I felt a minor tremor here, it felt weird but was over in about ten or twenty seconds.

Foreshocks can occur minutes to days or even longer before the main shock.

From Wiki: The 2002 Sumatra earthquake is regarded as a foreshock of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake with a delay of more than two years between the two events.

I felt it big time here in northern VA

Never experienced anything like it. My bafflement as to how anybody manages to live in California and stay sane has just shot the moon.

Wonder what else might happen in the next month or two.

Good question. Feeling any aftershocks?

I felt it here in Irwin (jolt, pause, jolt). Husband felt it in New Stanton; ours HS...lights swayed; wall mounted TVs shook. Daughter, who works in Cranberry, didn’t feel it (but some of her co-workers did).

YUP

I think it’s an omen, actually . . .

imho,

Anyone living in the DC area without express orders from God to continue doing so . . . is clueless.

. . . along with Florida . . . etc.

Times are a changin’

Joya’s Dad’s lived in the area for 40 years and that’s the first quake he’s ever felt.

Us West Coast Freepers are watching this all with a bit of amusement.

When California faces a Category 3 hurricane, we'll smirk.

Actually we won't. We'll be concerned. What westerners don't understand is that in east coast cities there are masonry buildings that are 300 years old. A 6.0 is a big deal in the east. Especially when a Cat 3 hurricane is due to arrive in four days.

Yeah we have AT&T wireless, our cell service was wonky for a few minutes right after the quake. My West Coast Facebook friends are poking fun at us for freaking out about this, but hey this isn’t normal for us dangit!

I felt it as far away as Wheeling WV at a Steel Mill. Thought I was imagining it or something.

speaking of waves.. re: the hospital corridor waves..

I was in a open space area during the 1980 Morgan Hill 6.0 quake near San Jose, I saw waves moving across the ground and light poles and such swaying quite vigorously from side to side .. I was on the phone with wifey who was 15 miles away under desk at work thru the whole thing..

The Loma Prieta was pretty intense too, going home on the freeway, listening to the pre-world series festivities on the radio , and then bouncing around on the freeway like we were on balloon tires.. everybody stopped. I saw the buildings in downtown shaking pretty good.. that one sloshed quite a bit of water out of the pool that day

Ha!!....Okay, so any quake can be a foreshock. No matter how many years before.

Got it.

Hit us in Baltimore. A 5.8mag in Virginia it seems. Cell phones aren’t working.

Tip: When lines are jammed, the data still usually gets through. Try texting or emailing.

Two zones in Virginia are more susceptible to earthquakes than others, and can be identified by the rivers which follow those faults. The James River follows the Central Virginia Seismic Zone between Charlottesville and Richmond, while the New River follows the other zone from Radford to the West Virginia border.

I’m from Texas, but moved to California many years ago. One of my first quakes was the 7.1 Loma Prieta. I was at work with 2 California natives. After we dove under some tables, I asked if the earthquake was normal. I only got concerned when they both said “no” and they were upset.

I use to freak out at little quakes. Now, I handle ones under a 6.0 pretty well.

Well to your West Coast Freepers....this was utterly amazing. Once I felt a very slight earthquake back when I lived in Merryland. It was so small that both husband and myself weren’t sure. It wasn’t until the next day that reports came in of a very minor tremor.

Thus you go to know that we have no idea what an earthquake of this size feels like. I’m over 60 years old.

When I felt, and SAW with my lying eyeballs...the table going round and round I...well it was just the most incredible thing. Not to mention my dog predicting this thing for a half an hour before it happened.

This is just an amazing thing for us east coasters and since it looks like no damage or pain anywhere, it is an experience we’ll not soon forget and will talk about for days to come.
