Damned dismissive fools. As with all weather, no one really knows what is going to happen.

Also, I direct anyone to study Agnes if you want to poo-poo 60mph. Of course, that was horrific mostly because unlike most TS/hurricanes, it traveled overland and stalled rather than skirting the coast.

Hi again Tomkat. During “normal times” I occasionally listen to sideband at around 7,100 KHz give or take. Once or twice I heard activity at 14,135 but not since. I’ll have to try the 3.9 MHz the other poster suggested once I get my random wire antenna on the roof fixed. I think it is too low a frequency for the Degen indoor loop antenna to be effective, although that antenna and tuner is really good at reducing noise.

A little different imho. Katrina was a Cat 5 storm churning in the gulf for days and nowhere for the water to go but into the gulf.

You didn't read the first comment-it was posted when the storm was a Cat 1? I recall that even after the sucker hit many on here were making fun of the "media hype" because the early reports were minimal damage and some even started partying in New Orleans again.

The point is that none of us know what was going to happen, just like none of us know what this storm will bring and its the height of hubris to lay claim that this is all hype at this point. Perhaps the law of averages will side that most storms warnings are not necessary but that is what warnings are all about. Only a fool would claim that these storms are harmless and over hyped before they even run their course.

I bet you get buried on your ping list when you do these hurricane threads.

Thanks allot for doing them.I'm from Missouri and don't need them, but I trust what is going on here more than the media to find out really going on.

The people who are in the path of these storms are getting an invaluable source of information from what you do here.

Thank you for your service here.:)

I get the feeling that some of this hyperreaction of local governments is real, and some is just going to help the ‘economy’ in the form of ‘stimulus,’ with a wink and a nod from the Obama regime. Sort of the way that hiring thousands of census takers lowered the unemployment numbers for months.

Unless your friend lives in a flood zone she should be ok. She may have lost power though. There are power outages all around us. I am surprised that we still have power here at our place...

Virtually all HF voice communications today are single side band. Time to upgrade!

Yes, but it also hit land as a Cat 3 and less. It petered out pretty soon after it lay waste to LA and AL.

You never can tell - even “wimpy” storms can pack a big punch. There are more variables involved than just wind speed.

But its an awful waste of money if our president has the power to lower the sea levels like he promised.

Excellent advice! Use the phones that don’t plug in though, because the ones that have the caller id and other such features don’t work. Get a plain old fashioned phone and use it.

There will always be folks like that on threads, but there are actually scientists wondering if this one is being ‘hyped’ by our own forecasters at this point. The jury is still out obviously, but with this crowd in charge right now..all bets are off. I don’t trust any of them and neither should you.

All of these hurricanes are dangerous and unfortunately people die everytime one comes ashore. The models are now changing btw.

I have one of these on top of the chimney, about 20' high.
Wondering how it might work as a SW and/or general purpose radio antennae . . .

I read a few of the reviews for that Degen unit .. lotta satisfied owners and the price is pretty good too.
Will prolly order one to replace this Grundig before SHTF season next year .. thanks again for the info !

Agree. The only thing I would be worried about at this point is the storm surge,spin-off tornados and flooding from the rain. You have to admit though that the press is obviously hoping that they can turn this storm into something to ‘help’ Obama.

It also is not in a total bowl like the gulf.

****

And it was just a bit more difficult for FEMA to judge where to preposition supplies when the storm was coming AT any particular chosen area. When storm comes up the Atlantic coast, anywhere west of a certain longitude can be a safe bet for prepositioning depots.
