Approximately 65 million people are likely to be directly impacted by Hurricane Irene as the storm takes aim at the densely populated Eastern Seaboard. Evacuations are underway for high flood risk areas.
Mass transit cancellations, schedule changes and road/bridge closures are occurring throughout the storm warning areas. Please check with local news and Emergency Management Operations to determine the recommendations for your immediate area.

Rights on all points... which makes me think of these add-ons:
1. As time is marching on here, Camp Lejuene is coming into more and more risk since Irene is still not turning. Also MCAS Cherry Point at Havelock, although it’s 15-20 miles inland.
2. The south-facing Emerald Isle barrier Island is now in SEVERE risk... storm surge overwash is LIKELY to the east of the eye.
MplsSteve,
It was either your browser caching an older image or the server the image was hosted on gave you the old one.
Posts here on FR can not be edited by anyone other than a Mod.
There is no way NautiNurse could have corrected anything.
I see outdated images all the time from radar.weather.gov even when directly viewed within a browser.
So no more bickering and back to storm info you two? :)
Prayers for all in harm's way from a veteran of Agnes '72.
I was thinking about picking all my tomatoes here in New England...not so sure now.
News just in: Mayor of NY declared a mandatory evacuation of sections of the city. Asking people to start leaving now, and for sure to start by tomorrow afternoon when the transit system will be shut down. Sounds like Bloomberg wants the people to get serious, get out, and not take any chances. Question is...where in the world are all those homeless people going to go and how are they going to get there? Hope they do a better job than the mayor of New Orleans did in getting people out. (Of course, that was Bush’s fault, LOL /sarc)
Same buoy 41004:

There are lots of evacuations going on through out the mid and lower shore, al of DelMarVa actually.
I’m right smack in the middle of the northern part of Accomack County, pretty close to the MD line. The only place really for us to go would be to Dover, so why bother - and the idea of dealing with the nightmare that is the current traffic conditions? No thanks.
Excellent tips. Great to see you with us for the weekend! {{{hugs}}}
New York City has lots of high ground. It’s just a matter of getting there. New Orleans had little high ground and most of it was below sea level. No comparison.
I’m in Massachusetts and thought that too. I’m making a huge tomato sauce tomorrow with what’s ripe and on the vine but I’m going to keep the others out there. My concern is with all the rain we are getting, not so much the wind.
That's excellent news. Go east, d****d storm, go east!
Based on Hurricanes Katrina, in N.O., Rita, in Beaumont, and Ike, in Houston, the following is best advice:
if inland, expect 2 to 3 weeks with no power. There will be debris everywhere so get clean-up equipment and bags handy.
Fill up the car and park it in a garage on 2nd floor in interior, say at the mall.
Get a car-plug cell phone charger for post storm.
If you have an electric gate or driveway gate, leave it open.
Water is more important than food. Get a big supply of water.
If you have a generator and are transporting fuel, never leave cans of gasoline in an unventilated area. Keep car windows down when driving around with it.
Get 2 weeks food for pets and 2 weeks worth of any medications. Eat what is in your fridge first, then the stuff that thaws from the freezer, then boxes and cans of food from the pantry. Nobody starves in a hurricane.
Protect personal property by whatever legal means.
People do stupid things right before the storm hits. Hunker, shelter in place, unless you are in a low-lying mandatory evacuation area. Do not evacuate unless instructed to do so by the fire or police department.
FEMA is useless. They cannot even get water off a truck. Expect nothing from FEMA.
Frankly, I can’t buy those model runs. The plain observations already put the storm to the west of their initial positions. I think Emerald Isle (south and west of Morehead City) is the target. Perhaps Pine Knoll Shores/Atlantic Beach/Indian Beach. Of course anything within 50+/- miles gets hurricane force winds.
The good news for Virginia and points north? If Irene crosses a hunk of NC land, it will be a lot weaker once emerging into the ocean again.
The bad news? New Yorkers may eventually think we cried “wolf” again.
Great to have you checking in! Hope all is well with you and yours these days.
Thanks for the thread! Is your mom still planning on staying on LI?
We are getting winds and rain and thunder now. Power is out to approximately 1500 people in Berkeley and more in Charleston Counties. Just a nice fall day.
| You then corrected your thread and put in the correct map
Also, it looks to me like the map is sourced directly from the NOAA site, and appears on the page here via an 'img' tag that references NOAA directly. NautiNurse might be good, but I don't think NOAA lets her change their web graphics. If I were a betting man, I'd bet that either your ISP or your browser showed you a cached map. It's either that or NOAA had the wrong map on their page since the 22nd. |
Thanks for the thread! Am on the Philly side of NJ and we received a copy of the governor’s alert this afternoon:
“Beginning at 6:00 p.m. this evening, contraflow will be in effect on Route 72, running for 28 miles to Route 70, closing all lanes to eastbound travel and utilizing all lanes of traffic for use in moving traffic westward . The measure is the latest action to aid residents in evacuating Long Beach Island in Ocean County. . . . Yesterday, the Governor ordered a temporary suspension of tolls on all parts of the Garden State Parkway south of the Raritan River and the Atlantic City Expressway beginning at 8:00 a.m. this morning. Governor Christie also announced that Routes 47 and 347 in Cape May County will be closed to eastbound traffic and that the use of all lanes of traffic will move westward beginning Friday evening at 6:00 pm. As part of this process, all ramps will be tightly controlled and additional personnel will be used to ensure safety.”
All the casinos in AC are to close as well (don’t remember the time).
Watched live chopper views of the ships going out to sea in Norfolk yesterday. God bless our sailors and keep them safe! (and their families left on shore having to deal with this storm!)
btw, thanks for serving!
My sis was in Hugo on St. Croix. It was horrible there and we didn’t hear from her for days. She finally made it to Puerto Rico and then flew to my home with her bedragled cat. That’s all she had left...herself and her cat. It was a blessed day when we finally heard from her.
Prayers are up!
The Infra-red satellite loop shows an obviously weakening storm — surprisingly so, but very much welcomed.
What’s more — it’s over 83° water: I have no idea why it would be weakening at all.
Same here in the Charleston area.
I should have added the link to that satellite loop.
Don’t know where the NWS got there info, but it sho’ ain’t sunny!
It’s a strange storm, isn’t it? Instead of strengthening, it stays around 100-110 mph, but it just gets a little bigger. Something is messing up the backside of it as well. I don’t know enough about meteorology to understand a lot of what’s in play, but the southwest edge of the storm is just sort of...not there. It’s like it only has 3/4 of an eyewall. It almost looks like it’s trying to fall apart, where it should be strengthening somewhat.

Oh yes. 1 mile from the bay. The eye should pass directly overhead. She will sincerely regret the decision the first time the windows begin to rattle.
we have lots of low ground too. The places they are evacuating are really low. I agree about New Orleans. Clearly no comparison. I don’t know how much high ground we have left on the other hand with a 10 foot storm surge.
The sun is shining, not a cloud in the sky but humid as all get out - typical August day on DelMarVa!
We have known that it would most probably make landfall between Edisto and the Outer Banks, weren’t you told to evacuate? If so you should have already headed inland and south and west. The storms don’t stop on the coast, they extend inland usually north, north east and east. I’m 25 miles from the coast but in a Flash Flood area because of the rivers and marshes.
Latest Weather observation for Wilmington as of 13:53

Heavy Rain Fog/Mist and Breezy
Clouds: BKN016 BKN021 BKN028
Temp 79 Dewpoint 76

Sea level 1008.0mb
Right, and the 11am forecast discussion only addresses a possible future change:
“SOUTHWESTERLY SHEAR IS FORECAST TO INCREASE AND SEA
SURFACE TEMPERATURES WILL BE GRADUALLY DECREASING. THIS SHOULD RESULT IN GRADUAL WEAKENING OF THE CYCLONE AS IT MOVES NEAR THE MID-ATLANTIC COAST.”
That’s the good news... the bad news is for North Carolina:
At 11am, the position fix was reported as 30.7N, 77.3W.
The 2pm position fix is now reported as 31.2, 77.5W.
That’s a sizable swing to the west for a storm that’s supposed to be starting toward the east. As I’ve been saying, that really puts Emerald Isle into direct play.
By 11pm, they expect 32.2N, 77.1W. We’ll see about that.

Amen. I am always amazed and saddened by the displays of absolute disregard for the workers who are trying their best to make our lives resume their comfortableness (if that is a word.)
I testified at a state legislature hearing one time about the funding for our local public utility, and used the example that we want the repairmen to be there when the need happens. We want them to be available to go to other locations to help other people, eg Louisiana or Quebec when the need arises. If the company has to work with less money, because of state regulation, they may cut back on this type of employee. Not a good idea!
This one’s different, it seems.
All the predictions match.
Prayers for all in Irene’s path...
the restaurant provided ICE (by then it was like gold)

Fill plastic containers with water and freeze them now, to make really big ice cubes. They will also keep the fridge contents cold for a longer period of time. Fill the fridge with water containers, too.
Maybe the forward speed is too great (14 miles per hour) to allow the core to build (core being disturbed by its' own forward speed).
I would say if this was in the gulf, it would be hooking it up right now.
Good graphic, thanks for posting. I’m on the east side of MA, looks like Irene is going thru the middle of the state which means being on the east side of MA and the east side of the storm we will be getting the wind, not fond of hurricane winds.
BOY I wonder if Michelle went Aunt Esther on Obama LOL!

“By the time the hurricane reaches NY, they’re predicting 60 mph winds.”
At ground level...
What does that translate to on the 30th floor?
Isn’t it sucking in dry air?
Mayor Bloomberg just stated all Zone A locations have a mandatory evac. Don’t know where your mom is but it should be all over the area. Good Luck!
Not praying for the bad freepers?? LOL
I’m not buying it. To get back on the Stormpulse track (a Cape Lookout landfall), Irene would have to slice like one of John Daly’s drives and nothing seems to indicate that it will.

The rest of us who are in line for a direct or semi-direct hit are grateful for the constant updates.
Aunt Esther? If it were only the case (boy I wish!)... no, this is somebody whispering into his ear that he had better be in the White House during a disaster and not off on vacation or the golf course.
But the great and omniscient Obamugabe said that his election would stop the oceans from rising!
Will he make a statement repudiating the storm surge?
I believe they share sports 'reporters' with ESPN...
