Ryan Asked Boehner to Pass Him Over for Appointment to Super Debt Committee
Fox News ^ | August 10, 2011 | Fox News

Posted on 08/11/2011 11:55:11 AM PDT by americanophile

House Speaker John Boehner's decision not to appoint the Republican Party's financial wizard, Rep. Paul Ryan, to a 12-member super committee tasked with finding more than $1 trillion in savings came as a surprise to almost everyone but Ryan, who said he asked not to be a member of the panel despite earlier indications that he would serve if asked.

Several Republicans had rooted for Ryan to be part of the 12-member panel.

"I definitely would have Chairman Paul Ryan, just because he lives and breathes these numbers, he knows them inside and out. He understands what needs to be done," Rep. Michael Grimm, R-N.Y., told CNBC before Boehner's announcement. "I think Paul Ryan definitely has to be at that."

Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, said Wednesday that he asked Boehner not to consider him because of his plan to overhaul the budget process this fall. Aides to Boehner confirmed that to Fox News.

"This past year has shown that the federal budget process is more broken than ever and needs to be reformed," the Wisconsin congressman said in a written statement, showering praise on the three Republicans that Boehner chose -- Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas and Reps. Dave Camp and Fred Upton, both of Michigan.

"If we are truly going to put the country's fiscal house in order, it will not be enough to temporarily reduce what Washington spends," he said. "We must permanently reform the process by which working American’s hard-earned tax dollars are spent"

Good. His talent would be wasted on this useless commission. As usual, amidst all the BS, Ryan is one of the exceedingly few addressing the fundamental, systemic drivers of our debt and prommulgating workable plans to address it. "If we are truly going to put the country's fiscal house in order, it will not be enough to temporarily reduce what Washington spends...We haven't seen a budget passed in the Senate in two years," he continued. "The president hasn't put out a specific plan to fix this problem, and they don't even want to go with structural entitlement reform which is what you have to do to fix this problem, prevent this downgrade and get this economy growing."

But all of our fellow FReepers told us Boehner had it in for Ryan, was against Ryan and would never have appointed him to the commission to spite him and everyone else. Now it seems Ryan didn’t even want to be part of the commission.

Free Republic is filled with countless idiots these days ... Nobody in this country has any reason anymore ...

Did you not post the same exact BS yesterday???? Ryan is a fool trying to hide his record, he voted for TARP and helled whip the vote, and he did the same damn thing with this boner cave. Now he runs around saying my hands are clean. Give me a list of what departments the fool would cut today for a balanced budget.

But all of our fellow FReepers told us Boehner had it in for Ryan

You must have been reading someplace else and thinking you were reading FR. First, all FReepers have rarely, if ever, agreed on anything. Second, if there was a majority consensus about how Boehner might be viewing Ryan, most of the posts were about how Ryan caved and kissed Boehner's ring when he voted for the Reid/Boehner travesty. There's no reason whatsoever that Boehner would "have it in" for Ryan.

Free Republic is filled with countless idiots

Well, I know the person's point. Recently, the tone of FR has been heavily anti-GOP, and honestly 90% of it comes from a couple of Dem trolls---and they know who they are.

But common is the notion that Snow, Collins, and Brown would be on the committee---repeated here endlessly---when in fact it's conservatives like Kyl, Portman, and Toomey. I'd prefer Rubio, Paul, and Toomey, but I have respect for Kyl and Portman was supported by OH's Tea Party.

"Did you not post the same exact BS yesterday????"

No, I didn't, but while we're on the subject, do you not post the same rude, arrogant, argumentative, and disrespectful crap every day?

I suppose you think it would have demonstrated wisdom to vote against TARP, but then I'm certain that you have absolutely no concept of the magnitude or imminence of the collapse that would have befallen us had TARP not passed. I suppose in your imagination, the utter destruction of the global financial system that maintains our civilization would have been met with an 'oh, well, that's how free markets work' attitude, without any concept of the notion that we have not maintained a true free market in decades, and that collapse would lead to the empowerment of every sordid, machinating element of global society that you as a conservative likely oppose. Moreover, you apparently see inestimable value in shutting down the government in a politically suicidal fight over legislative half-measures that don't address the true drivers of our debt, a mere 16 months before the critical contest of our time, while pilloring the one representative who has single-handidly put forth the only comprehensive and politically feasible plan to deal with our fiscal crisis. It may be self-gratifying to grouse and carp about the insufficiency of the efforts of others, or to oppose every workable solution for a fictional panacea that comports with your notion of ideological purity, but it's neither realistic or productive, and when it's conducted in a routinely impudent fashion, it's altogether unwelcome.

I'm anti-RINO too. But if it's a RINO vs. Obama, that's a no brainer. I don't think it will be. I think it will be Perry, who will win.

But people who say categorically "I won't vote for Mitt"---well, Mitt is like Mussolini. On the wrong side, dangerous if he is allowed to have his way, but entirely controllable by the party/system/conservative wing if in power. Obama is like Hitler. Utterly uncontrollable and totally destructive. So if it's a choice in November 2012 between Mitt and Zero, no question at all what I'll do.

Meanwhile, I'll do everything I can in the primaries to stop the Mittster, and I don't think it will be that hard.

LOL. You mean the "effing RINOs" like Alan West? I seem to remember you saying the same thing about never supporting McCain, but when it came down to McCain vs. Obama, the choice was clear.

And I've made my position very clear. I'll oppose Romney in the primaries. I expect he'll lose. But I would vote for Ron Paul, Rudy Guliani, or anyone with an R beside their name other than Obama.

As for "rebellions brewing," well, the Stamp Act was passed in 1765, and no one took up arms until 1775. So these rebellions take quite a while to brew sometimes.

What would Pelosi, Reid, and Co. have done if they had a lock on one house of congress and had a chance to block our agenda?
