Asian Honey, Banned in Europe, Is Flooding U.S. Grocery Shelves
Food Safety News ^ | Aug 15, 2011 | Andrew Schneider

A third or more of all the honey consumed in the U.S. is likely to have been smuggled in from China and may be tainted with illegal antibiotics and heavy metals. A Food Safety News investigation has documented that millions of pounds of honey banned as unsafe in dozens of countries are being imported and sold here in record quantities.

And the flow of Chinese honey continues despite assurances from the Food and Drug Administration and other federal officials that the hundreds of millions of pounds reaching store shelves were authentic and safe following the widespread arrests and convictions of major smugglers over the last two years.

Experts interviewed by Food Safety News say some of the largest and most long-established U.S. honey packers are knowingly buying mislabeled, transshipped or possibly altered honey so they can sell it cheaper than those companies who demand safety, quality and rigorously inspected honey.

Not only would I do it again ... I'd do it 10 years earlier! Who knew you could grow in affection for insects? I even enjoy assembling the woodenware and painting it. Need to do some of that tomorrow.

I need to order a very small bee suit because my 2-1/2 year old granddaughter absolutely loves to visit the hives.

The beehive business and the honey business are a free for all. You can get into it and see how you fare. There is no cartel. Beehives are trucked all over California and America to pollinate certain crops at just the right time. A beekeeper can make more from pollination services (for hire) than from the honey

During WW2 many beekeepers were forced to stay at home on the home front. Pollinating crops was deemed more important than fighting our enemies. Certain crops need an assist from beehives (pollination) on the premises otherwise you get skimpy yields.

My real problem is being in a suburban development. I mow my own grass but my next door neighbors have a crew that comes in with mowers, blowers, gasoline powered trimmers. I’m afraid of their guys getting stung and me getting sued.

I kind of forget. To re-queen your hive how do you extract the present queen? When I had hives I could never find the queen. After extracting Queen you would kill her I presume?

Some of the canned fruit at Target and Cub Foods is from CHINA!!!. If it doesn’t say “Product of USA” Don’t buy or eat it!

The FDA and USDA don’t have the manpower to check the flood of food from China for contaminates or adulteration, and for God’s sake don’t eat any seafood, frozen or otherwise from China.

We get our honey from our neighbor who has several hives. It’s raw, and contains the pollen from our own area; good for allergies I’ve heard. It tastes good, too.

Canadian merchandise can be labelled Made in Canada if more than 50% of VALUE is created in Canada.

That means, if you buy apple concentrate in China for 20 cents a pound and make apple juice out of it you can label it made in canada, because out of $1.59 for a liter of juice apple concentrate is worth 10 cents. Perfectly legal

(As opposed to cow, pork or sheep waste here.
excrement is excrement.)

you are obviously very ignorant on the subject..

The use of human feces as fertilizer is a risky practice as it may contain disease-causing pathogens. Nevertheless, in developing nations it is widespread. Common parasitic worm infections, such as ascariasis, in these countries are linked to night soil, since their eggs are in feces. There have also been cases of disease-carrying tomatoes, lettuce, and other vegetables being imported from undeveloped nations into more developed nations.

Human waste may be attractive as fertilizer because of the high demand for fertilizer and the relative availability of the material to create night soil. In areas where native soil is of poor quality, the local population may weigh the risk of using night soil.

The safe reduction of human waste into compost is possible. Many municipalities create compost from the sewage system biosolids, but then recommend that it only be used on flower beds, not vegetable gardens. Some claims have been made that this is dangerous or inappropriate without the expensive removal of heavy metals.

Surprising, but not a shock. There are just a heck of a lot of people in business and government who do not want consumers to have knowledge of where the products they buy were actually produced.

And, if sellers thought giving consumers that knowledge would be a positive reflection on their products, they'd put true country of origin information in a prominent place on labels. The opposite is also true, obviously.

Some foreign exporters get around the tariff by mixing honey from different sources, while others infuse up to 50 percent high fructose corn syrup into the honey, he says.

My brother had Type I Diabetes. He used honey in place of the regular cane sugar most of us use, because it's easier to digest and causes fewer problems for diabetics. High fructose corn syrup is practically a death sentence for diabetics. I wonder if he was consuming high fructose corn syrup, and if it contributed to his death.

“..you are obviously very ignorant on the subject..”

Perhaps.

but how long have people in LDCs been using human excrement as a fertilizer for their crops? Do we see a significant incidence of human pathinogens infecting those who consume said said crops?

IF so, one would expect to see a significant decline in the indigenous population. This appears not to be the case. The LDCs continue to out-populate industrialized nations.

kindly explain this dichotomy.
