A four-year-old girl has been mauled to death inside her suburban Melbourne home by a neighbours escaped pitbull-mastiff cross, renewing calls for the aggressive breed of dog to be banned.
Police Superintendent Graham Kent said the dog ran into the home, where Sudanese refugee Ayen Chol was watching TV with other children yesterday evening, and attacked.
A five-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman were also injured. Chol died at the scene.
Chols cousin Daniel Atem said the injured woman was outside the house when the dog chased her inside.
Atem said the dog then attacked the five-year-old. As Chols mother intervened it turned on Chol, who was clinging to her mothers leg.
He said: 'It pulled the child from the mum... the daughter died. The dog left the child and then the owner of the dog came after that and took the dog out.'
Police says the dog will be destroyed and charges are being considered against its owner.
Family members described horrific scenes inside the home during the attack, with Ayen being shaken like a rag doll as one family member tried to beat the dog away with a table, local reports said.
The 30-year-old woman suffered puncture marks to her arms, while the five-year-old suffered bite wounds to the face.
Both were taken to hospital, where they remain in a stable condition.
The dead girl's father is working in southern Sudan but had been contacted and was returning home.
Mr Atem said: 'He's very, very, very sad. The elders community in southern Sudan will counsel him.'
The family migrated to Australia in 2004 for a better life.

Ref. post #37.
You are a very ill, mentally sick person.
IT'S A FACT JACK! Pit bulls account for a higer percentage of maulings than any other breed.
If you read the article it said the “woman was outside and the dog chased her into her house”.
He probably trains and fights Pit Bulls down there at his place in Panama.
But probably wouldn't. Dog owners seem to have irrational blind and deaf spots concerning the activities of their pets. They see and hear no evil about what their pets do. Example from Atlanta about 10 years ago. Pit bull owner stands in her yard enjoying the spectacle as her dog mauls a little girl. Neighbor runs into his house gets out .357 and shoots dog. At that point the dog owner flies into a rage and attacks the neighbor screaming "Don't hurt my dog." At which point he shot her (non-fatally.) The dog owner got six months for assaulting the guy who shot the dog. What she didn't get was any consequences for her vicious animal attacking the little girl. No charges were filed against the good samaritan who killed the dog and shot the owner.
MY personal opinion is that is what should happen to every dog owner whose pet attacks someone.
Maybe he uses them to guard agricultural products. Who knows.
No, I don’t.
I know that many people have aversions to large breeds.
While I’m not one (former Shephered owner), I’ve seen enought large animal damage to understand. I don’t put my head in the sand and claim, “My baby is a sweetums and wouldn’t hurt ANYBODY.”
The US Navy War College was one of the first to focus significantly on CAPABILITY, not intent. Intents can change in a minute (as experienced rather frequently with “Sweetums”), but capabilities don’t. People dealing with large breeds should KNOW the capabilities of the animal are significantly greater than that of smaller breeds. That alone is enough reason to be extra careful.
And, I was once mauled by our veterinarian’s Doberman while delivering paperwork to his home (down the street). I know that the guy though his Dobie was the most loveable EVER.
A guy I work with (black) got a Rotty.
Named it “Felony” (yep).
It bit so many people, they put it down.
He’s got another dog, now.
A Rotty (yep).
And now the guy’s a reserve cop. I give him shit because while his father was white and his mother was black, he’s trying to be the stereotype of one while living up to the other.
I doubt it.
Such people are clearly beyond it.

Yes, I remember when the breeds of choice for thugs were Dobermans and Rottweilers. I remember some fear of German Shepherds, but I don't ever recall them as being the choice of thugs.
Granted, the Internet wasn't around in those days, but there weren't 1/50th (no, 1/100th or less) of the stories about Dobermans or Rottweilers killing people as we now read about the breeds called "Pit Bulls" or Pit mixes. And I'm pulling those figures down to account for the media's calling every unknown breed a Pit Bull.
What, three Pit Full stories in the last two weeks? There weren't three Rottweiler stories in a year back in the day. And yet three Pit Bull stories in a week isn't unusual.
There simply isn't any comparison between the past Doberman/Rottweiler fear and the last fifteen+ years of Pit Bull attacks.
The pit bulls are getting a bad rap. It could just as easily have been a Chihuahua or a French Poodle, or a Jack Russell Terrorist. /s
One woman brought her 1 1/2 year old deaf pitt bull. Her reason for doing it was not to cheer up the sick and in firmed but to make people like and not fear pitt bulls.
When she entered the room, late, I heard her dog growl at the other occupants. Not a good candidate for a therapy dog, IMHO. I don't think she and her dog passed on to the next level, me and mine did. :)
Before Internet use became so widespread, you weren’t as likely to hear about what went on in another state unless it was a Big story.
The problem is that bad owners refuse to properly train, socialize, and properly breed their animals. When that happens, you have poorly bred, ill(or non-) trained, and ill (or non) socialized dogs running about.
That is detrimental to any type (”Pitbull” is not a breed, but a type) of dog, much less any dog breed.
The problem is not the dogs themselves; the problem is deliberate negligence in training, breeding and socialization.
When “pitbulls” are no longer the “in style” dog, the bad trainers, socializers and breeders will move on to another type.
You should google pictures of pit bull attacks...you will be shocked at the damage they inflict.
“3. Keep hitting until death occurs.”
Whose death? That blow to the head of such a dog, while it is launched in a lethal assault, had better be accurately aimed or it will serve only to further enrage.
Why are you wondering the whole story is there. The dog followed the woman when she ran into the house, dog grabbed the child by the face and shook it. That is how dogs kill prey, they shake it and snap its neck on the first shake. It’s all over very quickly.
What I wrote was incorrect.
Rottweilers are apparently Pit Bull-lite. I was wrong.
According to dog bit statistics, the Pit Bull breeds (and Pit mixes) accounted for 59% of all fatal dog attacks during the three-year period from 2006-2008. Rottweilers accounted for 13%. Between Pits and Rottweilers, that's 72% of all fatal attacks.
Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Cana Presarios, and their mixes account for:
How many standard deviations from the norm do you have to go for those breeds to account for those percentages unless a significant part of the problem is the breed and not just the owner?
