PITTSBURGH -- Comcast has a new program that lowers the price of its monthly Internet service from $48 to $9.95 for families whose children qualify for free school lunch.

The "Internet Essentials" program is being rolled out for the upcoming school year. It was announced Tuesday at the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh offices downtown.

"It has the capacity to equalize educational activity and to bring the same high-quality educational materials to kids in our hardest-hit urban districts and the kids in our wealthiest suburban districts," a Comcast spokesman said.

RE :”Comcast probably has an expansive fiber network considering high definition channels require the bandwidth that only optical fiber can provide. If Comcast is as shitty as it was when I was in college, then they probably deserve what they get with this subsidization scheme.
My guess right now: Comcast loses their ass to non-paying welfare customers and goes begging the Fed for a handout.

Here Comcast is all coax cables and the technology is crap, you cant find anything with it's program search feature and it has no utility to create favorites personal TV guides to ignore channels of no interest (or you don't even get.) It is crap.

Verizon FIOS is designed to easily find both your channels and programs of interest easily and record them if you get a DVR box,

Comcast just saved these folks nearly $40 a month, maybe they can now go through the trouble to make their kid a Sandwich, toss in an Apple/Carrots plus some chips and send them off to school.

bwaahahahahahahahah, silly me

Well remember that even coax to your home (client-side) does not mean that their entire network is copper. Fiber’s been around for the better part of 20 years, and most cable providers are using it since high def requires such a large expanse of bandwidth.

FIOS is problematic in our area. Verizon made an enormous push a few years ago to get everyone on board, but no one wants to make the jump since Bright House is such a strong leader in the community and an excellent overall provider of services. Not to mention, FIOS was panned by the local media for constant problems with television reception, bad receivers, and abysmal customer service.

Folks vote with their wallets, and in our area, Bright House is the clear winner.

Where my daughter lives in Colorado the kids can get lunch if there are 4 people in the family up to $46K income a year.
It really is not hard to qualify for “free lunch”.

A lot of businesses use BillPay or Automatic Draft to get their money. Our lowest paid employees frequently balk at Direct Deposit (required) because they don’t have a bank account. Some even ask if they can be paid in cash.

They won’t pay the bill(if they even know about it) so it’s almost a gimmick.

If you saw the headline here yesterday, Detroit Public Schools are now offering “free” lunches to EVERY child, so as to try to erase the stigma of receiving a handout.

Comcast will lose no money on this deal.

Bingo. Just as I am sure McDonalds' decision to replace half the fries in a Happy Meal with carrot sticks or apple slices will work out in their favor. It's a beautiful thing.

SOME families??? Do you realize how many kids at your local public school qualify for free lunch???

Headline yesterday that every student in the Detroit Public Schools will now be getting a free lunch so that no one will feel stigmatized. So I guess everyone in Detroit has cheap Comcast internet now too.

Should short Comcast . . . no, wait, there will be Federal taxpayer subsidies soon, won’t there? Too big to fail.

Satellite is starting to look better and better.

Satellite internet blows great steaming chunks, I connect with one. Latency with all of the error correction and lightspeed delay is on the order of 1.5 seconds. That is the transit time for a ping to the gateway. Light rain takes it out completely, and if you get lightning there is a whole nother story to tell...

FIOS sounds pretty good to me. I can hardly wait.

Not to mention a 17GB rolling average bandwidth cap. That turns into about an hour of video per day, not optimal. Downloading an ISO (bootable CD image) eats more than a day’s allocation. Usually you can get enough speed to support video, except early in the evening when everybody is on. Sharing your internet connection with everybody else who only has satellite is very sub-optimal.

Reverse discrimination—plain & simple.

Hope someone sues them!!!

ALL of Detroit kids will get free food starting this fall.

SOOOO—Comcst will have to lower their prices all over Detroit????

This kind of business decision is self-destructive.

The internet works both ways. This makes me wonder what kind of content Comcast will try shoving down the throats of those families.
