Maybe the hurricane will get him up in MV.

My son’s daycare lady said ALL her phone service was out - land and cell until I called 45 min later. Weird! I’m 10 min from her and my phone was fine! I called my parents within 5 min.

That was the first big earthquake I lived through. But I think it was at 6:01 am, and wasn’t it in 1971 ? not 72 ? It was centered in Sylmar, and destroyed the Olive View Hospital if I recall correctly. There were some deaths. We had a 2-story house, and you could really feel those aftershocks up there. I slept in my parent’s bedroom for a few weeks, I remember.

You're correct. It was in February 9, 1971 at about 6:01 a.m. I was 11 years old, and it was my first major quake. I lived in North Hollywood at the time, and they closed the local school for the week (it's was the Lincoln's birthday holiday anyway).

The brand new Olive View Hospital did what it was supposed to do (wings separated and gently dropped), but was completely destroyed as a result. Most of the 65 deaths occurred at the Veterans Administration Hospital in San Fernando, as the building was made of unreinforced masonry. Two freeway overpasses collapsed.

I remember that they evacuated just about everyone who lived between the Van Norman Dam to the north and the Sepulveda Dam Basin in the south. The Van Norman Dam had suffered significant damage.

I spent 4 weeks in the rebuilt Olive View Hospital this past January, and I sort of enjoyed freaking out the nursing staff with stories of how it collapsed 40 years before! Hey, I was bored.

Yeah, I just drove home across DC to check on my reef aquarium; no problems. A door on the canopy was knocked open but none of the residents jumped out the tank.

First earthquake I ever felt, which is odd considering how much I’ve read about them.

I trust that in the last 900 posts the apocalptikooks haven’t been trying to exploit the quake through astounding scientific ignorance?

Last one in VA was a 5.8 in May, 1897. Pretty rare event. But excellent excuse for “disaster stimulus” economy and federal “help me” status. In short, a whole lot of woo-woo.
Nobody talking to the people IN Mineral, VA? Why not?

Still feeling a little disoriented.

I'm a lifelong Californian ... I know the feeling! They're saying it was a 5.9 -- that's pretty respectable. Also, it depends on the kind of ground you're on as to how it will feel. A dinky little 5.4 hit near where I live about three years ago, the epicenter less than half a mile away, and it was a solid, frightening, fast jolt, but not much more (though it certainly "disoriented" me for a bit!). Yet five to eight miles away on either side of the ridge where I live, that little quake lasted for nearly a minute (wave lengths, like a pebble tossed in water) and wreaked havoc in quite a few stores, with entire inventories crashing down off of shelves.

Earthquakes are remarkably effective reminders of just WHO is in charge on this ol' earth ... and it ain't man! They can be pretty humbling!

Wow. I was going to say we’ve never had an earthquake here in southern WI, however there was a weak one that was felt around here maybe a year ago? I did not even know it happened, but some were awakened by it that night. Lucky dogs! (fill in own joke here)

I also missed an awesome meteorite in 2010. Sometime in the spring. It was around 9pm, when I usually go out to the barn. Of course that night I went out later and missed a HUGE meteor. I was (still am) sorry I missed it. It was epic.

Sure does. And it might have been real exciting watching those planes swinging on those chains. Longer the chain the greater the pendulum effect.

I don't really trust my building on the best of days (especially the elevators). What was really disconcerting, and gives me more respect for those who have gone through monsters, was not knowing whether it was going to get worse or not. When my bike fell over and my shades starting swaying heavily, I started to remember that I live on a swamp, in a building not really designed for this kind of activity. Never really got scared, but I wasn't sure whether to try to get out or not (10 stories, plus the stairs aren't really close to me).

"Humbling" -- that is a good word for it.
