ABC News has learned that Republicans and the White House have struck a tenative deal to raise the debt ceiling before the Aug. 2 deadline.

It's not done yet, but here is the framework of the tentative deal they have worked out, according to a source familiar with the negotiations:

CUTS???? WHAT CUTS??? A non increase is most certainly NOT a cut!
I’m thinking a lot of you folks are delusional.
///
i agree with you.
please check the links in posts 77 and 117.

people have been tricked by the Dems making the current budget the new baseline.

Obama raised spending by 40 percent. then people are happen if they get a 5 percent cut ?!?

Obama raised the debt by more in 2 years, than Clinton or Bush did in 8. and we GAVE him another 2.8 TRILLION ?!?
we raised the National Debt by another 9+ TRILLION,
in the next 10 years.
...but we should be happy because of no tax increase?!?

don’t you think they could have gotten not just a vote on the BBA but guaranteed passage? I think they could have gotten CCB passed if they held firm another day or two.

I think this is a pretty solid win for the GOP.

It is. They wanted two TRILLION plus more dollars to squander, and they're going to get it.

Even if BBA goes down in flames = there was an actual VOTE and it’s an issue for the next election.

I've read quotes of anywhere between 65 and 85% of Americans are for a Balanced Budget Amendment.

The constant 24/7 mantra in 2012 is:

The democrats first tabled then voted against the Balanced Budget Amendment in 2011!

Perhaps the BEST part of the deal...Obama CAVED bigtime and the left is going to be livid with him. This deal weakens Obama significantly. Just go to DU...there is hardly one positive comment about Hussein among the left-wing crowd tonite.

It looks like a pretty big win if this turns out to be true.

I guess it really depends on what your expectations are. For those looking for serious, real cuts now, they will likely be disappointed. For those that never expected any major cuts as long as Hussein is in office, but are satisfied with reframing the debate, getting a BBA vote, a deal with no new taxes, another opportunity to bang away at deficits and debt in a few months, etc, it seems like it could be a decent deal. The left will be FURIOUS which would make it all the more enjoyable.

Still, the WH is disputing this so it may not be true.

I certainly don’t disagree with your statements and analysis. In fact, you did a nice job of articuation! I clearly understand the distinction between the “deal” and the “solution”. This might be an ok “deal” in that it is a first step towards turning around our March to Socialism. I would like to see more details though. However, it is not the “solution” that is ultimately going to solve our debt problem.

‘So what happens if there is a vote and the Senate rejects it? Do the RATs still get their spending increase?’

Yes. All that is guaranteed is the vote on the Amendment, and the political issue when (if) the Dems defeat it.

This IS an absolute disaster but one that pretty obvious in coming. Boehner has been open that he was willing to cut a deal that most of his caucus would oppose and that is probably what we have. The cuts are tiny reductions in the rate at which government spending grows. Obama gets trillions more to play with. The leverage the Republicans had over Obama with the debt ceiling issue will be gone at least for the next couple of years. The BBA vote was going to happen anyway. Boehner can call a vote on that at any time and Senate Republicans were going to tack it onto legislation in that chamber anyway. The commission recommendations will be like every other deficit commission in history — utter nonsense. The automatic cuts sound nice, but even if there are no gimmicks the amount of cuts is a drop in the bucket. This will pass, we'll lose our AAA bond rating and everyone will hate both parties. Sounds like my kids just got rooked by a bunch of RINOs and emperor Barack the first.

It’s stupid and damaging to cut spending in very government program? LOL Okay, sure, we’re going to have to disagree there.

Anyway I’m not going to debate specific provisions until we have the actual bill and language. I’m having a hard time believing the Democrats are guaranteeing cuts or else they’ll okay cutting off grandma and grandpa at the holidays. Not that it will happen but that’s what republicans are accused of when they want to cut entitlements.

I could not disagree more. If we went into default, the GOP was done.

Now the economy is still on Hussein’s shoulders and can’t be blamed on the GOP. If we can’t beat Hussein now with as bad as this country is, then we don’t deserve it.

Of course, that may require some of you to hold your nose and vote for Romney if he’s the candidate...will you do it? That’s the bigger question.

They agreed to extend the debt ceiling past the 2012 elections, agreed to some stupid committee making decisions, or across the board cuts, which are stupid, see my earlier post a few posts back.

Nobody agreed to actually pass a balanced budget amendment.

Nobody agreed to “no new taxes”, only not right this minute.

This is all just to save face, the only thing the Dems wanted, is a large increase in the debt ceiling and they got it. None of the other stuff is real.

I agree Elendur, and this is not a win for the Republicans no matter how they try and paint the picture. And it’s certainly a loose for the people. These cuts are “nothing” for the size of the overall debt. To even imagine 12 men in a room are going to agree to cuts for the good of the public? Not going to happen...they are all open for blackmail of the worst kind for what they might determine.

Worse is Obama....I said he’d put on his hero cap and come into this, he’s holding his Ace’s and will use them...come out smelling like a rose. I hate him.

The GOP position was to raise the debt limit. You and I might not like it, but it can’t be considered a defeat of the GOP position.

You can cut the bloated federal payroll and cut salaries, perks and bennies immediately. You can stop subsidizing and giving away money immediately. You can repeal and abolish ObamaCare immediately without hurting anyone. You can shutter and close entire departments and we’d never miss them. You can quit supporting every damned liberal/communist cause that comes down the pike, including public broadcasting, acorn, seiu, planned parenthood, the UN, etc. You can quit spending our money on illegal aliens! You can declare victory and bring our troops home. You can cancel the damned shovel ready projects and bridges to nowhere! You can stop the asinine bullet trains. You can knock off the endless studies. You can stop the damned federal wars against industry, energy, capitalism and the formerly free American people!

I think this is brilliant. It means Obama “owns” the economy and likely will lose in 2012. If the GOP let this country go into default (and you can bet your bottom dollar the press and everyone else would have blamed the GOP), then Obama would win in 2012 because he would claim the economy mess was a result of default. It would also mean losing the House in 2012.

Sometimes you guys need to take small victories in the pursuit of the large victory. This probably assures Obama is out in 2012.

NO INCREASES IN TAXES and Dollar per Dollar cut. Exactly!!! However, it is not the “solution” that is ultimately going to solve our debt problem.

I don't think any serious person ever said it would be.

Pragmatists (not idealists) know that we are going to have to have much more power to really solve the debt problem. Having the House only is not enough.

However, to BLOCK Dems from implementing tactics which they've used for decades to grow Gov't so fast is a very significant move in the right direction IMO.

On top of that, this deal weakens Obama considerably which is a very large win...that moves us well along the path to achieving those significant gains we need in election '12.

What year (or century) do these matching cuts occur?
What part of the government gets cut, specifically?
What happens if the Republicans don’t agree with the Democrats on what is considered a “valid cut”?

Until these cuts are made explicit, THEY HAVE TRICKED US AGAIN.

This is hardly a win.

1 trillion in budget cuts over 10 years.

1.8 trillion more, decided by committee, or automatic across the board cuts IF the committee can’t come up with them. Over 10 years. We spent $3.7 TRILLION this year. If we save $2.8 trillion over the next 10 years, we’ll actually just INCREASE spending 6% less over that period of time than we would otherwise — and that assumes NO growth in the size of government! Actually, since the Fed Gov’t grows 8-10% a year, saving $2.8 Trillion over 10 years is a JOKE.

A Balanced Budget Amendment VOTE. But they DO NOT specify the LANGUAGE of the BBA. HOW would we arrive at the Balanced budget? COuld they increase taxes to achieve balance? Would spending be capped so that the Feds would be restricted from going over a certain amount of GDP? WOuld they be required to balance by spending cuts ALONE? Would THEY get to decide - or would We The People?

And speaking of caps — where does this compromise CAP the amount Washington can spend relative to GDP? Anywhere? The “Cut,Cap & Balance” capped it at 19.9% GDP. If there is no cap, then the politicians can still spend all they want with no restraint, no “governance,” no limit. And they know it.

This is all a charade — to get ALL of them thru the next election. From Obama to the Dems to the RINO’s in the House. And they’ll ALL blame the Tea Party Conservatives for being “obstructionists.” It’s a win/win for Washington. And a lose/lose for us.
