Plus, being from Massachusetts, I hear the same thing said about the Northeastern USA, specifically Massachusetts. I can’t say I blame them in a lot of respects, but...I live up here, and I am a conservative.

If you have a carpenters level place on the top of the wall each side of the crack. If the bubble is outside of the lines on either side of the crack you may have a serious problem.
But of course you will need a pro in to look at the crack.
Don’t know. I saw a shot if from some webcam and either the camera or the monument had moved.

They appeared slightly freaked and the news conference ended abruptly and CNN pulled away.

I grew up in California. My first experience with an earthquake was as a child. I awoke to my bed (which was on casters) rolling about the bedroom. My brothers and I were laughing because it was like an amusement ride. Anything that is 5.0 or less is of no concern to most Californians. They happen everyday, somewhere on the west coast. But, I can imagine the fright an earthquake elsewhere in the U.S. might cause.

The east coasters are getting de-virginized with regards to quakes.
I understand that the epicenter was Mineral, VA. I wasn’t there at the time but Ms. OP who was at our house only 15 miles from Mineral said that the house shook violently and the sound was scary beyond belief.
This is the second earthquake near our house. In 2006 I was out in the woods cutting firewood and an earthquake around 3 or so hit near Richmond, about 70 miles away. Again, Mrs. OP was in the house, which shook quite a bit.

For such a shallow quake, differing types of soil, rock, may resonate far away from the quake???? Don’t know, but seems possible.
