We don't do water cannon, we rely on consent ( Theresa May, Home Secretary UK)

Vigilantes were forced onto the streets last night to protect their homes and businesses after police failed to materialise at many of the scenes of looting and violence which swept across London.

As officers lost control of the streets locals were forced to take the law into their own hands, arming themselves with sticks and chasing looters away from their properties.

In Dalston and Hackney, north-east London, Turkish shopkeepers and their families fought back against looting youths, before spending the night standing shoulder-to-shoulder in an attempt to deter further attacks. One man said: 'This is Turkish Kurdish area. They come to our shops and we fight them with sticks.' Despite increasing calls for the police to get tough with the rioters, Home Secretary Theresa May today sparked anger as she appeared to dismiss the notions that water cannons and even the Army could be used to ensure violent scenes are not repeated tonight.

As police were slammed for appearing to let looters run riot under their noses, Mrs May instead advocated a more softly-softly approach.

She said: 'The way we police in Britain is not through use of water cannon. The way we police in Britain is through consent of communities.'

So please explain how it is that Turkish shopkeepers have to pay for the ALLEGED misbehavior (and that’s all it is, you know, ALLEGED... or do you in your infinite sh*t-head wisdom believe all police are guilty as charged the INSTANT they are charged?) of a few cops?

And don’t address your answer to me, sh*t-head. Address it to the Turkish shopkeepers who are out on the streets defending their lives, their families and their properties.

(I’m specifically mentioning the Turkish shop-keepers because I’m 1000% sure that a sh*t-head like yourself wouldn’t give a f* about ethnic British [they are all inherently evil to you, I’m sure], so I’m trying to find some common ground in that stinking turd-filled brain of yours.)

The Government 'thugs' killed a known criminal.

Rioters need to be shot down.

And since the cops are the flash point for the rioting anyway, maybe they should stay off the street.

Memo to police: in yldstrk’s universe, never go out on the street. just stay at the station and have donuts delivered during your entire shift.

No reason for cops to gun people down during a chase, esp if the person is just trying to get away. So the cops were wrong to gun down the criminal in the public street and should have simply arrested him at a different time, when they could cuff him and put him in a paddy wagon as opposed to summary execution.

Memo to murders: in yldstrk’s universe, just run away whenever you see police and you will never be arrested. you will be free to kill as many people as you want, just as long as you run away from the police.

This riot is actually in response to police brutality let’s not forget. Yeah the riot is bad, but the government thugs get the blame for instigating it.

In yldstrk’s universe, it is never the rioters’ fault. It is always the fault of the government and their evil minions.

yldstrk should go back to DUmmieland.

You can’t just identify someone as a criminal and then gun them down.

Notice and opportunity to be heard, right to confront the witnesses against you, right to trial......

I cannot believe some of what I am reading here.

You want government to gun down whoever it identifies as criminals without a trial? Would that make you feel safe in your bed at night?

THINK , people THINK

what like in Syria?

Yeah, it’s a horrible situation. Arrests for criminal destruction of property, robbery, assault, OK but not armed government action against your own people.......

but you are actually recommending the British government shooting them down in the street?

How is that different than what happened in Iran

Yeah, everyone wants it to wind down

But this is a very sticky wicket

Police Brutality ....

A solitary act (if I believe your construct as stated) allows hundreds if not thousands of others to do as they damned well please, victimizing God knows how many others to manifest their “anger”??

Did I read this on Free Republic or DU, am I on the right site????

They are rioting CAUSED BY police gunning down someone the police were chasing. The police abused their power and authority by summarily executing without a trial someone they wanted to arrest

“Caused by” does not equal permission to or imply legality to the riot

Government is its own worst enemy when it doesn’t follow its own rules or recognize its legitimacy is predicated upon CONSENT FROM THE GOVERNED

Did y’all have a civics class in school? Or maybe the schools weren’t teaching it any more. I know you have to old like I am to have received certain classes in school, but I am stunned by people’s comments.

Do we really want Ohio State all over again? I don’t understand why the commenters here don’t understand the difference between a representative form of government, like in England and here and a dictatorship like in Syria and Iran

I read there was an exchange of fire between the cops and the man in the car. Did you read something different?

As much as I disagree w/you on your comments - I think I understand what you are saying. It is a precarious balance between civil order & martial law.

However - the police didnt just shoot someone for running away. Remember, this is England we are talking about. The “normal beat” cops dont carry guns. They dont even keep them in their cars. They have to acquire them through procedure. (Special response/SWAT teams are always armed.)
So its not like the cops just shot him in cold blood b/c of the way he was dressed or his mannerisms or whatever. They felt justified in firing for whatever reason.
(My boss is a Brit & we have discussed this situation many times over the last couple of days.)

Add to that - these riots are NOT an outcry for justice on the part of the guy that got shot. If that were the case, it would be localised to the neighborhood that the guy came from & it would involve mass demonstration & protest, NOT LOOTING.
The people that these animals (and yes, should be shot) are stealing from having NOTHING to do w/the police involved shooting. These animals are using this shooting (although no one buys it now) as an excuse to rob/steal/assault/destroy. Feral animals should be put down.

If it makes you feel better - I will agree w/you that the police should basically stay out of it. Right after they give the shopowners & a select group of responsible locals the firepower to rid their commmunity of the vermin it is currently infested with.

What is needed in these situations is a whiff of grapeshot. We have become so squeamish as a society that we are prepared to see people killed, hundreds injured (including many police) and tens of millions in property damage, for fear that a couple of thugs may get killed. Early, decisive response is what ends this type of situation before it spirals out of control.

Bringing this thread back to reality, here's the gentleman whose death you are so upset about.

Mark Duggan is reported as being the leader of a gang of crack dealers tied to the Jamaican "Yardies" gangs. Read the article. The world is better off without him.
