Speaker Boehner Announces Appointments to Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction

Washington (Aug 10)

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today announced his intent to appoint the following three lawmakers to represent House Republicans on the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction:

House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX)

House Ways & Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI)

House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI)

Speaker Boehner has tapped Chairman Hensarling to serve as a co-chair of the joint select committee. Boehner issued the following statement regarding the appointments of Chairmen Hensarling, Camp, and Upton:

“Our debt and deficits are a threat to our economy, and America cannot achieve long-term job growth until we take action to address this crisis. In the weeks ahead, a serious, bipartisan committee of lawmakers will begin the hard but necessary work of making the tough choices needed to rein in mandatory and entitlement spending, which are the drivers of our debt. The lawmakers I have appointed to serve on this joint committee are proven leaders who have earned the trust and confidence of their colleagues and constituents. They understand the gravity of our debt crisis and I appreciate their willingness to serve on this panel.

“The two parties have fundamental differences about government and its proper role in our society. Where we've been able to agree, we have acted, and in a way consistent with the American people’s desire for a smaller, less costly, and more accountable government. Still, the differences remain, and so does the urgent work of returning our economy to creating jobs and lifting the crushing burden of debt that threatens our children’s future. This joint committee presents an opportunity for both parties to bring to the table their best ideas, debate them on the merits, and ultimately come together to do what’s best for our country. With all that’s at stake, I expect that the joint select committee will conduct its work in the open and transparent manner the American people deserve.”

You know the bias when you read their bios. You have no idea of what is motivating the statements posted. It is seriously foolish to let nameless faceless posters on the ‘net tell you what to think about anything or anyone.

Unconstitutional?? To make recommendations?? (which they will fail at by design)

When you use that word all the time it loses meaning, like the old story of :'The boy that cried unconstitutional"

I agree with you. While it may be a bad idea to have this committee (and I think it is), it's not unconstitutional. The House has the constitutional right to make its own rules, and that's what they've done.

Nevertheless, when people speak of this committee as being unconstitutional, I think they do have a point... if it's not outright unconstitutional, it does undermine the constitution.

So in the sense that congressmen have taken an oath to uphold and defend the constitution, it does legitimately raise some eyebrows when they pass rules of procedure that serve to undermine it, even though those rules do not directly violate the constitution.

And even if the rules don't violate the constitution, I think you can argue, convincingly, that it is a violation of their oath to vote for rules of procedure that have the practical effect of limiting the representation in the House of 99.5% of the country's population.

FULL TEXT: Paul Ryan Releases Statement Praising Boehner’s Super Committee Picks, Says He Asked to Not Be Considered
,br>In anticipation of the House selections for its GOP super committee members, many people expected Rep. Paul Ryan’s name to be on the list of three. However, Wednesday’s big reveal showed Reps. Hensarling, Upton and Camp as Speaker Boehner’s picks. Ryan recently released the following statement, in which he says he asked the Speaker to not consider him for inclusion on the committee.

“The Speaker has chosen three excellent Republican members to serve on this Joint Committee in Chairmen Hensarling, Upton and Camp. I asked the Speaker not to consider me for the Joint Committee, because only the Budget Committee can write legislation to reform the budget process. As Budget Committee chairman, my plan has long been to work on this critical issue throughout the fall. This past year has shown that the federal budget process is more broken than ever and needs to be reformed. If we are truly going to put the country’s fiscal house in order, it will not be enough to temporarily reduce what Washington spends. We must permanently reform the process by which working Americans’ hard-earned tax dollars are spent.

“The House Budget Committee plans to complement the Joint Committee’s work this fall by holding hearings and marking up legislation to put in place common-sense controls that stop the spending spree in Washington. As things stand, the budget process is stacked in favor of those who want to chase ever-higher spending with ever-higher taxes. In addition to cutting spending by $6.2 trillion in The Path to Prosperity, the Budget Committee will take action to reform our broken budget process in order to bring spending, deficits and debt under control.”

There was a rumor that if you voted against the bill you couldn't server on the committee so that would take several "TeaParty" types out of the running.

Well....if the rumor is true, that would be one reason why Ryan bowed out.

But what's been picked means this unconstitutional "super" committee is full of dem/lib/prog/pops and rinos.

Geeee...can we all guess what these misfits and fiscally irresponsible clowns are gonna come up with???

The difference between this committee and any other committees, is if they don’t come to an agreement, DEFENSE GETS CUT AUTOMATICALLY AND MEDICARE GETS CUT AUTOMATICALLY. Does this sound Constitutional to you?

RE :”So in the sense that congressmen have taken an oath to uphold and defend the constitution, it does legitimately raise some eyebrows when they pass rules of procedure that serve to undermine it, even though those rules do not directly violate the constitution. And even if the rules don't violate the constitution, I think you can argue, convincingly, that it is a violation of their oath to vote for rules of procedure that have the practical effect of limiting the representation in the House of 99.5% of the country's population.

Glad you brought that up. I don't see it that way at all. Neither the he debt limit bill nor the committee can tell either House what they can or cannot do, or vote on. Nothing stops the House from ignoring the recommendations, or even amending and passing them amended.

So what does the bill do? Its imposes spending cuts, delayed cuts based on conditions. So in reality all of the representatives :Ryan, Pelosi, etc that voted for this bill voted for those delayed conditioned spending cuts, although they wont spin it that way. Furthermore, a new bill can always be passed into law that even removes the trigger cuts.

The bill is cowardly and dishonest, but not unconstitutional. TARP was way more unconstitutional than this.

“Hensarling’s sadly underperformed his position in the House leadership IMO. (He was the good old boy they named instead of Bachmann, who actually knows how to get a message out.)”

I remember it well. I also note that Hensarling seems to be Boehner’s little caboose in the same way that Graham is to McCain. The dismissal of Bachmann with that appointment told me all I needed to know about how things were going to go for the 2010 House of Representatives.

Boner is a traitor and an opponent of the Tea Party Faction. So is McConnell.

I don't know when people will come to the realization that Crybaby is just as much the enemy as any Democrat. All the effort that conservatives can muster should be directed towards defeating him. If I had the choice, I would vote for a Democrat over Crybaby. We can afford one less Republican in the House. We cannot afford the "leadership" of the weak, effete, republican elite Crybaby.

Boner and McConnell are NOT the people you would want by your side in a firefight in the trenches. They would be willing to surrender give you up to the enemy if it saved their skins.
