A four-year-old girl has been mauled to death inside her suburban Melbourne home by a neighbour’s escaped pitbull-mastiff cross, renewing calls for the aggressive breed of dog to be banned.
Police Superintendent Graham Kent said the dog ran into the home, where Sudanese refugee Ayen Chol was watching TV with other children yesterday evening, and attacked.
A five-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman were also injured. Chol died at the scene.
Chol’s cousin Daniel Atem said the injured woman was outside the house when the dog chased her inside.
Atem said the dog then attacked the five-year-old. As Chol’s mother intervened it turned on Chol, who was clinging to her mother’s leg.
He said: 'It pulled the child from the mum... the daughter died. The dog left the child and then the owner of the dog came after that and took the dog out.'
Police says the dog will be destroyed and charges are being considered against its owner.
Family members described horrific scenes inside the home during the attack, with Ayen being shaken like a rag doll as one family member tried to beat the dog away with a table, local reports said.
The 30-year-old woman suffered puncture marks to her arms, while the five-year-old suffered bite wounds to the face.
Both were taken to hospital, where they remain in a stable condition.
The dead girl's father is working in southern Sudan but had been contacted and was returning home.
Mr Atem said: 'He's very, very, very sad. The elders community in southern Sudan will counsel him.'
The family migrated to Australia in 2004 for a better life.

I have been told, repeatedly, that attacks like this are rare.
I am honestly not saying this sarcastically nor (and I hate this word) judgmentally — but I don’t understand how these dogs kill children when adults are present. I can only think that they just inflict fatal injuries incredibly quickly.
Otherwise, the adult surely covers the child with his/her body, or kicks the dog across the county, or throws a table at it...?
Horrific. Just can’t imagine.
I don’t want muslims or pit bulls moving next to me. You just can’t trust them.
Why was she watching TV by an escaped pitbull?
The old “nature vs nurture” argument here settles on nature. My Boston Bull has no tendencies in this direction at all, yet he is a terrier. Pit Bull brains are wired different and then people train them to be aggressive.
According to the pitbull apologists, Basset hound attacks are just as common.
Have you ever watched a Jack Russel Terrier kill a rat? You could be standing right there and you could not save the rat. They grab and shake the victim and the neck is snapped instantly. In this case I think it said the dog grabbed the child by the face, one shake and the child’s neck is snapped.
This is a terrible thing and my heart goes out to the child and her family. The knee jerk reaction is the same as when a gun tragedy happens. Ban the gun or in this case ban the protective breed of dog. Disarm the population in any way possible so we will be dependent on police protection.
The more I think about it the more I think we aren’t being told the whole story. The dog came into the house where a whole group was watching TV? Something isn’t right here.
In the happenstance of a dog attack, you need to do three things.
1. Grab an umbrella or stick and wave it at the dog. The dog will grab the umbrella as if it is an extention of your arm.
2. With an aluminum bat, from Wal-mart, hit the dog on the head.
3. Keep hitting until death occurs.

Children should never watch tv by a neighbors’ escaped pit bull. That’s how these things happen. They should watch tv by a neighbors’ captive kitten.

If you've never been witness to a pit bull attack it's easy to understand your question. I've seen two attacks...one by a single dog, and the other by a pair working together. Each attack will live in my memory as among the most terrifying scenes of my life. About 25 years ago I came upon a scene where an adult was on the ground with pit on top of him...locked on his face...and two other adult men were trying to beat and pry the dog off. The were unable to get the dog to release the victim until one man literally pulled his belt off and strangled the dog to the point where it blacked out. The entire scene probably took three or four minutes. The other was a pair of pits that I watched attack a herd of cows just to the south of Folsom Blvd in Sacramento, also about 30 years ago. These two pits couldn't have been more than 20 lbs each. One by one they jumped up on these cows, locking onto the nose and ears. As the cow would shake to get the dogs off sections of the nose and ears of these cows would be ripped off. As soon as the dogs got to their feet they jumped right back up and locked onto the cow again. In the 20 minutes it took for the sheriff to come and shoot the dogs, they mauled 13 cows to the point where they had to be put down, and seriously injured another 5. If a single adult was sitting in that room when the dog locked onto the child I'd guess it would have been all but impossible to break the dog free in time to save the kid, unless the adult involved was a man, and was in fairly good shape. Or, they were armed or had a good level of knowledge about how to get a pit to release a victim.
