McALLEN, Texas (AP) - For all of his rock-solid conservative credentials, Texas Gov. Rick Perry may have an Achilles' heel: immigration.
Perry will undoubtedly focus his presidential campaign on Texas' relatively healthy economy and its low taxes and his record in creating jobs in the 11 years he's been governor. What he may have to explain on the stump is how illegal immigrants have contributed to that success, adding as much as $17.7 billion a year to the state gross product and enjoying such benefits as in-state tuition at public universities.
"Gov. Perry is very eager to appear tough on illegal immigration, but upon closer inspection he's part of the problem," complained William Gheen, who runs the North Carolina-based political action committee Americans for Legal Immigration. The group intends to educate conservative groups about candidates' positions on that issue.
Tea party criticism about Perry's immigration record is now appearing on activist blogs in Arizona and New Hampshire.
A 2006 state report said that the state's illegal immigrants - 1.4 million then, 1.65 million now - added $17.7 billion to the gross state product, and that the state came out ahead on taxes it collected versus services it provided. But local governments and county hospitals were shouldering the burden of caring for that population.
The Texas Association of Business, which has backed Perry in all his gubernatorial campaigns and has members who individually have provided Perry with hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign cash, touted that report in its firm support of comprehensive immigration reform. TAB, the state's chamber of commerce, has lobbied for immigration reform and against state legislation regulating immigration.

Keep saying “Reagan” if you want, its meaningless today.
Notice the McAllen Texas posting.
I read the article and am trying to figure out why the Buffalo NY paper carries an AP story that I see has not basis for carrying the McAllen posting. Thas my neck of the woods and I don’t like Perry, but I like even less someone using the valley as his firing base when they don’t know poop from papas down here. A false location for a hit shot.
Dos linguas for dos votos!
This hangs over Perry’s head like Romneycare hangs over Romney. It is enough to disqualify both for me. SEAL THE BORDER, kick the illegal invaders OUT and off our social programs.
Perry is giving amnesty to many more by slyly looking the other way. Why are there 1,000 illegal alien babies being born in Parkland Hospital every month? Where are they getting the money? From the federal government, no doubt? And who is working dilligently to get OUR money to Parkland Hosptial to subsidize all of those births by illegal mothers? There is such a stink about this.
I have crossed Perry, Romney, Ron Paul and Pawlenty off my list. No need to bother with them anymore. Although, despite his excentricities I do give Ron Paul a lot of credit for bringing up the Federal Reserve. I hope that there will be a coninued debate about it.
Yeah, and that's how you end up with someone supposedly on your own side trying to cram Harriet Myers, Dubai Ports, and Amnesty down your throat.
Please stop smearing the name of Ronald Reagan by equating his missteps with those of a slimy opportunist like Rick Perry.

This along with the signing of a Voter ID law and a requirement for proof of citizenship to obtain a TX DL.
(an anti-sanctuary cities bill didn't pass due to lack of votes although the governor made it a high priority issue)
To say he's pro-illegal is being disingenuous.
You guessed wrong.
Same political BS over and over and over.
It boils down to...We've chosen our guy who aids and abets destructive, open borders policies, while forcing tax payers to foot the bill...Why, if you don't vote for our guy, you must be a commie supporter..
Thanks for the humor, but I've seen and heard all this BS before.
McCain was a veteran too. So was John Murtha.
Or what????
What is your point?
If Perry signed a pledge agreeing to NEVER sign amnesty legislation as POTUS... AND to seal the Mezzican border with
US Army units..... then and only then would I vote for him.
Otherwise..... I say.. Adios Mofo! to Rick Perry.
He could have muscled through the “sanctuary city” bill, that was in the legislative special session, but instead he caved to big Texas Republican Party donors, like Charles Butts of HEB Food stores, who want open borders.
Big business in Texas likes the taxpayers here subsidizing the education and health care costs for all their illegal slime employees.
Because when owning two mansions is just not enough, you
have to employ a bunch of cheap labor illegals so that you
can have three and a yacht too.
By the way... google “Adios Mofo!”. It’s pretty funny.
Or you will continue to look ridiculous.
I definitely won’t vote for Perry. Not only is he pro-amnesty but he’s a liar for saying that he’s trying to stop illegals and the problem is all the federal government’s fault. Perry is inviting illegals over by giving them all kinds of benefits and refusing to enforce the immigration laws. Remove the incentive, make life living hell for the illegals and most of them won’t come.
You mean EXACTLY what the anti-Perry crowd does? (add thread hijacking to the list)
Think about it.
Stick head deeper in sand.
In 2001, Texas under Perry, became the first state in the country to pass an in-state tuition law for illegal aliens. The law created a national movement.

If this isnt enough, there are about 1000 anchor babies per month being churned out at Dallas Parkland Hospital...That is just one hospital in Texas, every month.
In Parkland Memorial Hospital Dallas, the second busiest maternity ward in the United States, 70% of the women giving birth were illegal aliens.
That added up to 11,200 babies for which Medicaid kicked in 34.5 million dollars to deliver these babies, the feds another 9.5 million and Dallas taxpayers tossed in 31.3 million. The average illegal patient is 25 years and giving birth to her second anchor baby.

Rick Perry's Texas jobs boom: The whole story
Texas leads the nation in minimum-wage jobs, and many positions don't offer health benefits. Also, steep budget cuts are expected to result in the loss of more than 100,000 jobs.
Many of the positions that have been created are on the lower end of the pay scale. Some 550,000 workers last year were paid at or below the federal minimum wage of $7.25, more than double the number making those wages in 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
That's 9.5% of the Texas workforce, which gives it the highest percentage of minimum-wage workers in the nation -- a dubious title it shares with Mississippi.
Perry signed a budget in May that slashes $15 billion in government spending over the next two years. Also, the federal stimulus funds that poured into the state since 2009 have largely dried up The state budget cuts alone could result in the loss of more than 100,000 jobs, many of them in the public sector
That is one opinion...noted.
