So I’ll insinuate myself into this conversation if you’ll indulge.
For I too think this is an over-the-top hype but...a)I got some thoughts on that and b)the hype doesn’t offend; it makes me smile more than anything.
First, you gotta love Bloomberg. Here’s a guy trying desperately to avoid being...two words...RAY NAGIN! Further, NEW YORK! Come on...NEW YORK! Remember New Orleans, the disaster that was? So here we got, of all towns, New York, facing what will likely be a really bad thunderstorm, come on. Bloomberg’s a quasi-Republican of sorts, though us wise ones on FreeRepublic know better. But oncit he was a Repub and if a hurricane plows into NY and we got big fat lazy people sitting on roofs, the Media’s gonna howl about how often Republicans handle this stuff for their criticism of New Orleans.
Further, I think our Delaware leaders have been a bit boobaloob about this and we are directly on the path here by the ocean in Delmarva. We got a Democrat Governor evacuating all people who live within 3/4 a mile from any kind of water.
I think that’s just the dumbest thing. Why 3/4 a mile? Why not a full mile? Why not a 1/2 mile for that matter? Then he says that DEMA “suggests” that all residents living in manufactured homes leave.
Others on this thread have told me that other Governors are also “suggesting” that residents in mobile homes should leave but I have not heard NJ Christie say any such thing. GET OFF THE DAMN BEACH he says.
I think for the government to be “suggesting” anything is kind of dumb. Either make it mandatory or shut mouth. Refer to FEMA web sites for anything not mandatory, I suggest.
But hey, it’s not the stuff of much angst for me. But if you don’t think the Media and all the Governors aren’t playing to the sad history of Hurricane Katrina than you’re naive.
Yes, it’s a hurricane and hurricane’s are dangerous.
I think the concept of becoming another Louisiana has got the Governors more spooked, and the media more excited, than Hurricane Irene any day of the week.
Mayor Nutter of Philly came on tv and said this will be the worst storm to hit the city in 50 years. Flooding already. Told people in the city to be patient, it may take up to two weeks to restore electricity. Pretty scary thought with flash mobs wandering the streets.
Had a few power flickers earlier, but power is steady for now. Looks like the worst is coming up on us here in the next couple of hours...
Andrew was just terrible! My mom lived in Fla at the time.
And, if I remember correctly, Andrew didn’t attain full strength until just before land-strike? These storms are so unpredictable, and there is still a limit to perfect knowledge.
That said, the terrain, composition of the earth, and the population density in the coastal areas Irene is heading for make it dangerous for all living there.
Did you see the post upthread of the warmer water temps Irene will be traveling along? What do you think, are they cool enough to encourage weakening in a storm of this size?
How hard is it to get some ham operators to report false data? If we can fake a moon landing, certainly we could fake some pressure readings.

Yeah, I heard that too. If we're hit hard around here, I completely believe it. There are so many trees that cleanup could be very time consuming here in the 'burbs. We bought our large back-up generator in advance of Y2K, more because of our experience with PECO than because of Y2K. We're not in a subdivision, so we're typically at the end of the restoration queue. The crews (understandably) focus first on restoring power to critical infrastructure, hospitals, etc, and then on neighborhoods which have a lot of homes in the dark due to a single problem. Restoring one-sies and two-sies comes last.
That surge map is pretty cool. You can plug in the height of surge and get the probabilities along with the map of areas. The link was keyed to 2 foot surges.

That's a reasonable insight. Bad examples can make good lessons. Don't ignore the fact that a good part of the marketable national population lives within the states impacted by this storm. What percentage? I rough guess around 30%. That size market makes for a super lead item.

Southwestern NH checking in while we still can.
Rain coming in heavy at times, with winds gusting to 10 MPH.
This is from the northernmost band, if you look at the radar.
Starting tomorrow, are expecting power outages of more than a day and roads obstructed and closed because of downed trees and flooding. Some roads and bridges will wash out completely. Some of the small towns are preparing for major flooding, especially if we have any dam breaks, like we did back in 2005.
Here at the Westbrook Ranch, have a propane generator, so that should keep us, until we run out of propane. We graded our half-mile-long dirt driveway for better drainage, and cleaned leaves and stones out of the ditches.
We’ve got a good supply of drinking water, in case we run out of propane, and we have a couple 30 gal. containers storing rain water coming out of the gutters for washing and flushing. I need to make that a more permanent arrangement with a cement or cement-block cistern and a hand pump up on the deck.
We’ve got a good store of flashlights and batteries, and we even have some Aladdin lamps with plenty of good lamp oil from Lehman’s non-electric Catalog.
I went out with one of my sons earlier to stock up on diesel for the tractor and to fill a few cans of gasoline for spare. All the cars have had their tanks filled. We’ve got about a 30-day supply of food on the pantry, and plenty of ammunition if we need to get some fresh meat. Plenty enough game out here, for now, anyway.
Will let you from time to time how things progress.
Surely he's joking. Not even that imbecile could expect people to be "patient" for two weeks without power.
