Support shifts as Boehner adds balanced-budget amendment

House Republicans will link passage of a balanced-budget amendment to Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) last-ditch debt-ceiling plan, which GOP lawmakers said would move the measure to passage in a high-stakes vote later on Friday.

Republican lawmakers voiced confidence the enhanced bill would pass muster with conservatives, as Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) predicted the balanced-budget amendment change would bring 10 to 20 more GOP members on board.

Harry Reid will have to take up the bill and the Senate will have to pass it, but not unchanged. The House will probably pass the re-revised Boehner plan today. Then the Senate takes it up, strips out the BBA provision and passes the revised version. The House accepts the change and passes the final bill overwhelmingly with 90% of all Republicans and 60% of Dems voting for it. Everyone saves face and the game goes on, until we lose our AAA rating, our borrowing costs soar and the game shuts down for good.

If the House were to pass this “Boehner” bill, what’s to keep Reid and Senate dems from gutting it, passing it, and then punting it back to the House right before August 2nd, saying ok we’ve passed the Boehner bill with some minor changes, now in the spirit of compromise, if the House doesn’t hurry up and pass it, it will be the House and GOP’s fault that we go into default? Isn’t this what Rush was essentially saying yesterday?

Oh brother, please stop trying to pin the blame on Hussein. He's merely another in a long line of puppets beholden to Wall St/London banks. He does what he's told - that was the deal for accepting the nomination.

And, as far as attempting to 'save the Republic', you should give that one a rest as well. There are only a few possible outcomes, none of them pleasant, at this juncture:

Hussein (banks) rules by decree;
Congress impeaches;
The joint chiefs finally act;
States secede, civil war ensues

Once a democratic republic gets this far down the path to ruin, it never recovers until a complete reset is initiated.

This is good.

Get the RATs on record as being against a Balanced Budget Amendment, and then have every GOP member in the country hammer them over it.

It only works if every GOP member is on the same page and they blast the RATs relentlessly, but it CAN work. Do we have the spine to do it?

Want to lock spending in at 19 or 18 % of GDP when it should never have exceeded 10%?

Just a thought.

“All a balanced budget amendment does is makes you have a balanced plan. But that plan can include as much borrowing as you like. And that plan can include overly rosy projections on everything.”

Apparently many people don’t realize that. It gives certain republicans a great opportunity for political posturing, though, doesn’t it?

You have to hit the ball into the other court and the opponent bears responsibility for what they do with it. At least this one has some good top-spin.

To carry your analogy further, what happens if you hit it right in the center of your opponent's service court and your opponent and the official both yell "OUT" without even trying to return it?

Well there you go. Even more reason the rubber-spined Blue Blood GOP Ruling Class should acquiesce to the Democrats. Dear Lord...the STATES WILL SECEDE! CIVIL WAR WILL ENSUE!!!

On a FreeRepublic thread, who knew?

In CCB, spending is capped to avoid the simple politician’s move to raise taxes. In CCB, if no agreement is reached to balance, automatic across-the-board cuts take place to reach balance. <<<<

It’s very hard to wave goodbye to the CC&B, and agonizing that we let Reid’s rejection of it cause us to also leave it in the can. How long can they all pound the sand?

I still believe this will fail in the Senate.

Anything they send will fail, that's the point.

Americans are watching this. They are focussed on this. PATRIOTS know the truth, and we will fight like hell for the truth. Besides that, we have an ace up our sleeve which, believe me, the left does not see coming. And it IS coming.

uh oh, Rush is saying, “Hold On.” and of course the amendment is only proposed, plus there is no specific language for an amendment ruling out tax increases to balance the budget. Looking like a set-up again, per Rush.

A Balance Budget Amendment would be a disaster.

If you think things are bad now, just wait until we have a BBA and Obama makes the choice out to be one between starving Granny and making the "rich" pay their "fair" share.

Cantor Says This Time, House GOP Leaders Have the Votes
by Corey Boles
Add a Comment

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R., Va.) said Friday that the leadership now has enough votes to win passage of House Speaker John Boehner’s bill to cut spending and lift the federal debt ceiling. Mr. Boehner was forced to delay a vote planned for last night after conservatives in his caucus balked at supporting the measure, and demanded revisions including the addition of stronger language tying increasing the borrowing limit to passage of a balanced budget amendment.

The amendment drafted with CCB specified that only supermajorities could raise taxes to bridge a deficit, but that cuts would happen automatically in the event of imbalance.

Add a freeze while you’re at it. Make the Feds get by on next year what they got by on this year. We’re all getting by on the same or less. Not employing the baseline raises due would allow the CBO to report that Cong. cut the budget $ 9 Trillion over the next ten years. Do you think that would help the credit ratings? This freeze does not apply to Soc. Sec., Medicare, or Veterans Payments.
