Wild boars invade New York state; kill pets, chase people

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wild boar are invading the farms of central New York state, attacking livestock, killing family pets, chasing people and posing "devastating consequences" for the area, federal officials warn.

The feral swine are a non-native species suspected of escaping from game farms, and as many as a couple of hundred are roaming the state, said Paul Curtis, a natural resources professor at Cornell University.

While an exact picture of the wild boar population in New York State is unclear, a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture said the swine were successfully breeding in the three counties and producing litters averaging 4 to 6 piglets.

and as many as a couple of hundred are roaming the state,

A couple of hundred? They think there are only a couple of hundred and they are causing this much trouble? I think they better count again. CA has many, many wild hogs, they are a mix between imported Russian boar and domestic hogs released back in the day when hog farming went bad in the coastal areas. They multiply like rabbits.

Except for Monterey county the limit for wild hogs on the coast of CA is one a day and one in possession. Enough people hunt them to keep them down to a manageable level.

This is what NY needs to do, open season on the suckers and they will soon learn to stay away from humans.

BTW, the reason the season is different in Monterey county is because the hogs there have more of the Russian boar in them then other parts of the state. They get huge and have those wicked looking tusks.

Are you saying only the young ones are good to eat?

On T.V. they showed hunters in Alabama taking them to some processing plant.

Do you hunt them?

HUH?? Some BBQ sauce and a Hunting License, problem solved.

While we're on the subject ..... Some Cuban guy in Miami invented this thing: "La Caja China" (The Chinese Box).

I've seen one in action and it will cook a 64 pound whole hog in 3 hours and 40 minutes with a few bags of charcoal. They are very popular in Miami.

BBQ with Bobby Flay Featuring La Caja China on the Food Network

Instructions: Roasting a Whole Pork

Where there are wild boars, you have wild coyotes and they love those babies, so in most places the population is stable. There are a few hundred in the smoky mountains, they have been there all my life. I have hunted the pigs range and I have never seen a live one.

You shoot the males, you barbecue the females. That is why mr farmer castrates baby pigs. Now if you find a castrated wild hog you can eat him as well. Otherwise if you are hungry, well your ancestors did not bitch about the taste.

Ate wild boar in a restaurant in Neuchatel, Switzerland. Wonderful. Dark meat, rich in flavor.

Perhaps someone was truffle hunting, and their wild boars got off the leash.

No it is not a nation problem, it is national hype. Most of the so called wild pigs are wild pot bellies, where idiots were buying them for pets a few years back, they got tired of them and turned them loose.

Some of the pig hunters I’ve seen on TV are using pit bulls with a tusk-proof vest so they can grab the hog and hold it until the guy gets there and stabs the critter with a big knife.
Here’s a video from Australia - they have the same problem and a helicopter comes in handy. Good soundtrack, too.
