

I saw the story on news 14 Carolina in the doctors office. They had not yet had an update. Thanks. It sure wasn’t a jelly fish and God knows that s painful enough if you don’t have vinegar or urine handy. Had to be a shark. Ongoing fishing tourneys up and down the coast are all reporting them 25 miles out. I wonder why the sharks ad Dolphins are feeding so close. The heat? El Nino Beano Dino? <——making fun of the name.

Masonboro sound figure 8 bchs and the very northend Carolina bch are peaceful. Kure is not bad. I have never been to atlantic bch or morehead; Are they myrtle beachish or nice?

Yeah at the northnorth end carolina bch is an inlet that to a tourist looks calm. It is treacherous. I so love the tides in the Mboro sound it is like a mini hot tub of pure sand like a poll.Jelly fish is the only bummer.

Might be warm water from the Gulf Stream, IDK.

July 4th weekend we went to the beach on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday we went to the Navy base at Dam Neck in VaBeach. Water was warm there. On Sunday we got up early and drove to Rodanthe, north of Cape Hatteras because I wanted to go 4-wheeling in the sand. Water was cold there. Significantly colder. But that is north of where the Gulf Stream goes out to sea. The other thing surprising this year is the lack of jellyfish in the Chesapeake Bay. Usually by this time of year we can’t even go tubing in the bay because of the jellies, and last weekend didn’t see a single one. We were diving off the boat and swimming in deep water.

The Dam Neck beach is great. South of the VaBeach oceanfront, no crowds, no paying for parking, no tourists, parking just across the dunes, and you can have beer (in cans) on the beach. And because it’s on the base, you can go in the water without worrying that some scumbag will steal your stuff from your beach towel.

The 4-wheeling trip was somewhat of a trip down “memory lane.” My parents had a beach buggy when I was a kid, and we spent many Saturdays riding up and down the beach, and surf-casting. First place I ever drove by myself (not sitting on my Dad’s lap) was on the beach at age 12 in that 1945 Dodge army truck.

That last link was last June. I remember a few shark attacks last summer as well.

“just about the time the dinner bell starts ringing for sharks...maybe a bit early,”

4:00pm-10:00am is stay out of the water time on the NC coast.

Some comments about this incident from a fishing website for the SOBX about 30 miles south of Ocracoke:

“Let us know how the sharks are doing! Seriously, next couple of months prime time for the big boys”

“I can tell you right now the sharks are doing great. Just got back today, and yesterday saw a 6’+ landed at the jetty and saw another one 4 minutes later on the other side, all in knee deep water.”

“Saw one at least 6ft long swimming in shallow water near the jetty Saturday. Have seen the most this year I’ve ever seen and they are coming mighty close to shore and huge at that...... “

“All true...
Rode out of Ophelia a couple years ago and the sharks were stacked along the bottom like cord wood. I have also seen 10 footers in knee to waist deep water.

The island that appears on cape lookout shoals is also known as shark island.”

“back the first part of June, i was sitting on the beach and saw a shark swim right up into knee deep water, amongst the swimmers, just bait in the water......just keep in mind if you need help, its at least an hour away.......just saying”

Atlantic Beach isn’t too bad, and from there you can 4WD north along the surf into really rugged wilderness in the Point Lookout park beaches. I’ve never spent any time in Moorehead but it looks like a pretty developed beach-lots of houses right on the dune line, some multi-story condo units and a fast food and shopping strip in the middle of it all.

How long have I loved the beach? Here's a picture of me with my Mom and that Dodge truck, circa 1961.

Back in ‘07 I was kayaking in shallow (hip deep) water in the sound behind the south point of Ocracoke when a 3’ sand shark hit the boat hard from below. He sheared off into the inlet and I never saw him again. It was about 1600 hours. I often wondered if it was a chance bump or if that shark was really attempting to attack. One way or the other I’m glad I had a nice sturdy kayak wrapped around me at the time. A 3’ Sand Tiger could take a hunk out of your leg the size of a filet mignon.

Jellies are bad everywhere this year. It’s been too dry and the estuaries are saltier than ususl, which is good for the young jellies. If I actually get to the shore this year (I’m dealing with a lot of Obama in my life right now, so who knows) I’ll forgo wading in the sounds.
