My elderly parents live on the south shore of Long Island as well. I’ve been trying to get ahold of them to convince them to come up here to VT for the weekend at least (they’re still in decent shape at 78 and 74 and live in the home I grew up in). My bet is that they won’t go.

My sister talked to my dad yesterday and he said he’s “well prepped for the hurricane as he has a fresh stock of bourbon and pipe tobacco.”. Argh.

Particularly disturbing info about the highest tides of the year occurring during the same time.

Know a homeowner in Marion, MA ... large estate on the water with little elevation. Worst case scenario high tide as hurricane hits pushing storm surge up Buzzards Bay (Marion MA is close by the western end of the Cape Cod canal). The surge will be amplified as water backs up ... the canal will provide a partial outlet but not enough to prevent abnormally high water along that portion of Buzzards Bay.

Just checked the track on the Satellite Loop - the eye is about to hit the Eastern-most edge of Grand Bahama Island. That's essentially on-track with the latest official projection - certainly no further west at this point, anyway. That points Irene right at the Cape Lookout lighthouse.

Can't imagine what it is like now.

When the Admin Monitor says that about a storm, we know it is potentially serious. I’m warning friends to make plans to get out now. Thankfully, I built up some good will with my network of friends by talking one family out of the path of Katrina - they had planned to ride her out. The house was rebuilt finally last year. Our discussions do help save lives. I could point them to the data to help convince them.

Problem is the east coast (especially NJ) has not had a serious hurricane since the early 60's.

There will be idiots who will want to be riding their surf boards.

Too many folks don;t have respect for what nature can do.

Yep, "the band" is back together, I guess, LOL. Hi to y'all... it's been awhile!

Let's pray that Irene takes a weird track to the east and blows out to sea. (Hey, I can dream...)

I saw a “Megadisasters” show on what might happen if a Cat 2 storm hit NYC. If Irene stays Cat 3....can you imagine what might happen?

In the show, they predicted flooding in the streets of Manhattan and most certainly the subway system. They also said Long Island would be a major target with more damage than people think.

The main emphasis in the show was that it’s been too long since a major hurricane hit that area. People have forgotten what CAN happen.

I have a feeling that this weekend, they’re about to be reminded

Yes, although prayers might be better than dreams. ;-)

How are things in God's country, on the eastern shore of Virginia? That's one of my husband's and my "dream locations" for a future move. Someday we're going to escape from the People's Republik of Connecticut and head South. Somewhere between Virginia and Florida. No plans to move yet though...

I love the people and spirit of Texas, but not sure we can stand the heat.

Doing the prayer thing as well!..

All is well here on the Shore - friends are all debating about whether to leave Chincoteague or not. We had plans for spending the weekend up in Delaware leaving tomorrow morning and coming back Sunday afternoon. As of now we’re still going, but coming back Saturday afternoon - that may change again. We shall see.

Of course if the Shore is ordered evacuated that’s where we would go any so. But I doubt there will be evac orders, except possibly for visitors on Chincoteague.

Things To Do Ahead Of Irene’s Arrival
Updated: Thursday, 25 Aug 2011, 1:27 PM EDT
Published : Thursday, 25 Aug 2011, 1:27 PM EDT

Charlie McKenna, head of New Jersey’s Homeland Security Department, warns residents to prepare early for Hurricane Irene.

Here is a checklist of things to do before Irene’s suspected arrival late Saturday:

Top off gas tanks. If power is knocked out, gas pumps and ATMs
won’t work.
Have a working flashlight and batteries handy.
Have a battery-operated radio (to be able to listen to news
reports about the storm).
Fill drug prescriptions.
Have a first-aid kit at home.
Stock supplies of water and nonperishable food for 5 days. An
adequate water supply is 1 gallon of water per person per day.
Stock baby formula and diapers, if there are babies at home.
Heed evacuation orders from the Office of Emergency Management.

I’m not trying to alarm anyone.

But.

If you possibly can it might be useful to get a few 5gal gas cans from a hardware store and fill them. Also, fill all your vehicles. If you’re just w/o power for a few days you won’t have to worry if your gas station has power to pump or not. If the storm goes to sea you can use it to fill your car(s) next week.

My main concern is this. All those refineries in Elizabeth, NJ and other places on/near the coastline up there are probably beginning shutdown procedures about right now. It takes a while for them to do that. It will take a while for them to be back online again. The pumping stations on the pipelines they feed will also need electrical power.

My experience with Katrina, 100+m from the MS gulf coast was this: There were a few gas stations that got power back quickly, within a day or two. Unfortunately due to the infrastructure damage in/around the pumping stations further south the gas pipelines from Houston, TX area and Baton Rouge weren’t working. Gas had to be trucked in via tanker truck from TX. It was reserved for law enforcement, fire and ambulance services and for the power company trucks. It was *very* iffy with availability to normal civilians for a couple of *weeks*. Even though by then most neighborhoods had power, gas was in very short supply. Everyone was ‘back at work’ but some people had trouble finding the gas to get there/back.

Just something to think about. Hopefully no one will inadvertently blow up their garage?
